When Smith moved from California to the Catskill mountains in New York in 2019, the self-employed journalist became his town’s newest volunteer firefighter at the age of 65.
It was Smith’s eye for a story that first made him notice the issue facing volunteer fire departments. “Speaking to fire chiefs, I realised they are in crisis since more than 60% of all firefighters in the US are volunteers, and rural areas can’t get young people to join,” he says. “The chief was trying to engage me as soon as I hit town and said that it didn’t matter about my age as there is a job for everyone.”
Smith signed up to train as an external firefighter, which meant he only dealt with fires from outside the burning structures rather than potentially running inside buildings to rescue people. “The external firefighting training owned my life for three months, with night classes and Saturday courses covering everything from operating a pump (泵) panel to throwing ladders,” he says. “We started every class with a “dressing drill”, racing to put 40lb (18kg) of equipment on in under a minute. We sometimes had to do it four or five times and I couldn’t walk steadily by the end. It immediately improved my fitness.”
Now 69, Smith has noticed a huge positive effect on his physical fitness thanks to his fire crew’s weekly drills. “It has definitely kept me feeling young,” he says. The greatest impact has come from helping people during some of the worst moments of their lives. “It’s massively rewarding to put yourself out there for strangers and they are so grateful to us, too,” he says.
Despite initially thinking he would stop volunteering at 70, as that milestone approaches, Smith is now committed to carrying on. “I feel like I’m still learning and that’s really exciting to me,” he says. “One of the essential things in life is to feel you have a purpose, and this is mine. I’ll keep going as long as I’m able. It gets in your blood.”
1. Why did Smith become a volunteer firefighter?
A. To improve his fitness. B. To adapt to a new place.
C. To cover firefighters’ stories. D. To help rural fire departments.
2. What was Smith required to do in the training?
A. Put out fires inside the building. B. Put on special clothes speedily.
C. Engage in long-distance running. D. Drill beginners to climb ladders.
3. What does Smith think of being a firefighter?
A. Demanding but worthy. B. Unstable but pleasant.
C. Exhausted but carefree. D. Risk-taking but well-paid.

根据第二段中的““Speaking to fire chiefs, I realised they are in crisis since more than 60% of all firefighters in the US are volunteers, and rural areas can’t get young people to join,” he says.“The chief was trying to engage me as soon as I hit town and said that it didn’t matter about my age as there is a job for everyone.”(“在与消防队长交谈时,我意识到他们正处于危机之中,因为美国60%以上的消防员都是志愿者,而农村地区无法吸引年轻人加入。”他说。“我一到镇上,局长就试图吸引我,并说我的年龄无关紧要,因为每个人都有一份工作。”)”可知,史密斯了解到农村消防部门面临“缺人”危机,因此选择成为志愿消防员,以帮助这些消防部门。故选D项。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“We started every class with a “dressing drill”, racing to put 40lb (18kg) of equipment on in under a minute.(我们每节课都以“着装训练”开始,要在一分钟内快速穿上40磅(18公斤)的装备)”可知,史密斯在培训中需要“快速穿上特殊装备(消防服等)”。
根据第三段中的“The external firefighting training owned my life for three months, with night classes and Saturday courses... We sometimes had to do it four or five times and I couldn’t walk steadily by the end.(外部消防员培训占据了我三个月的生活,有夜课和周六课程……我们有时要做四五次(着装训练),最后我都走不稳了)”可知,消防员工作(包括培训)“要求高、有难度”;再根据第四段中的“The greatest impact has come from helping people during some of the worst moments of their lives. “It’s massively rewarding to put yourself out there for strangers and they are so grateful to us, too,” he says.(最大的影响是在人们人生中最艰难的时刻帮助他们。他说:“为陌生人付出,他们也对我们充满感激,这非常有意义”)”可知,史密斯认为这份工作要求高但很值得。故选A项。

