One evening, it was raining heavily. An old lady was sitting inside her car, stuck in the middle of the road. It was clear that she badly needed help. A poorly dressed man approached her car but hesitated to speak.
The lady rolled down her window. She looked worried. She tried to smile as the man approached.
“Hello ma’am, can I help you?” the man said. The lady looked puzzled and said, “Yes.” “Please wait inside your car and let me see if I can solve the problem. By the way, I’m Thomas Anderson,” the man named Thomas said. He discovered that she had a flat tire and soon fixed the problem.
“I really don’t have enough words to thank you. How much should I pay you?” she asked, ready to reward him for his kindness. Thomas was surprised. He had never expected any reward from her, though his family would badly need money once their baby was born next month.
“That’s so nice of you, ma’am,” he said. “But if you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, please think of me and help that person. I hope this chain of love will not end with you.” He smiled and went away before the lady could say anything more.
The lady was touched. Anyone who saw the ragged man would think that he needed help, even though he was the one who was helping others.
As the lady went on her way, she found a small cafe down the road. She decided to have a cup of hot coffee. As she went inside, a waitress came up to her with a very clean towel so that she could dry her wet hair. The lady observed that the waitress was heavily pregnant (怀孕的) . She looked tired, but she tried not to show it.

While drinking her coffee, the old lady thought of Thomas and what he had said. She then knew what to do. She determined to continue the chain of love by assisting the pregnant waitress. No sooner had she finished her coffee than she paid with one-hundred-dollar bill and left silently. When the waitress came back with the change, the lady was gone. The waitress looked for her outside the cafe, but the lady and her car were out of sight. Puzzled and shocked, she came back. Ready to clean the table, she found a note written on the napkin, which read, “Someone helped me out just the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, please pass on the kindness and don’t let this chain of love end with you.”(回扣)
The waitress found $500 beneath the napkin. So touched was she that she failed to utter a single word, tears blurring her eyes. She wondered how the lady knew how much this money meant to her, with her baby to be born next month. There were tables to clear and people to serve, but the pregnant waitress felt a wave of warmth.(呼应原文) That night when she got home and had dinner with her husband, both of them shared their stories with the lady. Not until then did they realize that it was Thomas’ kindness that was rewarded in a special way
Twelve Days of Kindness
Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.
“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota.I really miss them and my friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter,Rachel.
“I know, Rachel. So would I.” I said, “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don't you remember how hard it was to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to -30°C on our way back?”
“I remember," she said and ducked her head disappointedly.
We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.
We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren't expecting anyone. Hesitantly, Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom.there's a big box on the doorstep and nobody is out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody in sight.
They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas paper. Each had a type written note: Open Dec.14, Open Dec.15…There were a total of twelve-the “Twelve Days of Christmas." The note read: Our LOVE is given anonymously(匿名地), so enjoy fun with your family, but don't tell anyone please.

After that, we opened one more gift each day. Before uncovering the box, we would sit around the table expectantly and made wild guesses at what each package contained. Then came the exciting moment when the mystery would be revealed. Everybody would roar with laughter. As each package was unwrapped, we realized it was an unknown Canadian friend who was thinking of us, loving us, and wishing us a wonderful Christmas. Amazement never ceased(停止) and the gift opening eventually became a part of our daily routine. We all looked forward to the arrival of Christmas.(衔接)

