What Is a Good Friend Like?
Cindy
I think a good friend should be honest. That’s more important than any other thing. And it is where a true friendship starts. If a friend isn’t honest, he may lose his friends’ trust.
Jerry
I think a good friend has to be generous (慷慨的). Being generous doesn’t mean he has to give his friends money or clothes. It means he should share his ideas and feelings with his friends. In fact, his friends can know him better in this way.
Mary
In my eyes, a good friend should know his friends well. When there’s something wrong between him and his friends, he must put himself in his friends’ place and think more about his friends.
1.Who would Jerry like to make friends with?
A.People who give him money. B.People who know him very well.

Maybe we usually meet a few wrong people before meeting the right one. So when we meet true friends, we will know how to be grateful for that.
What is a true friend? The best kind of friend is the person with whom you can sit on a chair. You can never say a word, and then walk away, feeling like it is the best conversation you’ve had. Friends are like books. You don’t need a lot of them as long as they are good and you can get much help from them.
It’s true that we don’t know what we’ve got until we lose it, so we should be grateful for everything we’ve got now including friendship. Don’t go for money. It will fade away (逐渐消失). Go for someone who makes you smile.
“Always put yourself in others’ shoes.” If you feel that it hurts you, it hurts others, too. A happy person doesn’t need to have the best of everything. He just makes the most of everything that comes along this way.
Try to forget unhappy things in the past. You can’t get on well in life until you let failure (失败) go.
1.How do you feel when you meet the right person?
A.Surprised. B.Sad. C.Grateful. D.Worried.

A.We can get much help from friends.
B.Only friends can make you smile.
C.Try not to hurt others’ feelings.
D.Let failure go.
Do you have many friends? Why do you need many friends? Friends are important because they make you happy, they share many nice things with you, and they’re there for you when you need help. Sometimes we may feel it difficult to make friends. The following two ways may help you make friends easily.
Make time for others. If you want to make friends, you need to have time to meet and talk with people. If you’re always busy, friends may not come to find you because they don’t want to bother (打扰) you. When you’re at school, you can sit somewhere with other people. It doesn’t have to be a crowded (人多的) table, but try to sit at one table with a few people.
Join a club to meet new people. You can join the art club at school if you like drawing. If you love to sing and dance, join the music club. You will find some people with the same hobby as you. It is easy for you to make friends with them because you can have a nice talk about your hobbies. And then you can talk more about your hobbies with them.
I hope everyone can have a lot of good friends and a happy life.

Friends play an important part in our lives. Teenager Center did a survey on “What is the most important thing about friendship?” 345 teenagers took part in the survey. The following is the result. Dr. Allen wrote a report to teenagers about it. Let’s read it together.
Honesty (诚信) is where a good friendship starts. You must tell true feelings to your friends. Keep their secrets to yourself and never break promises, or you may lose your friends.
Generosity (慷慨) means sharing, and sharing makes friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead, you share your ideas and feelings.
Understanding can be valuable (宝贵的) to a friend. Everyone needs understanding and help while facing a problem. You must try to put yourself in others’ shoes, so you can understand the problem better. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.
In fact, good friendships will not easily last long. Many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is the reason why some friendships don’t last very long. To keep a long friendship, you should give as much as you can.

进阶拓展训练5篇
There is an English saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed (真正地).” Everyone has dreams and goals, and friends who stand by us are special and important. But should friends help us even when we’re making bad choices? What if your friend wants you to do something wrong, like lying or skipping homework? Confucius, a wise teacher long ago, said, “A good friend helps you do kind and right things, not bad ones.”
Here is an example: everyone has dreams, and it is a great thing to have friends to stand by us. But you also need to know who is truly helping you. How can we tell what kind of person someone is? According to Confucius, just see what they encourage us to do. If they guide us to good things, they are true friends. But if they like bad actions, then you shouldn’t trust (信任) them.
Think about this: Your friend says, “Let’s play games all night!” It’s fun now but tomorrow you’ll feel tired and forget your schoolwork. A true friend would say, “Let’s finish homework first, then play for a short time. Tomorrow we’ll have lessons.”
Ask yourself:
1. Does my friend help me learn, share, or try harder?
2. Do they laugh when I make bad choices?
Good friends are like the sun—they help you grow. Tricky friends are like weeds (杂草)—they pull you down. Choose friends who make your heart proud!
Remember: If a friend makes you do wrong things, say “No” and talk to a grown-up. True friends always want you to be better and better!