What do you do when you feel anxious about an upcoming interview or angry about a friend’s unfair comment on your behaviour? You may bury your feelings in a bag of chips. But not everyone turns to unhealthy eating to regulate unpleasant emotions.
Our latest research suggests that some people actually eat healthily to do so. You might wonder what's wrong with healthy food. Surely it can’t harm you? And for most people, it is harmless. But eating healthy food can become an unhealthy obsession (痴迷) called orthorexia nervosa (健康饮食强迫症), which has also been referred to as “clean eating”.
Because healthy eating and healthy lifestyles are generally considered desirable, it can be difficult to spot when healthy eating becomes an unhealthy obsession. But an obsession with healthy eating can be hard for your mental health as well as your relationships. Mentally, sufferers may experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and guilt around food, while socially, they may become isolated — avoiding meals with others and engaging in conflicts over dietary choices.
We signed up 196 people with an interest in healthy eating through targeted Facebook advertisements and community groups focused on healthy eating, nutrition, and wellness. Data collection was conducted online using a secure survey platform. Participants completed the questions privately, with an average completion time of 20 minutes. We found that participants with orthorexic tendencies felt out of control when upset and had difficulty knowing how to regulate their emotions. They also had trouble identifying and accepting their emotional reactions.
While not everyone who eats healthily will have orthorexic tendencies, people who use obsessive and restrictive dietary rules to regulate unpleasant feelings may be at risk of developing orthorexia nervosa.
With the increased adoption of trendy diets, more and more people may decide to eat more healthily and control what they are eating. While this may all be for a good cause, we recommend that people remain aware of when their healthy obsession may become unhealthy.
4. Why is orthorexia nervosa difficult to detect?
A. Healthy eating is less noticeable. B. Its physical harm is rarely visible.
C. Healthy habits are socially praised. D. It develops slowly in healthy eaters.
5. What do we know about the participants in the study?
A. They were randomly selected.
B. They suffered from orthorexia nervosa.
C. They took part by answering questions.
D. They followed special diets in the study.
6. What does the author suggest regarding healthy eating?
A. Monitor its potential risks. B. Build a more balanced diet.
C. Stick to strict dietary rules. D. Control food intake.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Trendy Diets: A New Health Guide
B. Healthy Eating: The Key to Regulate Emotion
C. Balanced Diets: For Your Mental and Physical Health
D. Orthorexia Nervosa: When Healthy Eating Becomes Harmful
C 5. C 6. A 7. D
根据第三段中的“Because healthy eating and healthy lifestyles are generally considered desirable, it can be difficult to spot when healthy eating becomes an unhealthy obsession.(因为健康饮食和健康生活方式通常被认为是值得追求的,所以当健康饮食变成一种不健康的痴迷时,很难被发现。)”
根据第四段中的“Data collection was conducted online using a secure survey platform. Participants completed the questions privately, with an average completion time of 20 minutes.(数据收集通过安全的调查平台在线进行。参与者私下完成问卷,平均完成时间为20分钟。)”可知,研究参与者通过回答问题的方式参与研究。故选C项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“While this may all be for a good cause, we recommend that people remain aware of when their healthy obsession may become unhealthy.(虽然这一切可能都是出于好的目的,但我们建议人们要留意自己对健康的痴迷何时可能变得不健康。)” 故选A项。
通读全文以及根据第一段“What do you do when you feel anxious about an upcoming interview or angry about a friend’s unfair comment on your behaviour? You may bury your feelings in a bag of chips. But not everyone turns to unhealthy eating to regulate unpleasant emotions.(当你因即将到来的面试感到焦虑,或是因朋友对你的行为做出不公评价而生气时,你会怎么做?
C
Have you ever worried that your life is a little ... ordinary? You can’t stand the thought of being average but, somehow, no matter how much you achieve, it never seems like enough. If this sounds familiar, you may have a touch of “koinophobia”: the fear of being ordinary.
“The fear of being ordinary is often rooted in the belief that we need to be ‘extraordinary’ to be loved and accepted by others,” says psychologist Rachel Vora. Social media has undeniably worsened the problem. With high-flying careers and picture-perfect holidays constantly presented as the norm, we can put pressure on ourselves to achieve more of the same.
So, if the fear of being ordinary threatens to disturb your peace, how can you get it under control? Rachel believes it starts with internal recognition. “When we place more value on the internal, we are less likely to attach our self-worth to external achievements,” Rachel points out. Focusing on internal recognition means appreciating your born value, and realizing how you make the world a better place, simply by being you.
It’s at this point that getting to know yourself and understanding what you actually want from life is key. “Being a businessman or travelling the world would not make everyone happy,” Rachel notes. “So it’s important to separate expectations on social media from your sense of self and know what would truly make you happy.”
Ultimately, Rachel says, it’s important to remember that being extraordinary will not increase your feelings of self-worth. You might assume that once you’ve reached a certain level of success you’ll finally feel like you have value. But that’s not the case and, Rachel says, once we truly accept this, we are more likely to look for the value in an ordinary life. Remember this: on a clear, cloudless night, you don’t have to climb the highest peak to be able to see the stars.
8. What is the underlying cause for koinophobia?
A. The need for social media popularity. B. The pursuit of being recognized.
C. The pressure from family and friends. D. The lack of a colorful lifestyle.
9. What does Rachel suggest as the first step to overcome koinophobia?
A. Pursuing ordinary lifestyles. B. Focusing on your achievements.
C. Appreciating your own value. D. Seeking help from others.
10. What does Rachel emphasize in paragraph 4?
A. The value of having business sense.
B. The impact of chasing social media trends.
C. The role of achieving extraordinary success.
D. The significance of knowing your true desires.
11. What does the underlined part “to see the stars” symbolize?
A. To achieve ambitious goals. B. To meet social expectations.
C. To stand out from the crowd. D. To find the meaning of life.
B 9. C 10. D 11. D

