Passage 3 (24-25学年高一上·山西太原·期中) I began learning languages at the age of five, when my parents sent me to an after-school French class at my primary school. My parents, who speak English, stressed using different languages at home — even Grandpa could speak a foreign language! I don’t remember much from those early classes, aside from learning different colours and days of the week over and over, but I do know that it was during these moments that I first discovered the joy of journeying away from my surroundings with words. Because in French class it was easy to imagine we were somewhere else, away-far away-from the present, which was a really attractive idea to a young child with a wild imagination. I stuck with French as I grew up; it was one of those strong relationships that provides comfort. It wasn’t until I began learning Spanish (西班牙语) at age 11 that I experienced a more transformative (变化的) relationship with languages. Looking back, it strikes me that Spanish, for me, was always about feelings. At the beginning the focus was on learning words and grammar to describe how I was feeling, but I somehow ended up with a language that helped me express myself better than my native language. After years of studying Spanish at school, and living in Spain, my Spanish came to match, and perhaps even exceed (超过), my English. Despite having returned to the UK ten years ago, now I still often find myself stuck in English conversations, unable to express a thought or feeling with quite the same depth as I would be able to in Spanish. Spanish affords me another kind of liveliness. I’m not just “in love”. To me, “te echo de menos” houses more feeling than “I miss you,” which takes me back to a time in my life that I miss a lot. 7.What is the author’s native language? A.French. B.English. C.Spanish. D.Chinese. 8.Why did the author feel enjoyable in French class? A.He could picture an amazing world. B.He had no homework to do. C.He could turn to his parents for help. D.He found it similar to English. 9.How is Spanish different from other languages for the author? A.It uses a host of simpler words. B.It leads to more misunderstanding. C.It has more difficult grammar rules. D.It allows him to better express feelings. 10.What does the author want to say in the last paragraph? A.He succeeded at the cost of hard work. B.Learning a language takes too much time. C.Spanish brings the happy past into his mind. D.He often misses the vacation spent in the UK. Passage 4 (24-25学年高一上·甘肃会宁·期中) Have you ever dreamed of having a fashionable watch of great value? A small watchmaker in Switzerland in 1922 designed the first automatic (自动的) watch to show the day, month, and date. Only seven of these splendid watches were ever made and these watches were almost lost to history. Today, it is so hard to get an original (首批的) watch that some watch historians are even willing to offer $200,000 for one. These watches attracted a lot of people for their splendid color, fashionable style, and new uses in the 1920s. The owners of the watches were admired and set apart from the crowd. Because the number of the original watches is very limited, owning such a watch will make you feel very special. Today, you are offered the same kind of watch with improvement. It has a 24-jewel mechanical (机械的) movement, the kind desired by watch collectors. The watchmaker has made the movement of the watch much more modern with an automatic rotor (上弦装置) so that the watch never needs to be wound by hand. The watch comes in a very beautiful case with a crocodile design on it. To get a watch in such a perfect design means to get a chance to know a piece of watch-making history and to wear such a watch will show your personal taste and social position. You can get the watch either in person or by mail all an affordable price. You will also receive good service from the watch seller. If you are not satisfied with the watch after you get it, you may simply return it within 30 days. Don’t miss the chance to realize your dream. 11.The original automatic watches are valuable because ________. A.the watches were made many years ago B.the watches were made by a Swiss watchmaker C.only rich people can afford the watches D.only a few watches of the kind were made 12.Watch collectors want to get the improved watch, especially for its _________. A.mechanical movement B.splendid color C.fashionable style D.new uses 13.The purpose of the passage is to encourage the readers to ________. A.buy the watch B.return the watch C.wear the watch D.receive the service 14.The passage is probably taken from a __________. A.report B.magazine C.text book D.science book 主题02 人与社会——社会与人际 Passage 1 (24-25学年高一上·宁夏吴忠·期中) Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity (成熟) and sense of responsibility. Passage 2 (24-25学年高一上·四川峨眉山·期中) During the last twenty years there has been increasing worry about the quality of the environment. Along with air and water pollutants, noise pollution has been recognised as a serious pollutant. As noise levels have risen, the effects of noise have become more obvious. Noise is described as “unwanted sound”. Causes of noise pollution include traffic, rock bands, barking dogs, television, and noise from neighbours, voices, alarms, and boats. Studies show that over forty per cent of Americans are troubled at home or lose sleep because of noise pollution. Noise has bad effects on people and the environment. Noise causes hearing loss, interferes(干扰)with human activities at home and work, and is in various ways dangerous to people’s health. When we think, talk, listen to music, or sleep, we need quiet. Even low levels of noise can be annoying. Sudden increases in volume(音量)can make sounds annoying. The quieter the background