Scott Legried was a 50-year-old farmer in Frost, Minnesota. One October morning, he was driving his truck along the country road when a dog popped up out of nowhere. It was too late to hit the brake. Scott had no choice but to turn the wheel sharply to the right to avoid running over the dog.
The dog had a lucky narrow escape, but Scott’s car crashed into the roadside cornfield. He got knocked out and when he came to, he found he was unable to move or even reach for his cellphone lying not far away. Scott was desperate for help.
Fortunately, a motorist driving through the area found Scott and called 911. Scott was rushed to hospital. Without delay, the doctors gave Scott a thorough examination and found that he suffered multiple serious injuries and needed to be operated on immediately. After a 5-hour operation, Scott was wheeled to his ward, where the doctors told Scott’s wife Susan that it would take several months for Scott to recover before he could do farm work again.
It was really bad news. This was the busiest time of year for the farmers of the region. What the doctors said meant Scott would not be able to bring in their October harvest of soybeans and corn in time, which would probably be ruined in the fields. The crops were their hard work of so many days! They meant the world to the family. Besides, wheat should be sown after the soybeans and corn were harvested. They couldn’t afford to miss the farm time, but they could do nothing at all since Susan also had to stay in the hospital to accompany and take care of Scott. Feeling extremely anxious and helpless, the couple could hardly fall asleep on the first night in the hospital.
The bad news that Scott had a serious accident spread quickly. The whole community were deeply concerned about him. Frank, director of the community, and some other farmers came to the hospital to see Scott the next day.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan.Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

Under the father’s instruction, they first cleaned up the mess, and then they respectively took responsibility for French toast and chicken porridge.(呼应原文) With the experience of failure, they accomplished their task perfectly this time. Behind the children stood their father, who told her the whole story. After learning about what happened, she wore a broad smile and her shining smile lit up the room. “Thank you, my honey,” said the mother, “That's the best gift I've ever had.” Mother hugged them tightly, with tears rolling down her cheeks. After that, the father recorded the memorable scene with camera. What a Mother’s Day Surprise!
Price of a Miracle
Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money. Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.
“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “47 cents!” , Tess replied without any hesitation. "Well, what a coincidence!" smiled the man. "—it’s the exact price of a miracle for your little brother." Filled with excitement, Tess grasped his hand, leading him to her home. With doubt and hope, Dad and Mom had Andrew checked by the man, who declared that he would perform an operation on the boy and promised it wouldn’t be long before he could recover himself. Hearing his words, the whole family burst into tears of joy.
The operation was completed. It turned out to be a great success. It wasn't long before Andrew was sent back home safe and sound(平平安安的/安然无恙的). Tears of relief and gratitude blurred their vision, and Tess’s parents inquired the charge of operation carefully since they knew that 47 cents was obviously a white lie for an operation. What surprised them was that the man said Tess had paid for it. “It’s a fair deal,” the doctor explained and looked into Tess’s eyes, smiling, “47 cents was what the miracle cost—plus the faith and love of a little girl.”

In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.
"Here we are!" We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?
Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. "Your mum told me there hasn't been much shut eye recently for any of you." "Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装)."I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).
"I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much." "But you and Mum seem so close,"I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.
"Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know." She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.
Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I'd sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa's baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

Suddenly I saw two familiar figures walking towards me.“Mum and Dad?”I exclaimed in disbelief. “Surprise sweetie,” they responded joyfully,“a perfect day for a picnic! We bring your favorite.”I suspected they had planned all this. So thrilled and moved was I that I rushed towards them and embraced them tightly. Then, dad spread the picnic blanket they brought, beside which Mum put down the baby basket. We sat down and enjoyed the food, every mouthful perfect. Suddenly Dad placed a flower chain on my head and declared,“I crown you,Queen of Yawns.”Hearing the words, we all burst into laughter. Our shared laughter echoed around the field with a ray of breeze and a wave of sweet flowers surrounding us. Abruptly, a small sound from the baby basket interrupted me. I tiptoed to it and peered(仔细看)in.
Rosa was wide awake in her baby basket beside the picnic blanket. Her eyes, as clear as the spring sky, glanced around the surroundings with curiosity. Staring at her delicate cheeks, rosy lips and soft hair, I found myself reaching out to the little angel. What amazed me was that she grabbed my little finger with a bright smile. A rush of affection sweeping over me, I gently lifted her up from the basket and presented her a yellow flower. I recalled how my aunt showed her affection and concern for my mom. Not until then did I realize that just like the flowers in the field, the bond between Rosa and me would take time to blossom.【升华】

Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye—a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp. “Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you take it to the limit at Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road? We can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot, asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full, just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the corner. Morty saw the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business. Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