There was another little boy called Alan. He couldn’t walk. He always dreamed of walking and running like other children. “Why can’t I be like them?” he thought.
One day, Mike came to a park. He saw Alan playing in the sandbox. Mike ran to Alan and asked, “Do you want to fly like a bird?”
“No, I just want to walk and run,” Alan answered.
“That’s too bad. Can we be friends?” Mike said.
“Sure,” Alan said happily.
The two little boys played together for hours. They built sand castles (城堡) and had a great time. Then Alan’s father came with a wheelchair (轮椅) to take him home. Mike ran to Alan’s father and whispered something in his ear.
“OK,” said the man.
Mike ran back to Alan and said, “You are my only friend. I can help you feel like you’re walking and running.” Then he let Alan climb onto his back. Mike began running fast across the grass. Have you ever played marbles (玻璃球) with your friends? How do you play this game?
One day, a young boy and girl were enjoying a sunny afternoon playing together in their neighborhood. The boy showed the girl his collection of beautiful marbles. In return, the girl showed the boy the handful of candy that she had just gotten for her birthday.
The boy suggested that the two of them exchange (交换) their collections—he would give her all of his marbles if she handed over all of her candy. The girl agreed, as she thought the marbles looked quite beautiful in the bright sun.
The boy handed over all of his marbles, but kept one—the most beautiful one of them all—in his pocket. The girl kept her promise (诺言) and gave the boy all of her candy.
That night, the girl was happy with the exchange and peacefully went to sleep. She had a nice dream.
The boy, however, couldn’t fall asleep, as he was wondering if the girl had secretly kept some of her candy, just like he did with the marble.
The story is simple, but it teaches us a lesson. If you don’t give 100% in your friendships, you will always think that your friend isn’t giving 100% either. If you want your friendships to be built on trust, you have to be worthy (值得的) of trust yourself.

Do you have any close friends? I’m sure you do. Everyone has a good friend or two. I learnt an interesting lesson about the power of friendship (友谊的力量) a few days ago.
It was a story about two friends—a Canadian girl named Jessica Stuart and a Japanese girl named Fukue. Stuart’s parents moved to Japan to work when she was a child. After Stuart met Fukue at school, they became good friends. Stuart often protected Fukue from bullies (欺凌).
After one year, Stuart’s family moved back home. Stuart and Fukue stayed in touch by writing letters to each other. But after two years, Fukue’s letters stopped coming.
Stuart didn’t know what happened. Why did the letters stop? She began a long journey (旅程) to find her old friend. Many years later, she found Fukue. Both girls were adults (成年人) by then. It turned out that Fukue dropped out of school (辍学) because she was bullied again after Stuart left. Luckily, they were able to find each other again, even after many years.

Friendship is one of the most valuable gifts in life. It is a relationship beyond age, gender (性别), culture, and even distance. Having friends means having a shoulder to cry on, and someone to share the joys and sadness of life with.
Firstly, friends provide emotions (情感的) support. They are the ones we can turn to when we feel lonely (孤单的), upset, or confused (困惑). Friends listen to our problems, give advice, and help us see things from a different way. This emotional support is important for keeping our mental health and well-being.
Secondly, friendship helps personal growth. Through our friends, we learn new things, discover new interests, and broaden (拓宽) our horizons (视野). Friends encourage us and push us to become better.
Moreover, sometimes friends are our partners in fun. They are the ones we go on trips with, see concerts or movies with, and generally enjoy life with. These shared experiences make our relationship stronger and create lifelong memories.
In short, friendship is an invaluable thing in our lives. It provides emotional support, helps personal growth, and makes our lives more colorful with shared experiences. True friends are few and should be treasured (珍惜).

The first time I saw August Pullman, he was sitting alone at the back of Mr. Browne’s classroom, his face half-hidden behind a tower of textbooks. Most new kids would’ve been scanning the room for friends, but he was too busy taking notes. When Mr. Browne wrote “CHOOSE KIND” on the board, he circled the words twice like they were the answer to some secret question only he knew.
I didn’t sit with August that first day because I felt sorry for him. I sat with him because he was laughing at Mr. Browne’s lesson. Most kids were rolling their eyes, but August was actually writing things down—like he truly cared about “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”
Later in the cafeteria, Julian kept asking those questions: “What happened to your face? Were you in a fire?” August handled it like an expert. He just said, “No, I was born this way. It’s called mandibulofacial dysostosis, if you really want to know.” Julian looked stupid then, because August knew more big words than he did.
What’s strange is how people treat me now that I’m friends with August. Some kids called me “Nice Summer” quietly like it’s an insult (侮辱). Others suddenly want to be my friend, asking all these fake-nice questions about him. The worst are the teachers—they give me these cheering looks, like I’m some kind of hero for eating lunch with him.
August doesn’t need my protection. Yesterday, some seventh-grader tripped him in the hallway. Before I could react, August got up and said, “Thanks for the floor examination. It looks clean.” The kid just walked away confused.
Sometimes I wonder why more people don’t see what I see: a funny kid who chews his pencils to death, who can name every planet’s moons, who remembers that I hate cream. Not “the kid with the face”. Just August.
But then I hear the whispers in the locker room, see the way kids suddenly change seats when he sits down…and I remember why this is so hard.
Walking home that afternoon, I remembered that Mom always says middle school is just practice for real life, but what’s the lesson here? That most people are too scared to sit next to someone different?
1.Why did Summer firstly sit with August?
A.She pitied his unusual appearance. B.She noticed his reaction to Mr. Browne’s lesson.
C.The teachers asked her to help him. D.She wanted to impress other students.
2.Summer finds others’ “Nice Summer” comments ________.
A.wise and encouraging B.hurtful but understandable
C.funny but insulting D.strange and annoying
3.August’s reaction to being tripped shows that he ________.
A.was afraid of a fight B.wanted to report bullies to teachers
C.relied on Summer for protection D.used humor wisely to solve problems
4.This passage mainly explores________.
A.the challenges August faces with his school work B.Summer’s development of true friendship