is, the more penetrating a noise can be. Noise can also make instructions or warning unclear, resulting in accidents. Louder noise can cause more problems. Continued stress caused by living in noisy conditions can lead to high blood pressure, which is the main cause of some illnesses. Listening to loud sounds at levels above eighty-five decibels(分贝)can lead to hearing loss. Noise can cause the heart rate to quicken, breathing to increase, and the digestive system(消化系统)to slow down. Local government has the responsibility to fight noise pollution. For example, it can control the speed of trains through their community. On the other hand, responsible individuals will never make noise pollution wherever they are. 28.What does the underlined word “penetrating” in paragraph 4 mean? A.High and exciting. But why, I don’t know,” Yuan Meng survived (存活) after his birth in 2017, but his fragile twin brother, born 14 minutes earlier, unfortunately died just a few hours after birth, Beauval Park Zoo announced Yuan Meng’s leaving the zoo in May. A zoo public relations official said that they are planning a goodbye event for Yuan Meng’s fans, but the date has yet to be decided. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children. If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have the product that we now think greatly important: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their working time just thinking about and developing new ideas. Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence (智力). The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something. Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can gain information but can’t recognize ways to use it in new situations. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems. It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it’s choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble. 1.What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake? A.People should be discouraged to think freely. B.It should encourage people to work a longer time. C.People will do better if they pay all attention to their work. D.People should spend some of their working time thinking creatively. 2.What can we know from the passage about creativity? A.It is something that most people are born with. B.It is something that has nothing to do with intelligence at all. C.It is a way of using what one has learned to work out new problems. D.It is something that is not important to the life in the future at all. 3.Why don’t schools try to encourage creativity? A.They think it impossible to develop creativity in class. B.They attach great importance to the test result. C.They pay no attention to examination marks. D.They don’t want their students to make mistakes. 4.What should the parents do when their children decide how to spend their money? A.Allow them to have a try. B.Try to help them as much as possible. C.Take no notice of whatever they do. D.Order them to spend the least money. Passage 2 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand? The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you “sink in” at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. The researchers compared how people walked on foam (泡沫) and hard surfaces by counting the forces under their feet and how much each person needed. They found that walking on softsurfaces, such as sand, mud and snow caused people to take longer steps — actions that use more energy than walking on a hard surface. But as experienced beach walkers know, there’s a way to make it easier to walk on sand: Just add water. When sand is wet, it becomes more compact (紧密), and walking on it is more similar to walking on hard surface. In other words, it’s much easier to cross a beach by walking along the shoreline, where the waves roll in and out. This is a balance though; too much water could make the sand soft once again. If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be achieved by wearing shoes. Although it’s more difficult, there are some good reasons to exercise on sand. The impact forces are lower on sand than on hard surface. Research suggests that walking across sand is much easier on your joints (关节) and muscles, especially compared with a hard and unfriendly surface such as concrete. That’s why sand is a better surface for helping athletes recover more quickly from exercise. 5.Why is the question raised in the first paragraph? A.To show problems. B.To call up readers’ memories. C.To invite readers to answer it. D.To draw readers’ attention to the topic. 6.How can you walk on sand more easily? A.By putting on shoes. B.By taking longer steps. C.By walking in the water. D.By using special breath methods. 7.The passage is probably taken from_________. A.A science magazine. B.A guide book. C.A journal entry. D.A poster for clubs. 8.What may be the best title for the text? A.Tips for Beach Vacation B.All kinds of Sports on the Sand C.Why Is It So Hard to Walk on Sand? D.Where Are the Athletes Trained? Passage 3 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. And showing the world that you have lots of friends, for example on social media, seems like a great idea. If that is the truth, your goal is to enlarge your social network. Once people see how popular you are, they’ll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that some of your popularity will rub off on them. Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle. However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time? It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you. In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend those who have fewer friends than they do, rather than those with more friends. The authors call this phenomenon (现象) the “friend-number paradox (悖论)”, which is also the title of their new paper. Social ties are obviously important. Having more of these connections suggests greater social value, and more potential possibilities. So it seems reasonable to assume that people will focus their social energies on making friends with people who have lots of friends already. But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity (互惠) involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friendsmay not be able to carry out those responsibilities— especially those with too many friends. In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become dilute (稀释的), making you less able to be a good friend. And other people will consider the fact when deciding whether to make friends with you. They don’t want to spend their valuable social resources on someone who is unlikely to pay it back. 9.What do the underlined words “rub off on” in paragraph l mean? A.Look forward to. B.Hold on to. C.Have an impact on. D.Take control of. 10.What does the “friend-number paradox” show? A.The secrets to becoming popular. B.The ways of winning more friends. C.The advantages of having many friends. D.The problems with having many friends. 11.What does the author think of people with lots of friends? A.They don’t know about reciprocity. B.They may fail to perform their duties. C.They are more likely to be good friends. D.They have more valuable social resources. 12.What would be the best title for the text? A.How Do People Choose Their Friends? B.More Friends Are Not Necessarily Better C.Why Do People Like Having More Friends? D.People With More Friends Are More Popular 主题02 人与自然——灾害防范 Passage 1 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) Last September, a strange seismic signal (地震信号), lasting more than a week, attracted the attention of researchers around the world. It took 68 experts from 15 countries to discover the cause of the “USO” -Unidentified Seismic Object. The term USO is used informally by scientists for unusual seismic signals that can’t be explained, according to Kristian Svennevig, the lead author of a new report on this signal. From the start, scientists agreed this signal was not from an earthquake. Svennevig compared earthquakes to hitting piano keys with force, creating a mix of sounds that disappeared quickly. However, the unusual signal was like a single piano key producing a clear sound that lasted for nine days. Researchers tracked the signal to a huge snowslide in eastern Greenland’s Dickson fjord (峡湾), which was formed by melting (融化) ice due to climate change. Some 1.2 kilometers above the fjord, a mountaintop fell, driving more than 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the water-enough to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The resulting tsunami (海啸) reached a height of 200 meters. The wave’s energy was caught in the rocky fjord, causing the water to move back and forth. This movement created the seismic signal. Svennevig noted that understanding this event took time. Even when they had ideas about what happened, they needed more information and improved models to support their findings. “We could only show that the tsunami was caught and kept moving inside the fjord for nine days after we used special army maps and improved our tsunami models,” Svennevig explained. To the researchers, the signal served as a wakeup call-similar events may happen with landfalls in other fjords or lakes due to climate change, which could lead to more landfalls and tsunamis in the Arctic. Understanding this event helps scientists learn more about how the Earth is changing due to global warming. There is still much to discover as we face the effects of climate change. 13.Why did Svennevig mention piano keys? A.To explain the strange signal. B.To introduce a musical instrument. C.To compare the sounds in nature. D.To give tips on playing the piano. 14.What caused the seismic signal? A.A wildfire. B.A snowslide. C.A heavy rain. D.An earthquake. 15.What can we know from Svennevig’s words? A.It’ll take much time to receive the seismic signal. B.It’s slow for scientists to find an answer to the event. C.A group of scientists was caught in the deadly tsunami. D.The researchers will make public the recent finding soon. 16.What does the author stress in the text? A.Landfalls always happen along with tsunamis. B.Scientists should keep an open mind on opinions. C.This event may shape our view on various cultures. D.The signal gives us fair warning of climate change. Passage 2 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) Wearing heavy cotton clothing, head protection and a device to help her breathe, Jessica Ball recently spent the night observing lava (岩浆) coming out of Hawaii’s Kilauca Volcano. Ball is a researcher from the United States Geological Survey, the agency which studies the country’s land and natural resources. She was at “fissure 8”, one of at least 22 holes that have opened around the Kilauea Volcano in the past two months. Rock from deep inside the volcano is so hot that it has become a liquid. The liquid, known as lava, began flowing from the openings in early May. At “fissure 8”, the lava shot up as high as 45 meters in the air before slowly heading for the Pacific Ocean a few kilometers away. Scientists have been in the area of the volcanic activity measuring the eruptions 24 hours a day, seven days a week since Kilauea first erupted. The severe heat will melt (融化) any non-natural clothing materials, so the team members can only wear heavy cotton. Gloves protect their hands from sharp volcanic rock and glass. Head coverings protect against falling lava stones, and breathing devices protect against gases coming from the openings. Kilauea has