Morty’s father frowned at the sip of the lemonade. As to him, it tasted more like water. Overwhelmed with confusion, he asked directly,“What’s wrong? It tastes just like cold water.” No sooner had Morty heard his father’s doubt than the color flooded his cheeks. Embarrassed and ashamed, Morty, Fred as well as Ben were unable to utter any words, standing there as if rooted to the ground. A moment later, they admitted what they had done. Disappointed as(尽管)Morty’s father was , he just responded with patience and comfort,“You still have time to correct your wrongdoings.”Hearing this, they nodded immediately.
They decided to fix their wrongdoings the next week. Ben suggested using the money that they earned before to prepare enough lemons first and then reducing the price. Hardly had the proposal been put forward when they reached an agreement. When they restarted their business, they even stood a sign, saying,“We send a cup of lemonade to customers who bought it last Saturday afternoon for free.” They made over 50 cups of lemonade for a constant stream of customers with a low price and over 20 cups were for free. As you can imagine, they didn’t get enough money for the camp.【结局交代】 But it’s through the experience that they learned a valuable lesson that one should always be honest.【升华——强调诚信的重要性】

I sat in my parents’ car. Mom had insisted I go with her to pick up Dad from work. Across from Dad’s office is a bike store. That was the day my eleven-year-old eyes first saw the purple BMX Mongoose bike. From that day on, all I could think about was that bike. I even drew pictures of the bike in class. Every evening afterward, at five thirty, I eagerly went along with Mom to get Dad.
And every day I told my parents, “I want that bike!” But they disagreed and replied that I had already had a perfectly good bike at home. I’d argue it was old and ugly, thinking that my happiness depended on that purple bike. Days later, I found the store had sold that bike. I knew I’d never be happy again.
A week later, returning home from school, I tripped over something. Lying in the weeds near a river and some wooded lots(树林地), was a bike — the exact bike from the store. “Hey, whose bike is this?” I shouted, scanning the area. No one replied, and there was no one in sight. Maybe its owner didn’t want it any longer. I couldn’t leave it lying in the weeds. So I took it home and hid it behind the garage. Every day after school, I sat there, admiring it. But I didn’t feel like riding and didn’t feel as happy as I had thought. Thinking about the bike made my stomach tighten and uncomfortable.
A few days later, during lunch at school, my friend said, “Did you hear about Tyler, in the other fifth-grade class? He lost his new purple BMX Mongoose bike he had just gotten for his birthday. He left it by a river while playing in the woods. It got dark, and he couldn’t find it.”
“I’d never go off and leave a new bike like that. He doesn’t deserve to have that bike,” I replied. My friend added, “Kids say he’s nice. And they say Tyler is upset because his dad worked overtime to buy the bike for him.” For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tyler.

After school,I returned home and dragged to my room. A wave of guilt struck me. I threw myself on the bed and buried my face in the pillow(枕头), with tears of regret rolling down my cheeks. As my friend's words crowded into my mind, I felt my stomach tightened from the shame. Staring at the my drawing of the bike, I gradually realized that I needed to fix it and made up my mind to tell the truth and return the bike. However, not knowing where he lived, I gathered all my courage and turn to mom for assistance, telling her everything with uneasiness. To my surprise, instead of scolding and blaming me, mom just nodded approvingly and patted me gently on the head.
"I know Tyler's house,"Mom said."I'll drive you there." Carrying the bike, we headed for his house. So nervous was I that my throat tightened and my palms kept sweating. When we finally arrived, hesitant as I was, I clenched(紧握) my fists and knocked at the door. Seeing Tyler coming out with his face lit up by the bike, I immediately explained in a weak voice and made a sincere apology. Surprisingly, instead of getting mad at me, he forgave me with a broad smile, hugging me softly and even offering to lend me his bike. A wave of relief welling up in my heart on the way home. I came to realize that to live a life of honesty and integrity is a responsibility of each individual.
3 Learn to Be Brave
As the mother of an eleven-year-old girl, I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful, elegant, confident, and rich. However, I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said than done.
I still remember I couldn’t see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was broadcasting a show about snakes. I stood as far away from the TV as possible, too scared to open my eyes. However, my little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest. I was relieved that my daughter didn’t get too many genetic phobias(遗传恐惧症). Even to this day, she is still obsessed with challenging herself with new things.
This year, I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone, I found myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching, my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.
The reunion day finally came. My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July. I was so looking forward to seeing them. I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day, I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay. When we walked out of the MRT station, we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people walking on the Skyway, she couldn’t help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try. The Skyway is a 22-meter-high suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a bird’s eye view. Last time I came here with my friends, I firmly rejected their repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my little angel?

