Unit 8 Safe and sound-Assessment
Unit 8 "Safe and sound" of Yilin English Textbook for Grade 8 (2024) focuses on the theme of safety. It presents various situations related to safety, such as natural disasters, traffic accidents, and safety in daily life. Through a series of texts, dialogues, and exercises, students will learn relevant vocabulary, sentence patterns, and grammar knowledge. The unit aims to enhance students' awareness of safety and their ability to describe safety issues and give advice in English.
教学目标
Students will be able to master the key vocabulary related to safety, such as "crash", "safe", "earthquake", "storm", etc.
Students will learn important sentence patterns for expressing safety concerns and giving advice, like "What should we do if...?", "It's important to...".
Students will understand and be able to use the grammar points presented in this unit, such as the usage of modal verbs for giving suggestions and advice.
教学重难点
1. Key Points
The key vocabulary and sentence patterns related to safety.
The usage of modal verbs for giving suggestions and advice.
How to guide students to understand and summarize the main idea of reading materials about safety.
2. Difficult Points
Helping students use the learned vocabulary and sentence patterns flexibly in real - life communication.
Teaching students how to analyze the text structure of complex reading materials and improve their reading comprehension ability.
Training students to write logical and coherent passages about safety topics.
1. Vocabulary
Natural disasters: earthquake, flood, storm, typhoon, drought
Safety - related actions: crash, protect, escape, warn, stay calm
Adjectives: safe, dangerous, careful, careless
2. Sentence Patterns
What should we do if there is an earthquake?
It's important to stay calm in an emergency.
We should/ought to/had better... (give advice)
3. Grammar
Modal verbs: should, ought to, had better. Their usage for giving suggestions and advice. For example, "You should wear a helmet when riding a bike." "Ought to we call the police now?" "You had better not go out alone at night."
教学过程
1. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Show some pictures of different safety incidents, such as a car crash, a house flooded in a flood, or people escaping during an earthquake.
Ask students: "What can you see in these pictures? Do you know what causes these situations? And more importantly, how can we keep safe in such situations?" Let students discuss in pairs for about 2 minutes and then invite some pairs to share their ideas.
2. Vocabulary Presentation (8 minutes)
Write the new words on the blackboard one by one. For each word, explain its meaning, pronunciation, and usage. For example, when teaching "crash", say: "Crash means to hit something hard, usually with a lot of force and noise. For example, a car crashed into a tree yesterday. The pronunciation is /kræʃ/."
Use some simple sentences to help students understand the words better. For "safe", say: "We all want to be safe. It's safe to stay at home during a typhoon."
After presenting all the words, ask students to read the words aloud several times to practice the pronunciation.
3. Reading Comprehension (15 minutes)
Hand out a short passage about safety in daily life to the students. Let them read the passage quickly for the first time and find out the main idea.
Then, ask students to read the passage carefully again and answer some detailed questions on the PPT, such as "What are the three most important safety rules mentioned in the passage?" "Why is it dangerous to play with fire?"
After students finish answering the questions, check the answers together. Analyze the text structure with the students, point out the topic sentence of each paragraph, and how the supporting details are organized.
Divide students into groups of four. Let each group discuss and summarize the key safety points from the passage and present them to the class.
4. Grammar Explanation (8 minutes)
Present the grammar points - modal verbs for giving suggestions and advice on the PPT. Explain the differences in meaning and usage among "should", "ought to", and "had better".
Give some examples: "You should study hard for the coming exam." "Ought to we help the old man cross the road?" "You had better take an umbrella as it may rain."
Let students do some grammar exercises on the worksheet. The exercises can include filling in the blanks with the correct modal verbs, making sentences with the given words using modal verbs, etc.
Check the answers with the students and explain the mistakes they made.
5. Speaking Practice (7 minutes)
Set up a situation: Suppose there is a big storm coming. Divide students into pairs. One student acts as a parent and the other acts as a child. The parent needs to give the child some advice on how to keep safe during the storm using the learned vocabulary, sentence patterns, and modal verbs.
Walk around the classroom to monitor the pairs' conversations. After about 3 minutes, invite some pairs to come to the front of the class and act out their conversations.
Give positive feedback to the pairs, praise their good performance, and also point out some areas for improvement.
6. Summary and Homework Assignment (2 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this class, including the new vocabulary, sentence patterns, and grammar knowledge.
Assign homework: Ask students to write a short passage about "How to Keep Safe at School". They should use at least five new words and three sentence patterns learned in this class.
教学反思
After this class, I think the following aspects have been achieved well. The lead - in part successfully attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in the topic of safety. The vocabulary presentation and grammar explanation were relatively clear, and most students seemed to understand. The group work and pair work in the reading and speaking parts provided students with opportunities to communicate and cooperate, which is beneficial for their language learning.
However, there are also some areas that need improvement. In the reading comprehension part, some students still had difficulty in understanding long and complex sentences. Maybe I should spend more time teaching reading skills, such as how to analyze sentence structures. During the speaking practice, some students were a bit shy and didn't actively participate. In the future, I need to create a more relaxed and encouraging atmosphere to make every student willing to open their mouths and speak English. Also, when checking the grammar exercises, I found that some students made the same mistakes repeatedly. I should design more targeted follow - up exercises to help them master the grammar points better.