been erupting almost without stopping since 1983. It is one of the world’s most closely observed volcanoes. Most of these observations took place at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Kilauea’s highest point, from which researchers have now had to escape. But the latest eruption is the biggest and could provide scientists with a lot of new information. Ball says they want to learn what warning signs may exist for future eruptions to better protect Hawaii’s communities. Hundreds of small earthquakes caused by the eruptions have damaged the structure of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. So scientists pulled equipment and records out of the building and moved them to the University of Hawaii at Hilo. 17.Why do scientists wear heavy cotton clothes while observing the volcano? A.They can bear severe heat. B.They are natural and healthy. C.They are comfortable to wear. D.They can stop poisonous gases. 18.What is special about the latest eruption? A.It lasts long. B.It has wide influence. C.It is closely observed. D.It offers much information. 19.What is Ball’s purpose in gathering useful information? A.To prevent eruptions. B.To predict eruptions. C.To find the cause of eruptions. D.To measure the power of eruptions. 20.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.The Hawaii Volcano Has Been Erupting B.The Greatest Eruption Appears in Hawaii C.Scientists Risk Heat and Gas to Study a Volcano D.A rare Chance to Observe Volcano Passage 3 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states — from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the midwest. More than 100 tornado warnings were issued — the most ever for a day. The tornado in Kentucky caused at least 50 people’s deaths. which was described as the worst in this state’s history. As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is also one of the most geographically various countries — from deserts to forests to miles of coastline. While this comes with many advantages, it unfortunately leaves the country easily damaged by all kinds of natural disasters. Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters. The west coast is at risk of wildfires, earthquakes, and even volcanic eruptions. The southern part of the country is frequently hit by tornadoes, and the east coast faces the threat of serious hurricanes every year. Midwestern areas near rivers are often flooded by huge floods, and these are the worst floods in American history. The governments reviewed the weather event in each state’s history that caused the highest number of deaths to determine the worst natural disaster in every state. Thanks to their location and geographic research, some states made preparations ahead of time to avoid mass-casualty (重大伤亡的) weather events. However, many other parts of the country have been less fortunate, experiencing massive storms and floods. Many such events, like the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston of Texas, killed so many people that it was impossible to get an exact number of final deaths, especially, during that time. American weather continues to become more changeable. In 2018, there were 14 weather events that caused over $1 billion in damage. And in many parts of the country, these weather events could become even more destructive (毁灭性的) because of global warming. 21.What do we know from the numbers in paragraph 1? A.Less and less natural disasters hit America. B.Tornadoes were the greatest threat to Americans. C.The tornado in Kentucky was the worst in America. D.America suffered from serious natural disasters. 22.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A.The natural disasters in different parts of US. B.The earthquakes in the west coast of US. C.The hurricanes along the east coast of US. D.The worst floods in American history. 23.Which of the following can best describe American’s weather in the future? A.Controllable. B.Unchangeable. C.Pleasant. D.Worrying. 主题03 人与自我——做人与做事 Passage 1 (24-25高一上·宁夏银川·期中) During the winter break, I found my dad’s old CD player in a drawer that I had never seen before. It reminded me of the three CDs I recently bought from Mostly Books, a second-hand media store on South Street. I knew I could put the player to good use with them. However, I was a naughty kid who broke closet doors and shelves, so my dad was often unwilling to let me borrow his things. I couldn’t decide whether to ask my dad about using the player. “Can you help me with your old CD player? I want to play some CDs,” I finally asked him after walking into his home office that day. Despite my worries, my dad said yes. Growing up, I felt that my dad disagreed with nearly everything I did. I was frightened to take his advice because listening to him felt like going against my own ideas.     That day I looked at his office wall and saw a painting and he told me he bought it in the 1990s for a couple thousand dollars. Imagining him buying the artwork challenged my idea of him being too frugal (节俭的) and boring (没有情调的) to spend so much money on art. This new side of my dad encouraged me to finally take the time to look for our similarities. I discovered how similar we really are while fixing the CD player with my dad, which helped me see him as someone I could relate to, instead of someone to avoid. Watching my dad prepare his old CD player for use was my first step toward understanding him. I observed several of his characters that I recognized in myself, like persistence, patience and calmness. Seeing these characters in my dad showed me how similar we are, which lowered the defenses (防御) I built against him, allowing our relationship to heal (愈合). 