My daughter was waiting for my reply. I looked at her whose eyes were sparkling with expectation, then at the Skyway. So nervous was I that my mind went blank. My husband, who knew my genetic phobias and understood how scared I was, comforted me. He said he could go with our little girl instead. But my daughter wouldn’t give up easily and shouted out her own encouragement. Finally, I nodded and made up my mind to give it a shot. I gathered up my courage to take the first step onto the suspension bridge, then another. I moved forward inch by inch, holding on tight to the handrail all the way.
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. I stood there with my legs trembling fiercely despite my attempt to stay calm. No sooner had I caught sight of the scene below the bridge than I was overwhelmed by endless panic. It’s at that moment that I heard a familiar voice, “Mom, I’m convinced that you can do it!” and two little hands slipped into my arm. Looking down, I saw my little angel’s bright smile, which endowed me with the bravery to finish the walk. Eventually, we made it to the end together. My husband was surprised at my courage, but I knew the reason why I had overcome the challenge was my little girl, who let me learn to be brave.【点题】
4 An awkward experience
I was walking along the road to school one day and I met my friend Raine. He suggested that we skip school and go to the movies. I refused because my dad was very strict and I knew he would be mad. Raine offered various reasons but I still refused. Finally, he said there was a Will Smith movie at the local cinema and that I couldn't afford to miss it. Finally curiosity got the better of me and I agreed to go.
So we set off to the movies together, bought our tickets, popcorn and drinks and settled down comfortably. The movie was due to start in fifteen minutes and the lights were still on. We watched people coming in groups, families and there were couples too. Some of them looked like school students cutting classes like us. As I turned around, I suddenly caught sight of my uncle Andy and aunt Jane walking in. I sank into my seat quickly to avoid being spotted. I signaled to Raine that there was someone I didn't want to see. But Raine made it more obvious by turning around and asking "Who? And where?" loudly, which made me sit even lower in my seat.
To make things worse, they came and sat just in the row behind us. I couldn't help but overhear(偷听) their conversation. They were discussing how much I would have loved to come to this movie, knowing my admiration for Will Smith. They were even commenting about the students cutting classes. They spoke in a low voice, but their words were loud enough for me to catch. They discussed the bad influence of cutting classes and the importance of studying hard at school. My heart sank with these words. It was as if they were unknowingly lecturing me, reminding me why I shouldn't have given in to Raine's suggestion.

第4组 历险脱困
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase (追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

The car abruptly stopped in front of him. People inside hurriedly opened the door and shouted, “Get in!” So thrilled was Mac that he jumped off his bicycle without hesitation, rushed to the back door of the car, and eventually dived into the safe shelter. No sooner had Mac shut the door than the violent animal caught up with them, knocking at the car fiercely and glaring at them with anger. It’s then that they realized that they should go away as soon as possible. Paul started the car immediately, leaving the wolf behind, which made all of them sigh with relief. Later, they pulled over to wait for Mac’s friends.
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. Mac came out from the car with two legs trembling wildly. “What happened, Mac? We saw your bike on the road.” asked the other bicyclists who were more than confused. “ Can you believe? I was attacked by a wolf and it’s Paul and Becky that saved my life.” Mac hugged them tightly and burst into tears. Having known everything, they expressed their sincere gratitude to Paul and Becky. Then they said farewell to each other. Mac and his partners restarted his journey with pleasant breeze. What an unforgettable experience !

