When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.
Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revive the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; and sheltering soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I made a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white fungal mycelium
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard - it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24.What was the soil problem in the author’s garden?
A.Wet and salty. B.Poor and stony.
C.Dry and sandy. D.Acidic and weedy.
25.What was the focus of the author’s gardening methods?
A.Limiting plant variety. B.Adopting a high-tech approach.
C.Giving more intervention. D.Creating a sustainable environment.
26.Why does the author mention the replanting in May?
A.To introduce different species. B.To prove the garden shelters insects.
C.To show the soil has come to life. D.To explain the transplanting process.
27.What is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A.Soil has a soul. B.Life is well defined.
C.Life has complexity. D.Soil is the source of life.

A new study published in Science Advances reveals that long-term exposure to extreme heat, such as the record-breaking 188 days above 90℉ (with 140 days over 100℉) in Phoenix last year, can speed up biological aging at the molecular (分子的) level. Led by University of Southern California expert Eunyoung Choi, the research found that long-term heat exposure changes gene behavior through DNA methylation (甲基化), a process with impacts “similar to smoking and drinking.”
The study compared adults over 56 in hot regions like Phoenix-where heat readings were over dangerous levels for over half the year-and cooler cities like Seattle. Participants in extreme heat showed biological signs of aging 14 months faster, even after controlling for factors like income, education, and lifestyle.“ Biological aging and actual age don’t always match,” explains Choi, noting that DNA methylation acts as a “molecular clock,” controlling gene activity like a light switch. The study also analyzed blood samples from 3,600 adults, using climate models to track heat exposure over six years-confirming heat’s independent role in speeding up aging.
This early aging is connected to getting age-related diseases sooner. “It puts stress on individuals, families, and healthcare systems,” says Boston University expert Deborah Carr, “If that’s something that takes you out of the workforce for a year, that makes you go to the doctors every day for a year, that increases your medical budget.”
As the U.S. National Climate Assessment warns of 20-30 more extreme heat days by mid-century, aging populations face heightened risks: older adults have reduced sweating capacity, poor blood circulation (循环), and drug sensitivities that hinder body heat control. “Heat adds extra physical stress,” says Harvard’s Robert Meade. Future research will focus on personalized home heat exposure to find ways to reduce heat’s damage to genes. This work emphasizes heat’s hidden harm to human health and calls for targeted interventions as climate changes.
28.What can be learned about the study from paragraph 2?
A.It was focused on gene activity. B.It adopted a comparative approach.
C.It overlooked some important factors. D.It was conducted in Phoenix and Seattle.
29.What is the focus of Deborah Carr’s words?
A.The function of the study. B.The impact of premature aging.
C.The way to reduce medical cost. D.The pressure to improve productivity.
30.What does the underlined word “hinder” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Get in the way of.B.Facilitate. C.Lay the foundation of. D.disable.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To promote a new anti-aging treatment.
B.To warn of heat risks and call for further study.
C.To reveal the connection between heat and aging.
D.To inform about heat’s aging effect and urge action.