24.Why couldn’t the author decide whether to ask his dad about using the player at first? A.He had no CDs to play then. B.He feared his dad would say no. C.He figured the CD player was broken. D.He was afraid he’d break the CD player. 25.What was the problem between the author and his father? A.They often had different views. B.They hardly talked to each other. C.They had no similar personalities. D.They were shy to speak for themselves. 26.What did the author most probably realize after knowing about the painting? A.He should challenge his father. B.His father was very good at art. C.His father was a really boring man. D.He might not really know about his father. 27.What happened between the author and his father in the end? A.They often argued with each other. B.They greatly misunderstood each other. C.They got on with each other much better. D.They built great defenses against each other. Passage 2 (24-25高一上·宁夏银川·期中) At Granger High School, freshmen (新生) came from different junior high schools. Some freshmen were worried and nervous when going into senior high school. “When we were registering (注册) for our classes, I was a little nervous. I didn’t know anyone at Granger. I’m kind of social. If a teacher puts me with someone, I can get along well with them. However, it’s different starting in a new school with lots of strangers,” Mark Calderon said.    While many had similar feelings to Calderon, others had a different opinion. “ I didn’t really care about going to senior high school. I already had lots of friends at Granger. Besides, my friends from other junior high schools were going to go to Granger, so going there meant we all would get to be together,” Jordan Thomas said.     The transition (过渡) to senior high school is just the first part. The other part is being able to get through high school with a comfortable experience, meaning trying to get the grades they want. “I’m not doing so well in my schoolwork.” Calderon said. Many other freshmen can relate. The first year of senior high school can be difficult for students to get used to because classes are more difficult than those in junior high school. The pace (节奏) feels a little faster for those who have a hard time dealing with their study.     Not only that, surveys also showed that about 40 percent of freshmen are always not going to school. Unluckily, lots of freshmen have failing grades. “The time that’s provided for them on Mondays and Tuesdays is to help them catch up in classes. Instead they’re busy talking to their friends and playing around,” Mr Timothy, a senior high school teacher, said. 28.What worried Mark Calderon ? A.His grades. B.His personality. C.Fast - paced high school life. D.Relationship with new classmates. 29.What did Jordan Thomas say about his new life in senior high school ? A.He was afraid of it. B.He had no idea of it. C.He avoided sharing it. D.He looked forward to it. 30.What does the author mean by writing “ Many other freshmen can relate.” in paragraph 3? A.Many freshmen have similar experiences. B.Many freshmen will get used to new life. C.Many freshmen want to get good grades. D.Many freshmen will get on well with others. 31.What does the last paragraph focus on ? A.Ways that help keep students’ grades up. B.Reasons why students fall behind in study. C.Students’ difficulties in improving their grades. D.Teachers’ worry about the future of their students. Passage 3 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) When we’re in trouble, we always ask our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground? Social networking sites have become extensions(延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they didn’t need to know more about technology. However, many parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation(动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them, there’s also a amount of control over privacy(隐私) that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(违背) when we must accept a “friend” request from family members. It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow parents to become a part of our online lives. Sometimes we don’t want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. But if you do accept, then you will feel yourself being watched and no longer feel free to communicate the way you did before. A survey suggested parents shouldn’t take it personally if their children overlook(忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it means that he wants to be independent. Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you choose not to add them to your friend list. 32.What can we infer from Paragraph 2? A.Parents feel secure about their privacy online. B.Parents have realized the importance of social networks. C.Social networks successfully fill the generation gap. D.Social networks offer parents a motivation to educate themselves. 33.What maybe the reason for teenagers to refuse a parent’s friend request? A.They hide something from their parents. B.Their parents make negative comments on them. C.They are unwilling to be watched by parents. D.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology. 34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about? A.How to use the social networks correctly. B.How do social networks affect people’s life. C.Why do most of teenagers refuse their parents’ friend requests. D.How to reduce the unpleasant influence of refusing parents’ friend requests. 