Tom Young was on his way home from a hard day’s work at a construction site, carrying his worn-out hammer(锤 子)which had accompanied him through thick and thin. With each step, his mind was filled with worry as he racked his brain to find money for his seriously ill son, Andrew, who was in great need of heart surgery.
Tom had run out of choices and time. Desperation was beginning to set in, but he refused to let his son suffer helplessly. As he walked, the weight of his troubles pressed heavily on his shoulders. So desperate was he that he even heard a hum in his ears. The next moment the hum was entirely covered by a loud sound.
He turned in shock, and what he saw took his breath away. An expensive luxury car was wrapped around a big tree on the other side of the street, with its front twisted and flames starting to spring up from the car.
Without a second thought, he ran to the flaming car. He noticed that although the young lady in the driver's seat did not seem to have been severely injured—apparently because of the open airbag-she was unconscious. Tom saw that the flames began to grow increasingly intense. He realized that he had to get the girl out of the car immediately because there was a high risk of the vehicle exploding at any time.
He grabbed the handle and pulled it, but the door was bent and did not open. He used all his strength and tried again, but in vain. It was a sports car, so it had only two doors, and the other one was blocked by the tree. He decided that he had to break the glass to take her out as quickly as possible. He struck it forcefully with his fist but realized that there was no way he could break the thick glass with bare hands, and the flames were getting bigger.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom. “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp" and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place. she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom! "she cried. "Help!"
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落)somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy,she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now. Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

It was daybreak when Jane woke up. Weak as she was, she struggled to her feet, continuing searching for assistance. To her great joy, a helicopter was flying overhead again and again. Eager and excited, she waved her yellow blouse wildly and spared no effort to yell so as to attract their attention. Fortunately, she was eventually noticed and brought into the helicopter where she saw her husband, a man staring at her, wearing an expression of relief. She hugged him as tightly as possible and was too thrilled to say anything. Since then, they have promised never to quarrel again, determining to live the life to the fullest.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. They often found plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse still, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to solve such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea flashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

Peter added(补充说). The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and appealing to(呼吁) people to participate in the clean-up. Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that plenty of people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to be involved in their clean-up. Since then, more and more people have come to the beach to pick up plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure——swimming in the waters(回扣原文). It’s our joint efforts that can make a great difference(主旨升华).

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I patted him to get his attention. “Why do you give up the run, David?” I whispered to him. After a short silence, he murmured with his head down and sorrow written on his face, “I will be a loser, and others will laugh at me”. Knowing his fear and worry, I hugged him tightly, uttering softly, “You are a determined boy, and I’m convinced that you can face the challenge bravely. More importantly, it is participation rather than the result that really matters.” Inspired by what I said, David eventually nodded and agreed to run. Then the running was about to begin.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. When the race began, David spared no effort to move ahead. But David, who had a brain disease, was still not quick enough and left behind by others. A flood of anxiety struck me, so I shouted crazily in the crowd “Come on, David!”. Sweaty and exhausted as he was, he kept running. After what seemed years, David struggled to cross the finishing line. The crowd burst into wild cheers and thunderous applause. He embraced me with tears streaming down his face. I am, once again, proud of his strong determination. Where there is a will, there is a way.
2 Friend or foe?
Last year, at a day camp, my friend Ollie and I were on the same obstacle-course (障碍赛) team and had a great time. This year, Scotty, the captain of Team Panda, insisted we pick sticks to decide which team we belonged to.
At the beginning, we just wished we’d be on the same team again. But to our disappointment, Ollie had picked a short stick for Team Grizzly, while I had a long stick for Team Panda. My heart sank as something was definitely going to be different.
We all played a name game together, and then were divided into two groups to make team flags. “Could you please pass that paint?” asked a boy named Ben. “We’re going to destroy the Grizzlies! Right, Arizona?”
“But Ollie, my best friend, is in Grizzly. How come I destroy him?” I asked myself shyly.
Then at lunchtime, I planned to sit with Ollie at the same table as last year, cracking each other up the way good friends do. “What are you doing? Having lunch with our enemy is not OK!!!” claimed a girl in my team. Only then did I realize there was an invisible dividing line. All of the Grizzlies sat together, and all of the Pandas sat together. I had no other alternative but to say goodbye to Ollie and concentrate on my lunch.
That night I hardly fell asleep. Ben’s voice was saying “Destroy the Grizzlies!” repeatedly. I was wondering if being a good team member meant I was supposed to put my friendship with Ollie aside. One of my best friends was a Grizzly, and it just didn’t seem fun to treat him as an enemy.
I woke up with zero energy for our first competition the next morning. We each had two tries to race through an obstacle course. My first try was a disaster! I did OK with the monkey bars, the tunnel, and the slide. But when I did the rope swing over the sandpit(沙坑), I went too slow and got stuck in the middle. I felt pretty frustrated.