In our daily lives, we may encounter situations where someone needs immediate assistance. However, what happens when the victim is responsible for getting into the dangerous situation? Does this change the duty of the rescuer?
The duty of rescue can be broadly divided into two categories: natural and artificial. A natural duty arises when a rescuer encounters a victim by chance and has the ability to provide assistance without significant cost to themselves. On the other hand, an artificial duty is created by agreement among participants, such as in a mutual aid framework or an insurance policy that covers the costs of a professional rescue service.
When considering the duty of rescue, it is crucial to acknowledge the responsibility of the victim. If the victim is responsible for getting into difficulties, this may affect the rescuer’s obligations in several ways. Firstly, it may reduce the cost that the rescuer is obliged to bear. Secondly, the victim’s responsibility may reduce the force of the duty of rescue. In other words, the rescuer may have stronger reasons to prioritize other duties over the duty of rescue, especially when facing limited resources or choices between different victims.
However, it is important to note that the duty of rescue should never be completely negated (否认). Even in cases of carelessness or wrongdoing, the rescuer’s primary aim should be to protect the victim’s life and bodily integrity. In practical terms, acknowledging the victim’s responsibility can just help balance the expected costs of the rescue between the victim and the rescuers more fairly. For example, in the case of a lost hiker who knowingly exposed themselves to risk, volunteers may choose to delay the rescue until morning or charge the victim for the costs involved.
Moreover, recognizing the victim’s responsibility can encourage personal accountability and prevent future risks. By making individuals aware of the potential consequences of their actions, we can encourage responsible behavior and reduce the need for rescue in the long run.
32.Which of the following situations may create an artificial duty of rescue?
A.A passerby sees a car accident and decides to help.
B.A friend offers to help another friend move to a new house.
C.A volunteer in a mutual aid agreement assists other members.
D.A firefighter responds to a call for assistance in a burning building.
33.What is the primary aim of the rescuer when facing a victim?
A.To protect the victim’s safety and health.
B.To acknowledge the victim’s responsibility.
C.To charge the victim for the costs of the rescue.
D.To prioritize other duties over the duty of rescue.
34.What is illustrated by the example of the lost hiker?
A.The need for professional rescue services.
B.The extra cost of rescue caused by victims.
C.The difficulty of balancing duties in emergencies.
D.Recognition of victim’s fault for fair rescue cost split.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The artificial and natural duties of rescuers.
B.Ways to reduce the need for rescue services.
C.The effects of technology on rescue operations.
D.The rescuer’s duty and the victim’s responsibility.
I have a drawer full of letters to Santa. Each year my children would write up their Christmas wish lists. They were polite requests for the latest game or toy. As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. 36
Those letters taught my children a valuable lesson about writing: It has a purpose. Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something;other times it may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. 37 And when writing doesn’t seem to have any purpose or get any kind of meaningful response, then it can be hard to get excited about doing it.
Christmas is a great time of year for children to communicate with others through writing. When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. 38 You write “Dear Santa” because you don’t know him personally and you want to show him respect.
39 Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. However, because they are usually writing to family and friends, they use informal language most of the time.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. 40 This type of writing won’t be rewarded by the school examiner, nor by a future employer or a potential client. The very best communicators are those who know how to adjust their language to match their audience.
A.It isn’t that these young people can’t write.
B.But it is always purposeful-or at least it should be.
C.The age of pen-and-paper letter writing may have passed.
D.As a result, each year they received something they wanted.
E.You write “Hi Nanna and Pop” because you are close to them.
F.As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have.
G.But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems.

The Department for Education has just held a consultation (磋商) on what should 56 (include) on the school curriculum (课程) for personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education. First aid is a vital life skill and schools are under increasing pressure 57 (provide) it as a part of the school curriculum. First aid training provides children 58 knowledge of dealing with any medical emergencies. In addition to any first aid training they may have at school, many teenagers are now also choosing to take online and practical courses.
CPR, an emergency life-saving procedure 59 (perform) when the heart stops 60 (beat), is just one of the many areas covered in the first aid courses. In the UK over 30,000 cardiac arrests a year occur outside of hospitals, but less than one in ten cardiac arrest 61 (patient) survive to be discharged from hospital. 62 is therefore vital that we equip more people with the skills, ability and confidence to help. In Norway and the USA 63 these skills are routinely taught in schools, the survival rate for cardiac arrests in the community is far 64 (high) than in the UK.
For older children and teenagers, a first aid course can really boost their confidence, so they feel 65 (full) prepared should they or their friends need first-line medical help.