How many best friends do you have? What do you think of friendship? Enjoy the following three poems (诗) and find your answer.
Friendship is like the breeze (微风),
You can’t hold it,
Smell it,
Taste it,
Or know when it’s coming.

Hold on to me, my friend.

Once upon a time, there was a musician named Yu Boya. He was good at playing the guqin. However, he always felt that he didn’t have the highest level (水平), so he decided to take a boat trip to Penglai Island in the East China Sea. There, Yu Boya saw the waves (波浪) hitting the rocks, and the seabirds flying up and down and singing happily and loudly. At that moment, a creative idea went into his mind. He used his guqin to bring the beauty of nature and the touching sounds of the music together. Unluckily, no one could understand and enjoy what the music was about. He felt very lonely with a great pity.
One day, Yu Boya saw an old woodcutter listening to his music carefully on the seaside and then asked him to get in his boat. He played the music about the high mountain. The woodcutter described a picture of Mountain Tai in his mind. When Yu Boya played another piece of music to show the waves, the woodcutter seemed to watch a wild sea. Yu Boya shouted excitedly, “My dear friend, Zhong Ziqi, you are the confidant that understands me and my music!” A few years later, Zhong Ziqi passed away. Yu Boya cut off all the strings (琴弦) and stopped playing the guqin after he heard the news.
There are too few close friends as Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi did in the world. Yu Rang, a famous writer in the Warring States Period, once said, “A true man is ready to die for those who know the value of him.” Su Shi, another famous writer in the Song Dynasty, found no one could understand him in his difficult times, seeing himself as a lonely wild bird on a wasted sand island. It means he preferred (宁可) to live alone if he couldn’t find any confidant. Being a confidant has nothing to do with age, distance as well as wealth (财富). He is the one who can always share your joy and sadness. In some ways, a confidant can understand your every act and read your hidden meanings. Whether old or young, a confidant is hard to find. Everyone will never feel sorry for himself if he has a confidant in his life.
1.What did Yu Boya go on a trip to Penglai Island for?
A.Visiting his best friend. B.Enjoying the nature.
C.Improving his musical skill. D.Hearing seabirds singing.
2.What does the underlined word “confidant” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Wise parent. B.Strict teacher. C.Kind classmate. D.Close friend.
3.Why did Yu Boya stop playing the guqin after Zhong Ziqi died?
A.Because nobody could understand his music, anymore.
B.Because he had problems using the guqin to show feelings.
C.Because he succeeded in finding another confidant.
D.Because people did not like his music at all.
4.What’s the meaning of “A true man is ready to die for those who know the value of him.” in paragraph 3?
A.拣尽寒枝不肯栖,寂寞沙洲冷。 B.士为知己者死。
C.相知无远近,万里尚无邻。 D.人生乐在相知心。
5.What can we infer (推断) from the examples of Yu Boya, Zhong Ziqi, Yu Rang, and Su Shi?
A.True friendship is only in historical stories.
B.Finding a confidant is important for one.
C.Wealth makes a difference to a friendship.
D.It is easy to find true friends in hard times.

B.Sad. C.Grateful. D.Worried.
2.The second paragraph tells us ________.
A.what a true friend is like B.what we get from a friend

When you think about a friend’s influence on you, ask yourself: Do they help you become a better person? Or do they make you do bad things?

Not every friendship can last forever. People come and go. But true friends can find a way to stay together forever—even if they’ve been far apart for a long time.

C.teachers’ unfair treatment of special needs students D.Julian’s bullying behavior and its results

3.推理判断题。根据“August got up and said, ‘Thanks for the floor examination. It looks clean.’”可知,August用幽默的方式化解了被绊倒的尴尬,展现了他的智慧。故选D。

Friendship is like the breeze (微风),
You can’t hold it,
Smell it,
Taste it,
Or know when it’s coming.
But you can always feel it,
And you’ll always know it’s there.
It may come and then go.
But you can know it’ll always be back.
If you turn and walk away,
A true friend will follow you,
If you lose your way,
A true friend will help you and make you happy.
A true friend will hold your hand and tell you that everything is going to be okay.
And if you find such a friend, you must feel pretty happy.
Hold on to me,
Hold on to me, my friend.
Let me comfort you when you get hurt.
Hold on to me, my friend.
Let me love you when you hate yourself.
Hold on to me, my friend.
Let me help you through your trials (考验).