35.What is the best title of the passage? A.Parents’ Friend Requests. B.Privacy Online. C.The Importance of Relationship. D.The Development of Social Networks. Passage 4 (24-25高一上·山西省晋城·期中) As remote work (远程办公) becomes more common, companies are rethinking their office spaces. Traditional setups with small offices and private rooms are being replaced by open designs that encourage teamwork, creativity, and employee well-being. A study by Global Workplace Analytics found that businesses can save an average of $11,000 per year for each employee who works remotely half the time. This is because of reduced costs for office spaces, services, and repairs. Employees also save money on traveling to work, clothing, and lunches, which benefits small to mid-sized businesses. However, remote work presents challenges. Employees often feel lonely and disconnected from their coworkers, which can lead to decreased drive and productivity. To address this, companies are spending on technology that supports online teamwork and communication. Video conferencing tools, project management software, and messaging platforms help connect remote workers and their in-office teammates. Some companies also organize online team-building activities to keep a sense of community. The move to remote work has led to a review of work-life balance. Many employees appreciate the freedom to manage their work schedules around personal responsibilities, such as childcare or eldercare. However, others struggle to separate work from home life, leading to longer working hours and possible tiredness. Employers are encouraged to set clear limits and expectations to help employees keep a healthy balance. For instance, some companies have rules that discourage after-hours emails and encourage regular breaks. Moreover, remote work greatly affects the environment. With fewer employees traveling to work, there is a large reduction in carbon pollution, which decreases overall pollution. Companies recognize the importance of being eco-friendly and include remote work as part of their social responsibility efforts. Overall, remote work is changing business practices. Companies are finding new ways to support employees, balancing cost savings and freedom with the challenges of loneliness and work-life balance. This shift offers opportunities to adopt more green and employee-friendly practices. 36.What is the benefit of remote work for small to mid-sized businesses? A.Increased diversity in hiring. B.Improved employee teamwork. C.Faster response to market changes. D.Lower costs for office-related expenses. 37.What should companies focus on to keep employees productive remotely? A.Offering more training. B.Planning in-person events. C.Letting employees choose work hours. D.Spending on online communication tools. 38.What is a main challenge employees face in remote work? A.Lacking job security. B.Managing work-life balance. C.Attending too many social events. D.Finding affordable transportation. 39.What is one positive impact of remote work according to the passage? A.It reduces the need for team-building activities. B.It lowers pollution by reducing travel to work. C.It allows employees to spend more time with family. D.It increases productivity by increasing working hours. 1 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 专题01 阅读理解 应用文 主题01 人与自我——生活与学习 Passage 1 (24-25学年高一上·山西晋城·期中) Parks and Recreation Central Park It is a large public park located in the heart of New York City. 根据文章第一段“My parents, who speak English, stressed using different languages at home — even Grandpa could speak a foreign language!(我的父母说英语,他们强调在家里使用不同的语言——甚至爷爷也会说外语!)”及倒数第二段“Despite having returned to the UK ten years ago, now I still often find myself stuck in English conversations, unable to express a thought or feeling with quite the same depth as I would be able to in Spanish.(尽管我十年前回到了英国,但现在我仍然经常发现自己陷入英语对话中,无法像用西班牙语那样有深度地表达思想或感觉)”可推知,作者的父母都说英语,家乡在英国,因此,作者的母语是英语。故选B。 8. 根据文章第一段“Because in French class it was easy to imagine we were somewhere else, away-far away-from the present, which was a really attractive idea to a young child with a wild imagination.(因为在法语课上很容易想象我们在别的地方,离现在很远很远,这对一个想象力丰富的孩子来说是一个很有吸引力的想法)”可知,作者在法语课上感到快乐是因为可以想象一个美好的世界。故选A。 9. 根据文章第三段“Looking back, it strikes me that Spanish, for me, was always about feelings. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you progress through school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity (成熟) and sense of responsibility. A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same. Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are superficial (表面的) only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”. True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is happy to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence. 15.What’s the main idea of the first paragraph? A.How to make true friends. B.What is friendship based on. B.Deep and relaxing. C.Loud and annoying. D.Clear and comfortable. 29.Which of the following can be a result of noise pollution? A.Fast breathing. B.Slow heart rate. C.Low blood pressure. D.Fast digestive system. 30.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.A responsible government cares for the environment. B.Joint actions are needed to control noise pollution. C.People making noise pollution should be punished. D.Detailed plans help create a noise-free environment. 31.What is the text mainly about? A.Facts about noise pollution. 根据第二段中“And his former company learned from its mistake. The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce new ideas that are good for something. (创造力不是一个人与生俱来的东西,也不一定是高智商的特征。一个人的高智商并不意味着他会创造性地运用它。创造力是指利用自己拥有的资源产生对某事有益的新想法。)”可知,从文章中我们可以知道创造力是一种运用所学知识解决新问题的方法。故选C项。 3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers.(不幸的是,学校并没有尝试鼓励创造力。由于高度重视考试成绩以及阅读、写作和数学技能的发展,许多教育工作者放弃了对正确答案的创造性。)”可推知,学校不鼓励创造力是因为他们非常重视考试结果。故选B项。 4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As children grow older, parents should try to let them decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.(随着孩子长大,父母应该让他们决定如何利用时间或花钱。这是因为有创造力的人最重要的特点是有一种非常强烈的欲望,想要找到摆脱困境的方法。)”