When I was young, my dad would always play music in the house. I’d dance to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Whenever he played Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, I’d grab my skipping ropes and skip to the beat. I’d request Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata when I was getting ready for bed. Listening to classical music was part of my daily routine. I eventually learned how to play the piano.
After I had my own daughter, I was excited to introduce her to classical music. However, this excitement soon led to disappointment as no matter what piece I chose, she would not listen.
Then one day in October, everything changed. My daughter came home and announced, “I want to dress up as a bumblebee (大黄蜂) for Halloween. Can you make me a costume, Mom?” Of course, I agreed to sew her a bumblebee costume. But at the same time, the bumblebee gave me an idea.
I worked all week on the costume. On Halloween night, my daughter put the costume on and looked in the mirror. Her eyes lit up.
She began making buzzing noises — and I was ready. “Can you fly like a bumblebee?” I asked. As she began to buzz around the room, I quickly started playing Flight of the Bumblebee.
As the fast-paced violin music began, my daughter buzzed around to the music. She never stopped moving.
When the music came to its final bars, my daughter shouted, “Play it again, Mom!” So I played it again.
Since that night, classical music has become more prevalent in our household. Eventually, she learned how to play the violin and guitar.
I still have that costume stored away in a special box. I hope to pass it on to my grandchildren one day and see what happens.
24. What does the author intend to show by mentioning the music works in paragraph 1?
A. The impact of classical music on her. B. The different types of classical music.
C. The world-famous classical musicians. D. The lasting popularity of classical music.
25. How did the author attempt to introduce classical music to her daughter?
A. By making a Halloween costume. B. By playing various classical pieces.
C. By teaching her how to play an instrument. D. By telling her stories about famous musicians.
26. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 8 mean?
A. Popular. B. Competitive. C. Challenging. D. Embarrassing.
27. Why does the author keep the bumblebee costume?
A. To prove her sewing skills. B. To wear it to attend musical events.
C. To let it play its magic on her grandchildren. D. To give it to her grandchildren as a Halloween gift.

Dragons, a famous imaginary beast born from fantasy, are often present in stories in the west and east. In both cultures, dragons are generally recognized as massive creatures capable of flight. They have great power and are often associated with magical abilities. However, due to their different cultural roots and images, there exist significant differences in the way dragons are regarded in the west and east, particularly in China.
Chinese dragons most resemble snakes, and have four claws and no wings. They often have features of other animals, including carp, tigers, and eagles. In contrast, Western dragons look like huge lizards with big claws and large bat-like wings, and are often shown with spines or rough scales.
In traditional Chinese culture, a dragon is a symbol of luck, power and high status. They can cause weather changes and bring rainfall to the fields to ensure rich harvests. They are considered divine creatures, which hold an important position as the head of the four spirits. Therefore, to symbolize their power, ancient Chinese emperors decorated their clothes with dragon patterns. These clothes are known as dragon robes. Many Chinese view the dragon as a national symbol, proudly referring to themselves as “descendants of the dragon”. In the west, however, a dragon symbolizes an evil creature that spreads violence and terror throughout the land. They are believed to be transformed by the devil, with the ability to breathe fire or spit poison. Many western tales show dragons being defeated and killed to protect people from danger.
Today, dragons continue to evolve, exceeding traditional boundaries and finding new significance in global culture. They are no longer associated with evil or good, but rather as complex characters with their own unique personalities and motivations. For example, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon begins as a dangerous dragon but evolves into a misunderstood being with love and compassion. This challenges the idea of dragons as naturally evil, presenting them as complex beings with emotions and motivations.
28. What do western dragons and eastern dragons have in common?
A. They have rough skin. B. They are huge and powerful.
C. They are in the shape of snakes. D. They have big claws and wings.
29. What do we know from paragraph 3?
A. Western dragons are a symbol of authority.
B. Dragons in China can protect people from danger.
C Chinese dragons can control rainfall and breathe fire.
D. Dragons are believed to cause chaos in western culture.
30. What is new about dragons in today’s global culture?
A. They are regarded as adventurous creatures.
B. They are closely associated with evil or good.
C. They have more diverse emotions and personalities.
D. They tend to represent human spirits facing challenges.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Dragon Elements in Global Culture
B. The Origin of Dragons in Chinese History
C. The Magical Animals in Different Countries
D. The Images of Dragons in Western Traditions

Forget facial recognition — there could be a new way to identify you. Researchers have discovered that we all seem to have a “respiratory (呼吸的) fingerprint”, a unique way of breathing that could help doctors diagnose and treat many health problems, from obesity to depression. The breakthrough comes from Timna Soroka at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and her colleagues, who have developed a wearable device that records how people breathe.
The idea that breathing patterns contain health information isn’t new — scientists have thought about it since the 1950s. But without a wearable device that could record nasal (鼻子的) breathing data as a person moves around, research was limited to data collected from hospital patients, who tend to have their breathing monitored for less than an hour. To solve this, Soroka and her colleagues created a wearable device and gave it to 97 people who wore it for 24 hours. They then trained an algorithm (算法) to recognize unique breathing patterns, which could help it identify the participants with almost 97 per cent accuracy.
Nevertheless, “don’t expect to have a nasal airflow recording the next time you go to a bank”, says team member Noam Sobel. The goal is not to test people’s identity, but to find useful health information. For instance, a person’s body mass index (BMI) could be predicted by the special breathing pattern, which raises an interesting possibility. Rather than weight gain causing changes in breathing, could breathing patterns influence weight? “If that’s true, we’ll find the breathing pattern that makes you thin,” he says.
The respiratory data also revealed links between aspects of breathing and levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms. For example, people who had high levels of depressive symptoms breathed in faster. The team is now investigating whether breathing patterns actually cause these symptoms, to see whether they can be used to diagnose common mental health conditions, which could then potentially be treated through breathing exercises.
32. What is the main discovery described in paragraph 1?
A. Irregular breathing can cause obesity. B. Breathing can serve as a personal identifier.
C. Facial recognition can contain breathing data. D. Depression directly influences human respiration.
33. Why was the wearable device developed?
A To monitor people’s health conditions. B. To compare different breathing patterns.
C. To collect breathing data during daily activities. D. To limit patients’ movement during data collection.
34. What is the potential application of the research according to paragraph 3?
A. Detecting breathing diseases. B. Improving bank security.
C. Preventing identity theft. D. Managing body weight.
35. What will be the next focus for the research?
A. Training AI to learn breathing patterns. B. Exploring the way to change breathing rates.
C. Diagnosing diseases through breathing patterns. D. Investigating breathing’s effect on mental health.

