Scientist Margaret Morris studied mice’s memory (记忆力) . She found some mice had better memories because they ate low-fat and healthy food. Some mice often ate junk food such as cakes, meat pies, and chips and they were more forgetful.
This can happen to people, too. “If you like eating junk food and don’t cat enough fruit and vegetables,” Morris said. “the changes in your stomach may make your brain (大脑) not work well.” Scientists found the brain talks with the stomach. Recently, they have found that the stomach talks back. It may even tell the brain what to do.
In the stomach there are tiny (微小的) living things— bacteria. They are also called the microbiome and can help us digest (消化) food and send messages to our brain. Most salty and sugary foods can make these good bacteria in our stomach go away. This can make us feel not so good and maybe even sad.
Another scientist, Rob Knight, suggests eating yogurt because it has healthy bacteria. Does that mean no hamburgers? “Having them sometimes is okay,” Knight says, “but there are no really healthy benefits if you often have them. Being good to your microbiome over the next six months is a lot more important than what you ate yesterday, or what you eat tomorrow. ”

Do you know how to grow potatoes?
First, take a potato. Next, make the potato dry (干燥的) under the sun for two hours. Then, plant (种植) it in the ground. After two or three weeks, a potato plant will grow out of the ground. The potato plant will make flowers. After the flowers die (死亡), dig up (翻土) your potato plant carefully. Then, you will have your own potatoes!
But there are four important things that you should remember! First, plant the potato about 20 cm deep (深). Second, don’t make them too close. There should be at least 30 cm of each potato plant. Third, use the right soil (土壤). If it is too dry, the potato will not be able to grow well. Put animal waste (排泄物) to the soil to help the potatoes grow better. The best temperature is between 15℃ and 20℃.
You don’t need to plant lots of potatoes. One plant can make more than two or three potatoes! It’s not difficult, even a child can do it.

One day, you open the fridge and find some mold (发霉的) food. But before you throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn’t want to waste food. She cuts off the mold part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. It is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Mold food tastes quite bad, and it’s not safe to eat.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs, usually contains (包含) water. This helps mold easily grow. Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.
But it’s easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can’t grow very deep inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and under the mold to remove it. It’s OK to cut the mold parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is covered with mold all over, you should still throw it away.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy (富裕的) and smart.
This is an old English saying. It means that we should go to bed early at night and get up early in the morning. If we do, we shall be healthy. We shall also be rich and clever.
Is this true? Perhaps it is. The body must have enough sleep. Children of your age need ten hours’ sleep every night. If you do not go to bed early, you can’t have enough sleep. Then you can’t think properly (正确地) and you can’t do your work properly. You will not be wise and you may not become wealthy!
Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is not good for them. We should sleep at night when it is dark. The dark helps us to sleep well. When the daylight comes, we should get up. This is the time for exercise. If the body is not used, it will become weak. Exercise keeps it strong.
Exercise helps the blood (血液) to move around inside the body. This is very important. Blood takes nutrition to all parts of our bodies. The brains (大脑) in our heads also need blood. We think with our brains. If we keep our bodies healthy, and take exercise, we can think better!

“When side by side two rabbits go, who can tell the buck (雄兔) from the doe (雌兔)?” China’s Yang Jingru and Li Jinzi “played the buck and the doe” in the women’s 1500m short track speed skating (短道速滑) event of the Winter Youth Olympic Games on Jan.20th,2024.
They used the classic“rabbit strategy (策略)”. The key of the “rabbit strategy” is teamwork of two skaters. One skater runs very fast from the start, while the other stays behind. This is different from the usual 1500 m speed skating strategy of keeping the same speed and then speeding up in the last few turns.
Using the “rabbit strategy”, after the first turn, Yang suddenly skated at full speed. She ran one turn faster than the other skaters and stayed at the back of the group, but nobody noticed it.
Working with Yang, Li changed between the front and the back in the first half of the race. This made the other skaters wonder who was the “leading rabbit”. In fact, when the bell rang and showed that there was only one turn to go, everyone had two turns left except Yang. At last, Yang and Li crossed the finish line successfully while others were getting into a mess (乱).
The two Chinese short track speed players cleverly use the “rabbit strategy”. They won both gold and silver medals, making it a classic example at the Winter Youth Olympic Games.

When you do your homework, you may often meet some problems. What will you do? Tom, a middle school student, will take out his smart phone, goes online and look for answers.
Many students do homework in the same way as Tom. “It is fast and easy,” Tom says. “You also learn by seeing how others work them out. It’s very helpful for our study,” says John, another student.
John’s Chinese teacher often asks students to give reports on great writers in class. When it comes to John’s turn, he usually goes online for help. “I never take any computer lessons, but I’ve become very good at finding information online and using the computer,” John said.
However, many people think doing like this also brings problems. Some students just copy (抄袭) the answers online without thinking. In the end, they become lazy.
Head teacher Mr. Wang in Tom and John’s school thinks that knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control (控制). “When you meet a difficult problem, think about it by yourself first. Remember not to use the Interment too much,” the teacher said. “Be sure to understand the reasons behind the answers, or you won’t learn anything at all. If you can’t do well in self-control, ask your parents for help.”

Many people might think that if they had more money, then they would be happier in life. For example, people might look at what others have, like expensive clothes or nice cars, and wish they could have the same. But the things that money can buy cannot bring happiness to a person for a long time.
But is that really true? Studies have found that money can, in fact, make people happier. But it’s not having money that brings happiness. Instead, it’s giving money to others that makes people happy. It could be buying a gift for a friend or a family member. It could be buying a homeless person food to eat. It could be giving money to a person in need. Just think about the last time you used your own money to do something for someone else. How did you feel? Whether it is a small large amount of money, people feel happier when they give. This is because making someone else happy makes the giver happy, too.
This idea of connecting (关联) your happiness to the happiness of others is called “ubuntu (班图精神)” in an African language. There is even a story about a man visiting Africa. He asked some children to race to a nearby tree. The first child to touch the tree would get a sweet treat. Surprisingly, all the children held hands and ran together. They all touched the tree at the same time. The man asked why they did this. The children simply said they could only enjoy eating the treat if everyone had one.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy (富裕的) and smart.