Then he tapped my shoulder gently and uttered in an encouraging voice, “It doesn’t matter, my best friend!(点题)You made it last year. I’m convinced that you can make your second run a good one.”, which astonished me greatly. My “enemy” (点题)was inspiring me!I raised my head and stared into his eyes with confusion. These simple words, spoken from the heart, found their way straight into mine. It struck me that being on the competing team shouldn’t get in the way of our friendship. I determined to try my best for my second time.(衔接)
On my second time through the obstacle course, Ollie stood up for me. I took a deep breath and was ready to run. With the cheers of Ollie and my teammates, I ended up with the fastest time on my team. And what shocked me most was that Ollie also got the fastest time on his team. The entire Panda VS Grizzly match ended in a tie.(结局交代) From then on, I decided not to take the “enemy” comments too seriously. It’s possible to do your best for your team and to remain friends with someone on the other team. (大道理升华)

George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I’ll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today’s championship game marked its 50th anniversary ( 周年) since the league’s first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. “Look!” he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure.“You see who has the all-time record? My dad! He never told me that.”
“24 points,” David said. “That’s awesome!”
George’s best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers ’ top scorer. “It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,”George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. “I didn’t miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,”he said with regret. George hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost the game just by one point.“That was a great group of teammates,”his dad added.“You have great teammates in the Badgers, too.”
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father’s words. “This will be a struggle every second,”the coach emphasized before they got on court to play.“I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team.”
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father’s scoring record.

However, his team was now one point behind the Lions. With the ball in his possession, the pressure mounted in George as the final seconds ticked away on the game clock. The Lions were striving to defend by surrounding George. Every second was a struggle. He knew he had to make the right decision. Should he shoot for the record, or pass the ball to set up a winning play? Suddenly, the teammates, whose faces were filled with tension and determination, came into his view. Recalling his dad’s words—“You have great teammates in the Badgers”, George made his choice. 【转折点】He passed the ball to David, who was in a perfect position for a three-pointer.【衔接】
With no defenders around, David turned and shot at the basket. The ball sailed through the air, tracing a beautiful curve before eventually dropping into the basket. They made it! The gym burst into cheers as the referee blew the whistle, signaling the end of the game. George's heart raced as he realized what had just happened. With that shot, his team secured the victory, but personally, he failed to achieve his goal of breaking his father's scoring record. 【结局】However, when he glanced at his father's approving gaze from the sidelines, a profound sense of accomplishment swept over him. Not until then did he understand that while individual achievements are noteworthy, the true essence of victory lies in “playing as a team”.【升华】

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.