可知,孩子决定如何花钱时,父母应该让他们试一试。故选A项。 Passage 2 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. 【答案】5.D 6.A 7.A 8.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 根据第一段中“For some people, nothing beats a long walk on a sandy beach. But there’s no denying that it’s not as easy or as fast to get around on the beach as it is on a road or a sidewalk. But why is it so hard to walk on sand? (对一些人来说,没有什么比在沙滩上散步更惬意的了。但不可否认的是,在海滩上走动并不像在公路或人行道上那样容易或快捷。但为什么在沙滩上行走如此困难呢?)”以及下文对“为什么在沙滩上走比较困难”的解释可知,本段提出这个问题是为了吸引读者对这个话题的注意。故选D项。 6.细节理解题。根据第三段中“If water isn’t an option, there is another way to make walking on sand easier — increasing your surface area. This could be achieved by wearing shoes. (如果没有水,还有另一种方法可以让在沙滩上行走更容易——增加你的表面积。这可以通过穿鞋来实现)”可知,通过穿表面积更大的鞋能更轻松地在沙滩上行走。故选A项。 7. 通读全文,尤其根据第二段中“The problem with sand is that it’s soft; you ‘sink in’ at each step. This forces you to use 2.1 to 2.7 times more energy with every step you take. Another idea is that people walk more difficultly on soft than they do on hard surfaces, a study found. (沙子的问题在于它很软;你每走一步都要‘沉下去’。这迫使你每走一步都要多消耗2.1到2.7倍的能量。一项研究发现,另一种观点是,人们在柔软的表面上行走比在坚硬的表面上行走更困难)”可知,本文介绍了一项科学研究,说明了为什么人们在沙滩上行走困难,所以本文可能取自一本科学杂志。故选A项。 8. 通读全文,根据第一段中“But why is it so hard to walk on sand? (但为什么在沙滩上行走如此困难呢?)”等内容可知,本文介绍了一项科学研究,说明了为什么人们在沙滩上行走这么困难。C项符合主题,故选C项。 Passage 3 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) Having friends is obviously good for countless reasons. D.People With More Friends Are More Popular 【答案】9.C 10.D 11.B 12.B 【导语】本文为一篇说明文。 根据文章第一段“Once people see how popular you are, they’ll want to join that popular circle, perhaps in the hope that(一旦人们看到你有多受欢迎,他们就会想加入那个受欢迎的圈子,也许是希望)”及划线词所在单句并联合下一句“Thus, they may enlarge their friend circle.(因此,他们可能会扩大他们的朋友圈)”可知,当人们看到你受欢迎,会希望你的受欢迎度会影响他们,这样他们就会扩大自己的朋友圈,画线部分词与Have an impact on.(影响)意思相近。故选C项。 10. 根据文章第三段“In fact, a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology shows that having too many friends may work against you. In a series of experiments, the authors prove that people usually prefer to befriend those who have fewer friends than they do, rather than those with more friends. The authors call this phenomenon the “friend-number paradox”, which is also the title of their new paper.(事实上,发表在《个性与社会心理学杂志》上的一项新研究表明,朋友太多可能会对你不利。在一系列实验中,作者证明,人们通常更喜欢和朋友比自己少的人交朋友,而不是和朋友多的人交朋友。作者称这种现象为“朋友数量悖论”,这也是他们新论文的标题)”可知,“朋友数悖论”说明了有很多朋友的问题。故选D项。 11.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“But the problem is that these social ties are only valuable if there’s reciprocity involved. Friendship goes hand in hand with certain responsibilities and expectations. And people with lots of friends may not be able to carry out those responsibilities— especially those with too many friends.(但问题是,这些社会关系只有在涉及互惠的情况下才有价值。友谊伴随着一定的责任和期望。有很多朋友的人可能无法履行这些责任,尤其是那些朋友太多的人)”可知,作者认为有很多朋友的人可能无法履行作为朋友的职责。故选B项。 12.主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“However, can a person even have too many friends at the same time? It’s always been a misunderstanding that if you have more friends, people will be more likely to want to be friends with you.(然而,一个人能同时拥有太多的朋友吗?如果你有更多的朋友,人们就会更愿意和你做朋友,这一直是一个误解)”及最后一段“In other words, “friendship quality” matters as much, if not more, than only the number of friends you have. Having lots of friends means your valuable social resources become dilute, making you less able to be a good friend.(换句话说,“友谊的质量”与你拥有的朋友的数量一样重要,甚至更重要。拥有太多的朋友意味着你宝贵的社会资源被稀释,使你不能成为一个好朋友)”及全文内容可知,本文介绍了拥有太多的朋友不一定就越好,友谊的质量更重要。B选项“朋友不一定越多越好”与本文主旨相符,可以作为本文的最佳标题。故选B项。 主题02 人与自然——灾害防范 Passage 1 (24-25高一上·山西太原·期中) Last September, a strange seismic signal (地震信号), lasting more than a week, attracted the attention of researchers around the world. 由文章第三段“Svennevig compared earthquakes to hitting piano keys with force, creating a mix of sounds that disappeared quickly. However, the unusual signal was like a single piano key producing a clear sound that lasted for nine days.(Svennevig将地震比作用力敲击钢琴键,创造出一种很快消失的混合声音。然而,这个不寻常的信号就像一个钢琴琴键发出的清晰声音,持续了九天。)”可知,Svennevig提到钢琴琴键来解释这个奇怪的信号。故选A项。 14. 与文章第四段“Researchers tracked the signal to a huge snowslide in eastern Greenland’s Dickson fjord (峡湾), which was formed by melting (融化) ice due to climate change. Some 1.2 kilometers above the fjord, a mountaintop fell, driving more than 25 million cubic meters of rock and ice into the water-enough to fill 10,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.(研究人员将信号追踪到格陵兰岛东部迪克森峡湾的一场巨大雪崩,这场雪崩是由气候变化导致的冰川融化形成的。在峡湾上方约1.2公里处,一座山顶坍塌,将2500多万立方米的岩石和冰块冲入水中,足以填满1万个奥运会标准游泳池。)”可知,格陵兰岛东部迪克森峡湾的一场巨大雪崩引发了这种异常的地震信号。故选B项。 15.推理判断题。由文章倒数第二段“Svennevig noted that understanding this event took time. Even when they had ideas about what happened, they needed more information and improved models to support their findings. (Svennevig指出,理解这一事件需要时间。即使他们对发生的事情有想法,他们也需要更多的信息和改进的模型来支持他们的发现。)”可知,科学家们需要更多的信息和改进的模型来支持他们的发现,由此可推断,科学家们要找到这一事件的答案很缓慢。故选B项。 16.推理判断题。由文章最后一段“To the researchers, the signal served as a wakeup call-similar events may happen with landfalls in other fjords or lakes due to climate change, which could lead to more landfalls and tsunamis in the Arctic. Understanding this event helps scientists learn more about how the Earth is changing due to global warming. There is still much to discover as we face the effects of climate change.(对于研究人员来说,这个信号是一个警钟,由于气候变化,其他峡湾或湖泊的登陆也可能发生类似的事件,这可能会导致北极更多的登陆和海啸。了解这一事件有助于科学家更多地了解地球如何因全球变暖而变化。面对气候变化的影响,我们仍有许多发现。)”可知,作者强调,这一信号是为我们提供了气候变化的警告。故选D项。 Passage 2 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) Wearing heavy cotton clothing, head protection and a device to help her breathe, Jessica Ball recently spent the night observing lava (岩浆) coming out of Hawaii’s Kilauca Volcano. A.The Hawaii Volcano Has Been Erupting B.The Greatest Eruption Appears in Hawaii C.Scientists Risk Heat and Gas to Study a Volcano D.A rare Chance to Observe Volcano 【答案】17.A 18.D 19.B 20.C 【导语】这是一篇新闻报道,最近,夏威夷的一座火山爆发了,科学家们日夜奋战,穿着厚厚的防护服在距离火山尽可能近的地方观察并收集信息。 