As we know, growing plants is an effective and inexpensive way for students to observe living things and life cycles. First hand, whether you're planting flowers for a mother's day gift or having your science class, growing plants can help you develop abilities to observe, describe and classify things. In this class, you can identify and sort planned parts through hands on activities and group discussions, then work with microscopes to explore how the seeds come up and flowers bear fruits. More interestingly, you can also observe planned growth by watching slow motion videos in order to achieve Better experimental of effects. The activity is designed to use fast plans, a type of plant that has a very short life cycle. Fast plants will produce seeds about forty days after being planted. We encourage you to draw pictures to tell a series of stories about plant growth. Students who write articles to show their understanding of plant growth, flowering and seed production will have the chance to compete for certain titles. All students can get three credits for this course. Hello, everyone, i'm Chris. As we know, growing plants is an effective and inexpensive way for students to observe living things in life cycles. Many unique caves in the world are found on the shores of oceans and lakes. They are always there to attract visitors across the globe.
Sea Lion Caves
Found on the Oregon Coast, it’s well-known as the only mainland breeding ground (繁殖地) of the Steller sea lion, a near-threatened species. It’s also the longest sea cave in North America, measuring1,315 feet long. Most of the cave is at sea level and is flooded with water at high tide. One section of the cave, sitting 50 feet higher, serves as a platform to view the creatures’ habitat.
Apostle Islands Sea Caves
Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands Sea Caves are sandstone caves on the shores of Lake Superior. The caves are accessible by boat in summer, but seeing the caves during winter has become a popular, if weather-dependent, alternative. When Lake Superior freezes, the ice is sometimes thick enough to allow hikers to walk across the lake and explore the caves.
Great Blue Hole
Located off the coast of Belize, it’s a vertical cave that’s entirely underwater. It measures 984 feet in diameter and 410 feet deep. With its beautiful, clear water and a variety of wild marine life residing in its depths, the Great Blue Hole is most famous as a scuba-diving destination. Although the Great Blue Hole is one of the most spectacular, it’s not the world’s only blue hole.
Painted Cave
The Painted Cave, located on California’s Santa Cruz Island, is an expansive sea cave known for the colorful rocks, lichen and algae found on its walls. After the Sea Lion Caves, it’s the second-longest sea cave in North America, at 1,227 feet long. The cave is a popular kayaking (划艇) destination since the cave’s bottom is underwater for its entire length.
21. What may contribute most to Sea Lion Caves’ fame?
A. Being the breeding place for a rare species.
B. Being the longest sea caves across the world.
C. Its seasonal high tides at such a low sea level.
D. Its distinct platform for watching sea creatures.
22. What time might be appealing to visit Apostle Islands Sea Caves?
A. In spring time. B. During winter time.
C. In summer time. D. In the fall.
23. What do Great Blue Hole and Painted Cave have in common?
A. They can produce pleasing sound. B. They inspired many famous artists.
C. They could be a potential danger. D. They both enjoy water-based sports.