The Thompson house was always noisy before school. Every morning, twelve-year-old Mia did her hair at the kitchen table, her fingers moving quickly as she tried to ignore the regular “clang-clang-clang” beside her. Her little brother Leo, his cheeks still soft with sleep, was hitting his spoon on his bowl like a bell.
“Stop it” Mia said, throwing potato chips at him. As she did, the necklace (项链) around her neck moved a little. The necklace, made of shells (贝壳), was her most loved thing — a gift from Grandma before she passed away. Mia valued this necklace dearly. She remembered how Grandma had handpicked each shell during their last trip to the beach. “This round shell means patience,” Grandma had whispered stories while placing it around Mia’s neck. Right now, Mia needed all the patience she could get.
As the days went by, Mia found herself struggling less to keep her patience. Leo’s noisy habits, though still bothersome, didn’t seem as annoying as before. There were moments when she’d catch him making funny faces or dancing around to music only she could hear. She would roll her eyes, but deep down, a part of her smiled. One afternoon, while sitting together on the sofa, Leo shyly asked about the necklace. “Why do you love it so much?” he whispered. Mia then told him the story of Grandma and the special meaning of each shell. For a moment, Leo looked thoughtful, and Mia hoped he understood how much the necklace meant to her. She wished he would be more careful — but little did she know, that wish was about to be tested.
After a two-day summer camp, Mia came home and found Leo lying on her bedroom floor, her box turned over. “What are you doing?” she shouted. Leo jumped. “I — I just wanted to see…” The necklace fell from his hand, and the string broke. The shells dropped to the floor like small white teeth, some of them broken into several parts.

And my column in the dallas morning news appears thursdays. As I know, you've also written many books on organic gardening, such as deer dirt, doctor verbs for taxes and plants for taxes. Listen to the next question. Good evening, everyone. In a few days, IT will finally be time to lie on the beach and enjoy the hot summer. However, when IT comes to outdoor activities, whether you're relaxing at the lake or hanging out in the backyard, you need to pay attention to the weather to make sure that you are prepared for the upcoming july. Here's the first week's forecast for the entire country. If you live in the north eastern part, you've probably been using the air conditioning to fight heat ways in the past week. Fortunately, the discomfort of extreme heat will ease. There will be some spotty thunderstorms on their way, and temperatures will likely drop below twenty one degrees. The midwest is often called fly over country, but IT might be the best place to celebrate the holiday. Acu weather reports that the majority of the region will experience cool temperatures with Sunny skies. Sadly, for residents in the south, I suggest you, we schedule your outdoor plans. The weather channel reports that parts of the south, specifically along the gulf of mexico, thunderstorms this week. Good evening, everyone.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.C 27.A
根据第一段中“I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. (然而,我很快发现土壤贫瘠,粘土多,到处都是石头。)”可知,作者花园里的土壤问题是贫瘠且多石的。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. (现代农业的两个核心原则可以指导这一转变:尽量减少对土壤的干扰并强调生物多样性。)”以及后续描写作者尝试应用这些方法,包括让植物自然生长和分解,引入不同的植物和恢复其生态群落等,可推断出作者园艺方法的重点是创造一个可持续的环境。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据第五段“In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white fungal mycelium (真菌菌丝). (五月份,我决定移栽一株开花的植物。当我把这株植物挖出来时,各种各样的生命出现了。蚯蚓从根部悬垂下来,一只长腿蜘蛛急忙寻找遮蔽处。在植物下方,我还注意到了细小的白色真菌菌丝。)”以及最后一段中“Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard - it completely changed the way I think about soil. (我用手指划过土壤,比以往任何时候都更清楚地意识到,我改变的不仅仅是我的院子——它完全改变了我对土壤的看法。)”可推知,作者提到五月的重新种植是为了展示土壤已经恢复了活力。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die. (它不仅仅是一种承载生命的介质,而是一个独立的生命体。尽管科学界对生命的定义尚未达成一致,但教科书强调了一些广泛用于区分生物与非生物的标准。土壤符合其中的许多标准:它具有高度有序的结构,具备积极自我保护的能力,能够生长,能够呼吸,并且也可能会死亡。)”可知,最后一段传达的是“土壤有灵魂”的意思。故选A。
C
【答案】28.B 29.B 30.A 31.D
根据第二段中的“The study compared adults over 56 in hot regions like Phoenix-where heat readings were over dangerous levels for over half the year-and cooler cities like Seattle.(该研究比较了凤凰城(一年中有超过一半时间的温度超过危险水平)等炎热地区和西雅图等凉爽城市中56岁以上的成年人。)”
根据第三段中的“This early aging is connected to getting age-related diseases sooner. “It puts stress on individuals, families, and healthcare systems,” says Boston University expert Deborah Carr, “If that’s something that takes you out of the workforce for a year, that makes you go to the doctors every day for a year, that increases your medical budget.”(这种过早衰老与更早患上与年龄相关的疾病有关。波士顿大学专家黛博拉·卡尔说:“这会给个人、家庭和医疗保健系统带来压力。如果这导致你一年无法工作,一年中每天都要去看医生,那会增加你的医疗预算。”)”可知,黛博拉·卡尔的话重点在于过早衰老带来的影响。故选B项。
30.词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“older adults have reduced sweating capacity, poor blood circulation (循环), and drug sensitivities that hinder body heat control.(老年人出汗能力下降、血液循环不良,且对药物敏感,这些都会hinder身体的热量控制。)” 故选A项。
D
【答案】32.C 33.A 34.D 35.D