17. 根据第四段第二句“The severe heat will melt (融化) any non-natural clothing materials, so the team members can only wear heavy cotton.(酷热会融化任何非天然的服装材料,所以队员们只能穿厚重的棉质衣物)”可知,火山爆发产生的高温能熔化任何非天然的衣物材料,所以科学家们只能穿着厚重、能抵御高温的棉质衣物。故选A。 18. 根据第五段最后一句“But the latest eruption is the biggest and could provide scientists with a lot of new information.(但最近的喷发是最大的,可以为科学家提供很多新信息)”可知,最近这次喷发的特殊之处在于规模大,能为科学家提供很多信息,故选D。 19. 根据第六段“Ball says they want to learn what warning signs may exist for future eruptions to better protect Hawaii’s communities.(Ball说,他们想了解未来火山爆发可能存在的警告信号,以更好地保护夏威夷的社区)”可知,Ball希望对未来可能发生的火山爆发进行预测,故选B。 20. 根据全文内容,结合第一段“Wearing heavy cotton clothing, head protection and a device to help her breathe, Jessica Ball recently spent the night observing lava (岩浆) coming out of Hawaii’s Kilauca Volcano.(Jessica Ball穿着厚重的棉衣、头部保护装置和帮助呼吸的装置,最近一整晚都在观察夏威夷基劳卡火山喷发的熔岩)”可知,本文开篇点题,指出Jessica Ball在观察夏威夷的一座正在喷发的火山,下文围绕这一话题展开,说明Jessica Ball和其他科学家冒着高温、落石和有毒气体的危险,日夜不停地在离火山很近的地方收集信息,以期待能更好地保护居民,C项“科学家冒着高温和气体的危险研究火山”为最佳标题,故选C。 Passage 3 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states — from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the midwest. C.Pleasant. D.Worrying. 根据第一段“Over the last two days in December last year, nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states — from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the midwest. 【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.C 【导语】这是一篇记叙文,作者从小到大都和父亲意见不合,但一次借CD播放机的时候作者得知父亲花几千美元买了一幅画,这让作者意识到自己从未真正了解父亲,于是作者花时间寻找自己和父亲的相似之处,两人的关系也得以缓和。 24.细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, I was a naughty kid who broke closet doors and shelves, so my dad was often unwilling to let me borrow his things. I couldn’t decide whether to ask my dad about using the player.(然而,我是一个淘气的孩子,经常打破壁橱的门和架子,所以我爸爸经常不愿意让我借他的东西。我拿不定主意要不要去问爸爸要不要用那台播放器)”可知,作者是一个淘气的孩子,父亲经常不愿意借东西给作者,所以作者犹豫是否要向父亲借用播放器是因为害怕父亲不同意,故选B。 25.细节理解题。根据第三段“Growing up, I felt that my dad disagreed with nearly everything I did. I was frightened to take his advice because listening to him felt like going against my own ideas.(从小到大,我觉得父亲几乎不同意我做的每一件事。我不敢接受他的建议,因为听他的话就像是违背了我自己的想法)”可知,作者和父亲之间的问题是他们经常有不同意见,故选A。 26.推理判断题。根据第四段“That day I looked at his office wall and saw a painting and he told me he bought it in the 1990s for a couple thousand dollars. Imagining him buying the artwork challenged my idea of him being too frugal (节俭的) and boring (没有情调的) to spend so much money on art.(那天我在他办公室的墙上看到了一幅画,他告诉我这幅画是他在上世纪90年代花了几千美元买的。想象他会买那幅画让我怀疑对他的看法,我一直以为他太节俭、太无聊了,不会在艺术品上花那么多钱)”可知,作者一直认为父亲节俭、无聊,不会在艺术品上花那么多钱,所以知道父亲花了几千美元买下这幅画后意识到自己可能没有真正了解父亲,故选D。 27.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Seeing these characters in my dad showed me how similar we are, which lowered the defenses (防御) I built against him , allowing our relationship to heal (愈合).(看到父亲身上的这些品质,我发现我们是多么相似,这降低了我对他的防御,让我们的关系得以愈合)”可知,最后作者和父亲关系得以愈合,相处的更好,故选D。 Passage 2 (24-25高一上·宁夏银川·期中) At Granger High School, freshmen (新生) came from different junior high schools. I didn’t know anyone at Granger. I’m kind of social. If a teacher puts me with someone, I can get along well with them. However, it’s different starting in a new school with lots of strangers,” Mark Calderon said.(“当我们注册课程时,我有点紧张。我在格兰杰谁也不认识。我有点社交。如果老师把我和别人放在一起,我就能和他们相处得很好。然而,在一所新学校和许多陌生人开始是不一样的,”马克·卡尔德龙说)”可知,马克·卡尔德隆担心与新同学的关系。故选D项。 29.推理判断题。根据第二段“While many had similar feelings to Calderon, others had a different opinion. “I didn’t really care about going to senior high school. I already had lots of friends at Granger. Besides, my friends from other junior high schools were going to go to Granger, so going there meant we all would get to be together,” Jordan Thomas said.(虽然许多人与卡尔德隆有相似的感受,但也有人有不同的看法:“我真的不关心上高中。我在格兰杰已经有很多朋友了。此外,我其他初中的朋友也要去格兰杰,所以去那里意味着我们都能在一起,”乔丹·托马斯说)”乔丹·托马斯说他在格兰杰高中有他初中的朋友,所以他是期待上高中。故选D项。 30.推理判断题。根据第三段““I’m not doing so well in my schoolwork.” Calderon said.(“我的功课不太好。”卡尔德隆说)”以及“The first year of senior high school can be difficult for students to get used to because classes are more difficult than those in junior high school. The pace (节奏) feels a little faster for those who have a hard time dealing with their study.(中的第一年对学生来说可能很难适应,因为课程比初中更难。 故选A项。 31. 根据最后一段“Not only that, surveys also showed that about 40 percent of freshmen are always not going to school. Unluckily, lots of freshmen have failing grades. “The time that’s provided for them on Mondays and Tuesdays is to help them catch up in classes. Instead they’re busy talking to their friends and playing around,” Mr Timothy, a senior high school teacher, said.(不仅如此,调查还显示,大约40%的高一新生总是不去上学。 Passage 3 (24-25高一上·陕西西安·期中) When we’re in trouble, we always ask our parents for help. 根据第二段中的“However, many parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives.(然而,许多父母开始意识到社交网络在他们的生活中有多么重要。)” 根据第三段中的“But if you do accept, then you will feel yourself being watched and no longer feel free to communicate the way you did before.(但如果你真的接受了,那么你会觉得自己被监视了,不再像以前那样自由交流了。)” 根据最后一段“Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you choose not to add them to your friend list.(如果你选择不把父母加入你的朋友名单,也许与他们交谈和解释会有助于减轻打击。)” 通读全文可知,第一段中的“But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground? Social networking sites have become extensions(延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as ‘friends’ and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?(但是你想让他们听到你和你的朋友在学校操场上的对话吗? 故选A。 Passage 4 (24-25高一上·山西省晋城·期中) As remote work (远程办公) becomes more common, companies are rethinking their office spaces. 根据文章第二段中“A study by Global Workplace Analytics found that businesses can save an average of $11,000 per year for each employee who works remotely half the time.