On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and unsupported, in an attempt to set the fastest ever time for a solo (独自的) crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles. Currently, the women’s record stands at 99 days and the men’s record at 52 days. The women’s record goes to the island of Oahu and the men’s record goes to the Big Island. Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or woman.
Ditton is a licensed captain and professional adventurer. The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. For the past several years, Ditton has been preparing herself and her boat, ready to take on the challenge of rowing 5,500 miles from Japan to San Francisco in spring, bidding to succeed where 19 other attempts have failed. She has completed several long training rows off the west coast of America, and most recently, a successful 728-mile, 24-day training row from Ilwaco, Washington to San Francisco in September 2019.
But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Café, an area where great white sharks frequent.
“The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Café,” says Ditton. “It’s certainly not over, until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.”
24. What is Lia Ditton’s goal for the crossing?
A. To get the best annual award. B. To be the fastest solo rower.
C. To row for the longest days. D. To reach the farthest island.
25 What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Ditton is trained every day. B. What Ditton claimed in the past.
C. Ditton’s readiness for the crossing. D. Ditton’s past experiences of rowing.
26. What can be known from Paragraph 3?
A. The journey ahead of Ditton is difficult. B. Ditton is worried about her future path.
C. Some other ships will keep her company. D. A sea disaster is there waiting for Ditton.
27. Which of the following can best describe Ditton?
A. Fearless yet knowledgeable. B. Strong-willed and positive.
C. Well-trained and intelligent. D. Self-confident but cautious.
B 25. C 26. A 27. B
根据第一段中“Ditton intends to beat the record for fastest solo row for any human, man or woman.(Ditton想要打破人类(无论男性还是女性)在这一单人划船项目中的最快纪录。)”
根据第二段中“The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on-board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. (这位出生于伦敦的40岁女子一直在旧金山的基地进行训练,并在启程前的最后几周里着手为自己的船只进行线路铺设,确保船上配备了所有必要的设备,并为75天的航行准备了充足的食物,同时尽可能地减轻船只的重量。)”以及下文内容可知,第二段主要讲述了Ditton为了这次航行所做的包括训练在内的所有前期准备。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But this week just after Lia’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower, Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to sail for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, and currents, and the travelling through the Shark Café, an area where great white sharks frequent.(但在Lia Ditton启程后的这一周,发生了一件悲剧事件。 故选A。
纵观全文以及最后一段““The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Café,” says Ditton. “It’s certainly not over, until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.”(“大陆架总是崎岖不平,但我喜欢挑战。我还会划船穿过‘鲨鱼咖啡馆’,”Ditton说:“在它结束之前,它肯定不会结束。但我已经为未来的一切做好了准备。”)”可知,Ditton试图打破记录且准备充分,面对困难时说“我爱挑战”、“我准备好了一切”,由此可知,她非常坚定,且积极乐观。故选B。

A coral farm in the Bahamas is proving that the most efficient way to restore coral reefs may be growing them on land.
Coral Vita is a reef restoration project which grows corals using microfragmentation — the process of cutting corals into small pieces and positioning them near each other to trigger a natural healing and accelerate the rapid growth of coral tissue.
While on the farm corals are also exposed to managed stress such as water warming or acidification, to help cultivate their resilience (弹性) — this process is also known as “assisted evolution”. Once fully grown, the corals are moved to degraded reef sites in the ocean where their impact is already noticeable.
“One of the restoration sites in Grand Bahama had 75 percent survivorship of corals after one year,” cofounder Sam Teicher tells Mashable. “In the Bahamas, if you have 30-50 percent survivorship after one year, that’s considered a good project. So we had one site 75 percent, another site 30 percent, another site 99 percent.”
During a mass bleaching (变白) in the summer of 2023, natural corals in the area were wiped out. But the corals Coral Vita planted, which had been given a resilience boost on the land farm, survived.
One of the elements that distinguishes Coral Vita from other reef restoration projects is that it is a for-profit organization, which Teicher says was a conscious choice.
“We felt like many environmental challenges weren’t being solved rapidly or effectively enough by those sectors, despite the best intentions and hard work,” he says. “So what if we could create a company that can pay for restorations instead of a donation here and a grant there, which is how most coral farming projects are funded, which unfortunately limits a lot of the critically needed impact to keep reefs alive.”
28. What does Coral Vita do?
A It collects endangered corals from the ocean.
B. It restores coral reefs by planting them on land.
C. It triggers a healing process of corals under the sea.
D. It cuts corals into pieces and plants them in water.
29. What does the fourth paragraph imply?
A. The restoration process still face huge challenges.
B. The restoration process will surely bring great changes.
C. The restoration will greatly improve the environment.
D The restoration has made significant achievements.
30. Why does Coral Vita choose to be a for-profit organization consciously?
A. Because it can not acquire enough donation from society.
B. Because Coral Vita can pay for restorations with the profit.
C. Because most coral farming projects are funded by companies.
D. Because the company’s objective is to make profits from the project.
31. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. What if Protecting Coral Reefs Means Growing Them on Land?
B. How Was a Reef Restoration Founded in the Bahamas?
C. The Great Achievements Coral Vita Has Achieved
D. Endangered Coral Reefs Were Saved by A Company
B 29. D 30. B 31. A