根据第二段中“The duty of rescue can be broadly divided into two categories: natural and artificial. A natural duty arises when a rescuer encounters a victim by chance and has the ability to provide assistance without significant cost to themselves. On the other hand, an artificial duty is created by agreement among participants, such as in a mutual aid framework or an insurance policy that covers the costs of a professional rescue service.(救助义务大致可分为自然救助义务和人为救助义务两大类。当救援人员偶然遇到遇险者,并且有能力在不给自己造成重大损失的情况下提供援助时,就会产生一种自然责任。另一方面,人为的救援责任是由参与者之间的协议产生的,比如在互助框架或涵盖专业救援服务费用的保险政策中)”可知,在互助协议中,志愿者帮助其他成员是基于互助协议这一参与者之间的约定,属于人为的救援责任。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Even in cases of carelessness or wrongdoing, the rescuer’s primary aim should be to protect the victim’s life and bodily integrity.(即使在遇险者粗心或犯错的情况下,救援者的主要目标也应该是保护受害者的生命和身体完整)”可知,救援者面对遇险者时的主要目标是保护遇险者的安全和健康。故选A项。
根据第四段中“In practical terms, acknowledging the victim’s responsibility can just help balance the expected costs of the rescue between the victim and the rescuers more fairly. For example, in the case of a lost hiker who knowingly exposed themselves to risk, volunteers may choose to delay the rescue until morning or charge the victim for the costs involved.(在实际操作中,承认遇险者自身责任有助于更公平地分摊救援方与遇险者之间的预期成本。例如,当一名明知风险仍执意涉险的登山者失踪时,救援队可以选择延迟至次日清晨开展营救,或要求遇险者承担相关救援费用)”可知,这个例子说明了认识到遇险者的过错有助于公平地分摊救援成本。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“However, what happens when the victim is responsible for getting into the dangerous situation? Does this change the duty of the rescuer?(然而,遇险者对自己陷入危险情况负有责任时,会发生什么呢?这会改变救援者的职责吗?)”以及后文对救援者职责分类、遇险者责任对救援影响等内容的阐述可知,文章主要介绍了救援者的职责和遇险者的责任。故选D项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
36.根据空前“As the children got older, they would give Santa some hints(提示)on where to buy their presents. (随着孩子们逐渐长大,他们会给圣诞老人一些提示,告诉他去哪里买礼物。)”可知,孩子们给圣诞老人提示去哪买礼物。结合选项可知,D项“As a result, each year they received something they wanted. (结果,他们每年都会收到他们想要的东西。)”为孩子们提示的结果:收到心仪的礼物。前后为明显的因果关系。故选D项。
37.根据空前“Sometimes our purpose is to achieve something;other times t may be to entertain, inform, or persuade. (有时我们的目的是为了获得东西,有时可能是为了娱乐、告知或说服。)”可知,我们写作都是带着目的的。结合选项B“But it is always purposeful-or at least it should be. (但它总是有目的的——或者至少应该是这样。)”可知,前后语意一致,说明写作是带有目的的。故选B项。
38.根据空前“When children write for real audiences and real purposes, they can learn to choose their words accordingly. (当孩子们为真正的读者和真正的目的写作时,他们就能学会相应地选择用词。)”以及空后“You write “Dear Santa” because you don’t know him personally and you want to show him respect. (你写“亲爱的圣诞老人”是因为你不认识他,你想表达对他的尊重。)”可知,空后句和空前句之间是“理论——实践”的关系,由此可推知,空处也应为具体的实践。结合选项E“You write “Hi Nanna and Pop” because you are close to them. (你写“嗨,奶奶和爸爸”,因为你和他们很亲近。)”可知,符合这一逻辑。而且和空后结构一致。故选E项。
39.根据空后“Texting, online messaging, live chats while playing video games all mean that they are constantly producing written messages. (在玩电子游戏时发短信、在线消息、实时聊天都意味着他们在不断地产生书面信息。 )”可知,科技的发展让人们的写作变得更普遍。结合选项F“As technology develops, young people are writing more than they ever have. (随着科技的发展,年轻人写的东西比以前更多了。)”可知,前后语意一致,符合语境。故选F项。
40.根据空前“There is nothing wrong with this kind of writing. It suits the audience and the purpose and gets the job done. (这种写作方式并没有错。它迎合了观众和目的,完成了任务。)”可知,作者在评价这种科技影响下的写作方式。结合选项G“But if this is the only kind of writing young people do, it will cause problems. (但如果这是年轻人唯一的写作方式,那就会造成问题。)”可知,前后语意一致,从正反两方面评价科技带来的写作。故选G项。