根据第二段中的“The fear of being ordinary is often rooted in the belief that we need to be ‘extraordinary’ to be loved and accepted by others,(对平凡的恐惧通常源于一种信念:我们需要“与众不同”才能被他人爱和接纳,)”可知,“恐平凡症”的根本原因是人们追求被他人爱与接纳,本质是对“被认可”的追求。
根据第三段中的“Rachel believes it starts with internal recognition. “When we place more value on the internal, we are less likely to attach our self-worth to external achievements,” Rachel points out. Focusing on internal recognition means appreciating your born value,(Rachel认为,要控制这种恐惧,首先要做到内在认可。Rachel指出:“当我们更重视内在时,就不太可能将自我价值依附于外在成就。”专注于内在认可,意味着欣赏自己与生俱来的价值,)”可知,Rachel建议克服“恐平凡症”的第一步是“欣赏自身价值”。故选C项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“It’s at this point that getting to know yourself and understanding what you actually want from life is key. “Being a businessman or travelling the world would not make everyone happy,” Rachel notes. “So it’s important to separate expectations on social media from your sense of self and know what would truly make you happy.(在这一点上,了解自己、明白自己在生活中真正想要什么至关重要。Rachel指出:“经商或环球旅行不会让所有人都快乐。因此,将社交媒体上的期待与自我认知区分开,知道什么能真正让自己快乐,这很重要。”)”可知,Rachel在第四段强调的是“了解自身真实渴望的重要性”——需明确自己真正想要的,而非盲目追随外界期待。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Ultimately, Rachel says,it’s important to remember that being extraordinary will not increase your feelings of self-worth... once we truly accept this, we are more likely to look for the value in an ordinary life. Remember this: on a clear, cloudless night, you don’t have to climb the highest peak to be able to see the stars.(Rachel说,最重要的是要记住,与众不同并不会提升你的自我价值感……一旦我们真正接受这一点,就更有可能在平凡的生活中寻找价值。记住:在晴朗无云的夜晚,你不必爬上最高的山峰,也能看见星星。)”可知,核心是“在平凡生活中寻找价值”,“看见星星”是对“找到生活价值”的比喻——无需通过“爬上高峰(追求非凡)”,在平凡中也能实现人生的意义。故选D项。
D
The number of people living with Parkinson's disease globally has doubled in the past 25 years, yet the treatment and monitoring of the disease seem many decades behind. Clinicians typically judge the severity of the disease using subjective rating scales (等级), and a shortage of doctors trained to treat Parkinson's means that people can go months — or years — between clinic visits. This leaves patients in a troubling spot, often unsure how quickly their disease is advancing.
To address this issue, Stanford Medicine researchers have developed a simple, portable device called the KeyDuo to help patients track their symptoms (症状) from home.
The idea came from treating performing artists with dystonia, a muscle disorder that musicians can develop. Researchers initially created a computerized keyboard to measure dystonia symptoms, and a pianist with Parkinson's disease happened to try it. He did the test one day while he was on his Parkinson's medicines and another day when he was off his medicines. The researchers realized they could tell the difference based on the keyboard data.
The critical difference between this device and other keyboards is that it has tension-engineered levers (杠杆), detecting how hard someone is pressing, the speed at which the lever moves, and exactly how far down it moves. Patients perform repetitive finger pressing on the levers for 30 seconds, and the device creates an assessment in real-time for the physician to view and make treatment-adjusting decisions.
Patients can stay at home for monitoring and take the device with them wherever they go. It's light and fits in the hand. Once it is paired with a mobile app on a smartphone or tablet, the test can be done anywhere, anytime, with the results sent to doctors in real time.
Recent research showed that after tracking eight patients for 30 days, the device effectively monitored how symptoms changed with medication. It is hoped that this kind of continuous monitoring system will allow people to manage their medicines more carefully and allow healthcare providers to look after people between these rare visits.
12. Which is one of the challenges faced by Parkinson's patients according to paragraph 1?
A. High cost of treatment. B. Unreasonable clinic rules.
C. Unclear disease progression. D. Overuse of medications.
13. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A Share the origin of the keyboard.
B. Describe the symptoms of Parkinson’s.
C. Highlight the complexity of Parkinson’s.
D. Stress the role of musicians in the research.
14. What makes the KeyDuo special?
A. It can direct hand movements. B. It can sense hand press features.
C. It can strengthen finger muscles. D. It can improve hand flexibility.
15. Which aspect of the KeyDuo does the author focus on in paragraph 5?
A. Its potential use. B. Its main components.
C. Its major benefits. D. Its testing accuracy.
C 13. A 14. B 15. C

