Unit 5 Off to space-Section 1 Experiencing and understanding language-Listening
This listening section of Unit 5 "Off to space" in Shanghai Education Press (2024) English textbook for Grade 7 focuses on the topic of space hotels. It aims to expose students to vocabulary and expressions related to space travel and hotel facilities in space. Through listening to a robot's introduction about the Starlight Hotel in space, students will learn about various facilities in the hotel, such as the cinema, garden, shops, Space Room, Sports Room, Lab, and Star Restaurant. The content not only enriches students' knowledge about space travel but also improves their listening skills, including predicting, catching key information, and understanding detailed descriptions.
教学目标
Students will be able to master key vocabulary related to space hotels, such as "cinema", "garden", "shops", "Space Room", "Sports Room", "Lab", "restaurant", etc.
They can understand and use expressions like "be going to", "from... to..." to describe activities and opening hours in the context of a space hotel.
教学重难点
1. Key Points
Help students accurately identify and understand the key information about space hotel facilities in the listening material, such as the names, functions, and opening hours of different facilities.
Guide students to master and use relevant vocabulary and expressions related to space hotels.
2. Difficult Points
Enable students to understand longer and more complex sentences in the listening material, especially those with multiple pieces of information.
Encourage students to think independently and express their unique views on space hotels and space travel based on the listening content.
1. Vocabulary
Space hotel facilities: cinema (a place to watch movies), garden (a place with plants, and in the text, it also grows food for the restaurant), shops (where people can buy things like Moon rocks and space T - shirts), Space Room (a place to watch stars and see the Earth), Sports Room (equipped with exercise machines and games), Lab (for doing experiments), Star Restaurant (a place to have meals)
Time expressions: from... to... (e.g., The garden is open from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.), at... o'clock (e.g., Tomorrow, the cinema is going to show the exciting film, Space Adventure at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.)
2. Grammar
The simple future tense "be going to" is used to describe future plans or arrangements in the listening material, such as "Tomorrow, the cinema is going to show the exciting film, Space Adventure at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m."
教学过程
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students and show them some pictures of the Earth, the Moon, and spaceships. Then ask them some questions: "Do you want to travel to space? What do you think space travel will be like? What facilities do you think are needed for a space trip?" Encourage students to share their ideas in pairs.
After that, invite several pairs to share their thoughts with the whole class. This activity can arouse students' interest in the topic of space travel and activate their prior knowledge.
2. Pre - listening (10 minutes)
Present the title "Listening - A robot is talking about the Starlight Hotel" to the students. Let them predict what they might hear in the listening material. Guide them to think about questions like "What facilities might a space hotel have? What activities can people do there?"
Divide the students into pairs and ask them to discuss these questions. Provide them with some key words on the blackboard to help their discussion, such as "sleep", "eat", "play", "watch", etc.
After the discussion, ask some pairs to report their predictions. Write down their ideas on the blackboard. This step helps students predict the listening content and prepares them for the upcoming listening task.
3. While - listening (15 minutes)
First listening: Play the recording of the robot's introduction about the Starlight Hotel for the first time. Ask students to listen carefully and circle the facilities that are mentioned in the listening material from the list on their worksheets. The list may include some facilities they predicted and some distractors. After listening, check the answers with the whole class.
Second listening: Play the recording again. This time, ask students to take notes about the functions and opening hours of each facility. Design some simple forms on the worksheets for students to fill in.
After listening, ask students to complete the forms in pairs. Then check the answers and explain any difficult points. This step helps students catch specific information in the listening material.
4. Post - listening (10 minutes)
Group discussion: Divide the students into groups of four. Ask them to discuss the following questions: "Is this hotel attractive enough for you? Which part of the Starlight Hotel would you like to visit? Why? Besides the above - mentioned parts, what other parts would you like to add to the hotel? What requirements will be set for guests travelling into space? How much would a room in this hotel cost?"
Each group selects a representative to report their discussion results to the whole class. Encourage students to use the vocabulary and expressions they have learned in this listening class.
Role - play: Set up a situation where a travel agent is introducing the Starlight Hotel to a family who wants to go on a space trip. Ask some students to act as travel agents and some as the family members. They can use the information from the listening material and their own creativity to make the role - play more vivid. This activity can help students further understand the content of the listening material and improve their oral communication skills.
5. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary: Summarize the key points of this class with the students, including the vocabulary and expressions related to space hotels, and the listening skills they have practiced.
Homework:
Ask students to write a short passage about their ideal space hotel, including the facilities, activities, and reasons why they design it in this way.
Let students search for more information about space travel or space hotels on the Internet and share it with their classmates in the next class.
教学反思
After teaching this listening class, I need to reflect on the following aspects. Firstly, in the warming - up part, most students were actively involved, but some students seemed a bit shy to share their ideas. In the future, I should create a more relaxed atmosphere and encourage these students to participate. Secondly, during the pre - listening prediction, some students had difficulty thinking of relevant ideas. Maybe I should provide more guiding questions or examples next time. Thirdly, in the while - listening process, some students still had trouble catching all the key information, especially the longer sentences. I need to train them more on how to quickly identify key words in sentences. Finally, in the post - listening discussion and role - play, students showed great enthusiasm, but the time was a bit tight for some groups to fully express their ideas. I should better manage the time in the next class to ensure all students have enough time to practice and express themselves. Overall, through continuous reflection and improvement, I hope to make my teaching more effective and engaging for students.