第二节(共10小题;每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或所给单词的正确形式。
56.be included 57.to provide 58.with 59.performed 60.beating 61.patients 62.It 63.where 64.higher 65.fully
be under pressure to do sth.
provide sb. with sth.
设空处在句中作后置定语修饰an emergency life‑saving procedure,且perform与an emergency life‑saving procedure之间是逻辑上的动宾关系,应用过去分词作后置定语,故填performed。
故填It。

Last Sunday, I participated in a lecture about first-aid knowledge organized by our community. The lecture was extremely practical and informative. The instructor vividly explained basic first-aid skills, such as how to perform CPR on those with heart attack and how to handle common injuries like cuts and burns. We also had hands-on practice with first-aid kits under professional guidance.
This experience was eye-opening. I realized that first-aid knowledge is not only crucial for saving lives in emergencies but also gives us the confidence to take immediate action. I believe everyone should have such knowledge, and I’m determined to spread it among my classmates. It was truly a rewarding event.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Mia’s heart sank.

The next morning, Mia was surprised to find a box on her desk.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mia’s heart sank. She stared at the broken shells on the floor, her breath caught in her throat. “You knew this was special” She picked up the pieces, her voice shaking. “Get out” Leo stepped back quickly. “I didn’t mean to…” he whispered, his voice shaking. “You never mean to” she screamed. Leo’s face turned pale, and he quickly bent down to pick up the pieces. Mia turned away, unable to speak. That night, she lay in bed staring at the ceiling, remembering Grandma’s warm hands and gentle voice: “Patience” She clutched her pillow, trying to forget the broken necklace.
The next morning, Mia was surprised to find a box on her desk. On top was a note, written in shaky letters: “I’m sorry, Mia. I tried to fix it.” Inside, she saw the broken shells carefully glued back together, some tied with string, some placed in the shape of a heart. At the center was a new shell — small, but shining — clearly one Leo had found himself. Mia smiled through tears. It wasn’t perfect, but it was filled with love. She picked up the necklace and gently placed it around her neck, whispering, “Thank you, Leo.”