根据第一段中的“Clinicians typically judge the severity of the disease using subjective rating scales (等级), and a shortage of doctors trained to treat Parkinson's means that people can go months — or years — between clinic visits. This leaves patients in a troubling spot, often unsure how quickly their disease is advancing. (临床医生通常使用主观评分量表来判断病情的严重程度,而受过帕金森病治疗培训的医生短缺意味着患者可能数月甚至数年才能去看一次病。这让患者陷入困境,往往不确定自己的病情进展有多快。)”可知,帕金森病患者面临的挑战之一是“不清楚病情进展”。故选C项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The idea came from treating performing artists with dystonia, a muscle disorder that musicians can develop. 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“The critical difference between this device and other keyboards is that it has tension-engineered levers (杠杆), detecting how hard someone is pressing, the speed at which the lever moves, and exactly how far down it moves. (该设备与其他键盘的关键区别在于,它配备了张力设计的杠杆,能够检测使用者按压的力度、杠杆移动的速度以及移动的精确距离。)”可知,KeyDuo的特别之处在于它能感知手部按压的特征(力度、速度、距离)。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段中的“Patients can stay at home for monitoring and take the device with them wherever they go. It's light and fits in the hand. Once it is paired with a mobile app on a smartphone or tablet, the test can be done anywhere, anytime, with the results sent to doctors in real time. (患者可以在家进行监测,并且可以随身携带该设备。它重量轻,便于手持。一旦与智能手机或平板电脑上的移动应用程序配对,测试就可以在任何时间、任何地点进行,测试结果会实时发送给医生。)”可知,作者在第五段重点强调了KeyDuo的主要优势:可居家监测、便携、测试灵活、结果实时传输。故选C项。