“Go home and ask your mummy about your blind brother! I am surprised you didn’t know that he is as blind as a bat!” Hearing Nathan’s words, I wanted to land a blow on him for making fun of my two-year-old brother, David, but I was more desperate to find out the truth.
With a misty vision, I ran home as fast as I could. Still out of breath, I questioned, “Is David blind?” Mother turned to me with tears in her eyes. “Yes, he’s born blind.” It was a heartbreaking moment. I knew clearly the dream of showing David my cool soccer moves or playing video games with him ended cruelly. “Why did you keep the truth from me? I often wondered why he didn’t look at me or why he was always tripping over things and I thought it was because he was still too young…” Before I could continue any further, Mother hugged me and cried, “I’m sorry, Caleb. Dad and I just didn’t know how to tell you.”
Suddenly, it struck me that David was blind but he could still hear the whole conversation. Not wanting him to be affected by it, I stopped crying and went forward and embraced him. “I love you so much, David.” Worry crept up on me: How hard life would be for him!
Little did I know that David was to inspire me so greatly.
As David grew up, he was fairly strong-willed. Despite the challenges that he faced, he continued to attend the school for visually impaired children. He insisted he take the bus home on his own. Often, he would walk through the main door looking sheepish and saying the same phrase, “Sorry mum, I am late. I boarded the wrong bus again.”
Tough as life was, there was always a silver lining of misfortune. Despite not being able to see, he could play a piece of music after listening to it being played once on the piano. He even dreamed of playing solo (独奏) one day onstage. Luckily for him, the school had discovered David’s extraordinary talent.

Alexander sang all the time. He sang in the shower, he sang while he did his homework, and he sang while he walked to school. He simply loved singing. One day during a break, he heard Kevin talking about the tryouts(选拔)for the City Choir(合唱团).
“Yeah, I’m attending the tryouts this weekend,” Kevin announced. “With my voice, I’m pretty much guaranteed a spot. I don’t even need any practice as I am so talented. Imagine they’ll want me to perform lots of solos(独唱),too.”
Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice. Normally, Alexander just ignored him, but he couldn’t help imagining himself as a member of the choir. Wouldn’t it be fun, he thought, to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing?
On the tryout day, Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn’t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be? He has performed as a soloist many times. Alexander, on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience.
After a while, the choir director, Mr.Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions. Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage, he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin’s turn came. As Kevin³s confident voice filled the room Alexander realized that he would never sound that good.
Next, Mr. Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together. Kevin’s group sang right before Alexander’s, and even with four other boys singing, Kevin’s voice clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

The most important life lesson I have ever learned was in my first year in middle school. I was 12 years old at the time and life was going great, I had tons of friends and I felt like nothing could bring me down. However, that all changed when I met Julian. I sat next to Julian in my English class. He wasn't quiet by any means, but for some reason, he went out of his way not to talk to me. I couldn't understand what his problem was, but I just ignored it and focused on school. I had plenty of friends, so why did I need to worry about the person who didn't seem to like me?
As the weeks went by, I began to notice something unsettling. Julian always seemed to be staring at my mouth. Even when I was talking to others, he was staring. After a few days, it really started to disturb me. So the next day, I decided to talk to him about it
.As my mom was dropping me off the next morning, I noticed Julian getting out of his car behind us. He seemed normal except that he was making a hand gesture to his mom, who then did the same gesture back, I watched as he ran into school and I ran in after him, feeling more confused than ever. “Hey, Julian,” I called out to him but he didn’t turn around, so I figured he was just ignoring me again. This time, however, I ran up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and smiled at me. I was really confused. How could someone who so obviously ignored me a few moments ago but now act as if nothing was wrong? “Why do you keep staring at my mouth all the time?” I asked him directly.