John and his mother lived in a house far from the city. John loved to wander through the forest nearby. In the center of the forest was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. On his wanderings, John would often see animals such as deer and rabbits as he listened to the birds singing in the trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he decided to become a great artist and present all of these breathtaking scenes to the world.
John studied at the local high school. Life had not been easy for John and his mother since his father had died. His mother knew how important a good education was in life, but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “How will you earn money as an artist?” she would ask. “It’s not a stable job.” But as John got older, his passion for art became stronger.
Due to their circumstances, buying new paint was a luxury that John could simply not afford. He used a worn drawing file and the limited colors he had to practice his craft. However, this lack of materials did not deter (使打消念头) him from his dream. He spent a significant amount of time in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinctive gift for art, he drew more and more beautifully with each passing day.
One day, John learned that there was going to be a drawing competition in town, and that the deadline for submitting entries (参赛作品) was only two days away. This was the perfect opportunity to fulfill his dream and show off his skills, but as he read the rules, he realized that he needed special paints and brushes for the competition. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew she did not approve.
That evening, his mother returned from work and handed him some money, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was more than enough for the materials he desired! John’s face lit up.

C. Chinese dragons can control rainfall and breathe fire.

A. To monitor people’s health conditions.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. D

根据上文“It’s no secret that the Internet is home to some illegal characters(互联网上有一些非法分子,这已经不是什么秘密了)”以及下文“Instead, stay mindful and take a look at these tips for Internet safety(相反,要保持警惕,看看这些网络安全提示)”可知,上文提到互联网上有非法分子,下文则说不要因此而关闭网络,而是要采取安全措施,因此空格处应是一个过渡句,表达不需要关闭网络的意思,与E项“However, staying safe online doesn’t require you to turn your Internet off(然而,保持网络安全并不需要你关闭网络)”表达的含义一致,故选E项。
【37题详解】
根据下文“When it comes to online safety, it goes without saying that you should never share your passwords or banking information(谈到网络安全,不用说,你永远不应该分享你的密码或银行信息)”可知,本段主要讲的是不要分享个人信息,与C项“Don’t share your personal information.(不要分享你的个人信息)”表达的含义一致,且作为本段的主题句,符合语境,故选C项。
【38题详解】
根据上文“Double-check all links before you click. When checking your email or looking through social media, make sure you know and trust any links before you click them(在点击之前仔细检查所有链接。
根据上文“Hackers are known to set up fake Wi-Fi hotspots to attract unsuspecting web surfers in.(众所周知,黑客会设置假Wi-Fi热点来吸引毫无防备的网民)”可知,上文提到黑客会设置假Wi-Fi热点,因此空格处应说明这种假Wi-Fi热点的危害,与G项“Once someone uses this kind of Wi-Fi, the hacker can see basically everything they do online.(一旦有人使用这种Wi-Fi,黑客基本上可以看到他们在网上做的一切)”表达的含义一致,故选G项。
【40题详解】
根据上文“The only downside to the increased security a VPN provides?(VPN提供的更高安全性的唯一缺点是什么?)”以及下文“This is because the VPN routes your information through another server to secure your data(这是因为VPN会将你的信息通过另一台服务器进行路由传输,以此保障数据安全)”可知,上文提到VPN有缺点,下文则解释了这个缺点的原因,因此空格处应说明这个缺点是什么,与B项“It could slow your Internet connection.(它可能会减慢你的网络连接速度)”表达的含义一致,故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: A week later, John received a phone call at home.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Paragraph 1: Early the next morning, John left home with the money. He rushed to a shop and bought the special paints and brushes needed for the competition. Excitement and determination filled his heart as he hurried back to his favorite spot in the forest. With each stroke of his brush, he poured his love for nature onto the canvas, hoping to create a masterpiece that would capture the beauty of the forest. Time slipped by at the tip of his brush. He eventually finished his painting in the afternoon. With a sense of pride and accomplishment, John carefully packed up his supplies and went into town to submit his entry.
Paragraph 2: A week later, John received a phone call at home. The caller informed John that he had won the first prize worth $500 in the drawing competition. Tears of joy streamed down John’s face as he shared the news with his mother. At first, she was shocked, but then she smiled at him. “I should have believed in him more,” she thought. From then on, she encouraged John to pursue his passion for art. With his mother’s full support, John devoted himself entirely to his chosen field and became a very successful artist.