根据第一段“A coral farm in the Bahamas is proving that the most efficient way to restore coral reefs may be growing them on land.(巴哈马群岛的一个珊瑚农场证明,恢复珊瑚礁最有效的方法可能是在陆地上种植它们。)”以及第二段“Coral Vita is a reef restoration project which grows corals using microfragmentation — the process of cutting corals into small pieces and positioning them near each other to trigger a natural healing and accelerate the rapid growth of coral tissue.(Coral Vita是一个利用微分割技术培育珊瑚的珊瑚礁恢复项目——即将珊瑚切成小块并相互靠近放置,以触发自然愈合并加速珊瑚组织的快速生长。)”
第四段“One of the restoration sites in Grand Bahama had 75 percent survivorship of corals after one year,” cofounder Sam Teicher tells Mashable. “In the Bahamas, if you have 30-50 percent survivorship after one year, that’s considered a good project.(Grand Bahama的一个恢复点一年后珊瑚存活率为75%,联合创始人Sam Teicher告诉Mashable:‘在巴哈马,如果一年后珊瑚的存活率达到30-50%,那就算是一个好的项目了。’)”
最后一段提到“‘So what if we could create a company that can pay for restorations instead of a donation here and a grant there, which is how most coral farming projects are funded, which unfortunately limits a lot of the critically needed impact to keep reefs alive.’(‘那么,如果我们能创建一家公司,用利润来支付恢复费用,而不是像大多数珊瑚养殖项目那样靠这里的捐款和那里的拨款来资助,这不就能解决很多急需的保持珊瑚礁存活的影响了吗?’)”
根据文章内容,尤其是第一段“A coral farm in the Bahamas is proving that the most efficient way to restore coral reefs may be growing them on land.(巴哈马群岛的一个珊瑚养殖场正在证明,恢复珊瑚礁的最有效方法可能是在陆地上种植珊瑚礁)”可知,文章主要讲述了一个珊瑚礁恢复项目Coral Vita在陆地上建设农场种植珊瑚,这个项目所取得的成就正在证明这可能是恢复珊瑚礁的最有效方法。 故选A项。
D
When visiting a doctor a few years from now, you can expect to be accompanied by a virtual version of yourself. This so-called digital twin will be a working model of your body that can be summoned onto a physician’s computer screen. Updated with your latest vital signs, it will help the doctor make an accurate diagnosis. It also opens the door for medicines and procedures designed specifically for you, greatly increasing recovery rates.
This might seem like fantasy, but the foundations are being laid.
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London already use computer simulations of the hearts of individual patients to evaluate different treatments for atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), a common disorder. It would be far too risky to experiment this way on someone’s real heart. With other organs also being twinned by scientists, it seems likely they will eventually link up to form a virtual body.
Digital twins are starting to pop up everywhere. Among other things, they monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, keep track of Uber’s network of vehicles and replicate Amazon’s extensive supply chain well enough for the online retailer to accurately forecast sales several years ahead. They are helping local authorities respond to the effects of flooding and letting carmakers shave years off the development of new models by simulating test drives and crashes. Twins are also being developed to help manage factories, companies and entire cities.
All this is being turbo-charged by recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI), which gives twins the ability to make predictions about their physical counterparts, and fine-tune themselves on new data.
Digital twins began as basic computer models of physical objects and systems. As computers have become more powerful, twins have become more sophisticated. Complex design and modelling software means many physical objects initially take shape in the virtual world.
32. How does the digital twin benefit a patient?
A. It can accompany the patient anytime and anywhere.
B. It can help the doctor make a precise diagnosis.
C. It can replace the patient’s body to receive treatment.
D. It can be called to the reality with the order from doctors.
33. Why does the author mention atrial fibrillation in the third paragraph?
A. To stress the effective use of digital twins. B. To promote the widespread use of digital twins.
C. To prove the theory is correctly used in practice. D. To showcase the risk of using digital twins.
34. What does the underlined phrase in the fourth paragraph mean?
A. Turn up. B. Pull up. C. Spring up. D. Put up.
35. What may be the author’s attitude to the future of digital twins?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Negative. D. Promising.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D