【例文】
To my great surprise, Julian explained to me that he was partially deaf. No sooner had I heard his explanation than the confusion accumulated in my heart disappeared. The reason why he had been constantly staring at my mouth was that he couldn’t make my words clear just by listening. Recalling all the misunderstanding, I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of shame and guilt. With sincerity, I apologized to him and promised if he needed help, I would be more than glad to assist. Then he also made an apology for ignoring me, adding“Would you like to be my friend?” Yes!” I nodded immediately with obvious delight written on face.
From that day on, our relationship began to change. In the following English classes,we tended to sit and cooperate together when it came to free discussion and group work.【对比原文一】 As time went by, the bond between us became closer and closer and he became more talkative. Whenever we interacted, instead of feeling disturbed and confused, I was pleased and patient to let him stare at my lips, beyond which, I even made my efforts to speak slowly and clearly so that he could understand what I said easily.【对比原文二】Years flying by, this special friendship became one of the most precious memories in my heart.【结局】 It’s Julian that taught me——even if we misjudged someone, it only took a simple question to remove the misunderstanding and form an unexpected friendship.【强调句升华】
第9组 人与动物
In the hub of a city, sandwiched between skyscrapers and high-rises was a tiny but vibrant animal shelter by the name of “Paws Home”. Serving as a nice haven for numerous homeless animals, it offered food, shelter and care.
One day, young Jack and Grace walked by the shelter and noticed a sign for a voluntary service.
Jack was absorbed immediately, “Grace, just take into consideration those sad animals in urgent need of help. Let’s join to be volunteers.”
Grace, however, showed somewhat uncertainty, “I am not sure, Jack, voluntary service takes hard work, and we have school to go to and something else to do.”
Jack insisted, “just think about what a meaningful difference we would make to the homeless animals. Don’t hesitate! Do it now!” Eventually, Grace nodded.
Both Jack and Grace ran to the animal shelter and sprang into action. Sweeping the shelter, feeding the animals and having games with them were great fun for them. With days passing, they became attached to the lovely creatures and felt a sense of pride.
On one Sunday afternoon full of sunshine, when making nice meals for the lovely, Jack happened to hear a conversation, leaving him worried. The shelter’s director, Mr. Frank, was telling a worker a financial crisis Paws Home was faced with. As donations were declining and running costs were rising, the shelter was on the verge(边缘)of being closed. “The shelter will stop in the near future”, sighed Mr. Frank.
Jack told Grace the news promptly. Surely, both of them felt how urgent it was to find a way out. “We can’t wait doing nothing,” Grace said, resolve shining in her eyes, “we have to take action again.”
They immediately put forward a good plan: stage a community fundraising called “An Evening for Paws”— animals talent show, bake sale and auction(拍卖) on the square.
The weeks that followed saw how busy they were. Jack persuaded some local shops to donate pet supplies, baked goods, and art works for the auction. At the same time, Grace promoted the event online, attracting attention fast. She designed posters which would appear in the neighborhood .

Mia and Leo were constantly occupied in greeting guests, answering questions and ensuring everything was going smoothly. They could feel that their efforts paid off as they saw the enthusiasm of the people.
Overexcited, Mr.Frank, couldn’t be more grateful to everyone. First, he looked at Jack and Grace affectionately and said proudly “well done!” On hearing it, both Jack and Grace were smiling knowingly. Then, Mr.Frank extended the sincere gratitude to the enthusiastic crowd. I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be its guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an air letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As it was cattle dog, my father thought it would be shot or trapped, because of its appearance. But Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the countryside of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.

Suddenly there was a sound in the bush.
Once home we had the task of getting all the prickles (刺) off the poor dog.
【例文】
Suddenly there was a sound in the bush. My father's eyes lighting up, he immediately recognized the familiar bark of Spider.Without hesitation, he rushed towards the noise, calling out Spider's name. What shocked us most was that our beloved cattle dog emerged from the bush, wagging its tail excitedly. The poor dog kept licking my father's face and making choking noises and tears blurred old lady's and my eyes. Slightly tired and injured as it was, Spider had finally found us after all this time. Our joy was beyond description. While patting Spider gently, my father noticed its minor wounds then bent down, pull it in his arms and carried it to the back seat of the car. After expressing our gratitude to the old lady, we drove back home.
Once home we had the task of getting all the prickles off him. We placed it into its comfortable doghouse that my father had prepared for it as soon as we came back here. Then, we made joint effort to move all the prickles from it one by one carefully, after which we applied some medicine to the wounds. In the process, though it hurt sometimes, Spider patiently endured it, knowing he was eventually reunited with his family. The following days witnessed us cleaning him up and feeding him on a regular basis. It wasn't long before it made a full recovery. Not until then did we realize that Spider had never given up hope of finding us and neither had my father. It was his loyalty and determination as well as my father's insistence and hope that made this reunion possible. From then on, Spider became a reminder of the unbreakable bond that can exist between a man and his dog.