第二节(满分25分)
72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was raining heavily outside. Raindrops pounded the ground as thunder rolled like drums. Lin Tao stood at the bus stop. His shoes were already wet through. He held a plastic bag tightly in his hands. Inside was a model plane which he had spent a month making. It was a birthday gift for his pen friend, Xiao Yu.
They got to know each other through the readers' letters section of Model Aviation. They had never seen each other, but for two years, they had written letters to each other. They talked about many things: their math teacher who was not easy to like, their same interest in planes, and even their secret worries about becoming adults.
Xiao Yu lived in a far mountain village. It took weeks for letters to get there. Lin Tao had promised to post the plane that morning, but the storm delayed his bus by over an hour. The post office would close in 20 minutes. Lin Tao tensed up, squaring his shoulders against the pounding rain and running clock. Then he started running. The rain beat against his face, as if trying to stop him. When he turned the corner near the big old tree, he slipped on a hidden pool. The plastic bag screamed open, and the model plane shot out, sliding across the wet road before sinking into a mud hole. Its thin wings bent in a bad way, and the propeller (螺旋桨) broke off completely.
“No!” Lin Tao cried out. He hurried to pick it up. His sleeve got covered in mud. The blue body of the plane, which he had painted carefully, was marked with brown spots. One of the wheels rolled into a drain (下水道) and disappeared. He looked at the broken plane in his hands. Hot tears mixed with the rain on his face. How could he break the promise to someone who had trusted him enough to tell him his deepest secrets?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Lin Tao rushed home, the broken plane in his hands.

One month later, a letter from Xiao Yu arrived.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Lin Tao rushed home, the broken plane in his hands. He kicked off his soaked shoes and placed the shattered model on his desk. The lamplight fell on the cracked wing, making it look like an ugly scar. Taking a deep breath, he dug out glue, scissors, some shiny stickers, and even a tiny wheel from his old toy. After hours of hard work, the plane looked a bit uneven, but it stood upright again. Then he wrote a letter: “...I’m sorry it’s broken, but I fixed it with all my heart. Just like friends — we don’t have to be perfect, right?”
One month later, a letter from Xiao Yu arrived. Lin Tao’s hands trembled as he unfolded the letter. Inside was a drawing: a boy who was grinning, holding a patched model plane against a backdrop of golden rice fields. Xiao Yu said, “Thank you for not giving up on your promise. It’s the coolest gift ever! The propeller spins when I run! I drew a map on the back. Would you come to visit next summer? How about making a new model plane together?” Outside, the rain had long stopped, and a faint rainbow curved over the roofs. Some promises, Lin Tao thought as he pinned the drawing above his desk, are really worth getting completely wet for.

A
When Smith moved from California to the Catskill mountains in New York in 2019, the self-employed journalist became his town’s newest volunteer firefighter at the age of 65.
B

C Appreciating your own value. D. Seeking help from others.
10. What does Rachel emphasize in paragraph 4?
A. The value of having business sense.
B. The impact of chasing social media trends.
C The role of achieving extraordinary success.
D. The significance of knowing your true desires.
11. What does the underlined part “to see the stars” symbolize?
A. To achieve ambitious goals. B. To meet social expectations.
C. To stand out from the crowd. D. To find the meaning of life.

A. Share the origin of the keyboard.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Lin Tao rushed home, the broken plane in his hands.