根据第三段“Researchers at Queen Mary University of London already use computer simulations of the hearts of individual patients to evaluate different treatments for atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), a common disorder. It would be far too risky to experiment this way on someone’s real heart. With other organs also being twinned by scientists, it seems likely they will eventually link up to form a virtual body.(伦敦玛丽女王大学的研究人员已经使用针对个别患者心脏的计算机模拟来评估治疗心房颤动的不同方案,心房颤动是一种常见的疾病。在真人心脏上进行此类实验将风险极高。随着科学家们也在对其他器官进行“孪生”模拟,他们最终似乎有望将这些模拟连接起来,形成一个虚拟人体。)”可知,作者在第三段提到房颤是为了强调数字孪生的有效使用。故选A。
根据划线词后文“Among other things, they monitor the health of jet engines on airliners, keep track of Uber’s network of vehicles and replicate Amazon’s extensive supply chain well enough for the online retailer to accurately forecast sales several years ahead.(除此之外,它们还监控着客机喷气式发动机的健康状况,追踪优步(Uber)的车辆网络,并相当好地复制了亚马逊庞大的供应链,使这家在线零售商能够准确预测未来几年的销售情况。)”
根据最后一段“Digital twins began as basic computer models of physical objects and systems. As computers have become more powerful, twins have become more sophisticated. Complex design and modelling software means many physical objects initially take shape in the virtual world.(数字孪生起初是物理对象和系统的基本计算机模型。随着计算机性能的提升,数字孪生也变得越来越复杂。复杂的设计和建模软件意味着许多物理对象最初都是在虚拟世界中成形的。)”可知,作者认为数字孪生未来是有前途的。故选D。

A new citizen-science project will improve the chances of finding ET
Ever since 1993, when funding from America’s space agency, NASA, was cut, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, which scans the sky looking for radio signals from intelligent aliens, has been inventive in its methods. In particular, it was one of the pioneers of the field of citizen science.___36___
In 1999 it started SETI home, an application that uses spare processing power on volunteers’ computers to filter the information generated by its radio telescopes. These days, SETI home boasts more than one million users.
On February 29th the SETI Institute launched another citizen-science project. This time, though, its researchers are less interested in the digital computers on volunteers’ desks than in the biological ones between their ears.___37___It is expected to distinguish interesting signals from the noise of interference generated by the inhabitants of planet Earth—and to do so in real time.
___38___To do this, the SETI Institute use san instrument called the Allen Telescope Array—a group of 42 small radio-telescope dishes in California, partly paid for by the co-founder of Microsoft.
Unfortunately, some parts of the radio covering scope are full of signals created by Earthlings, rather than aliens. Everything from passing satellites and space junk to ground-based radar and even the starting systems of nearby cars can generate fake radio waves that confuse the software.___39___
But SETILive will bring them into play.___40___It is hoped that they will be able to filter out the noise and spot potentially interesting signals buried behind the radio mass from Earth. “Those interesting signals will not necessarily have come from alien civilisations.” says Chris Lintott, an astrophysicist at Oxford University who helps to run Zooniverse, a citizen-science website that manages several projects, including SETILive.
A. That’s where interested amateurs help professionals process data.
B. Rather than examining on stored data, aliens are hunted on the fly.
C. Volunteers working on SETIhome have found plenty of interesting signals.
D. It will do so by feeding data from these noisy parts of the scope to its users.
E. SETI is to detect distinctive radio-frequency emissions from advanced aliens.
F. Until now, the project has tackled it by ignoring the crowded bits of the scope.
G. SETI Live, as the project is called, uses brain capacity to solve a lingering headache.
A 37. G 38. E 39. F 40. D

Various of activities were included, covering many aspects of campus labour. Classroom cleaning and campus gardening were the basic tasks. We even established a cooking workshop, where we could prepare simple meals. The hands-on experience not only strengthened teamwork but also deepened us students’ understanding of daily chores.
The event received overwhelming enthusiasm. Both teachers and students spoke highly of it, calling it an “invaluable lesson beyond textbooks.” This enriching week left a lasting impression, reminding us that every effort shapes a better community.

The lunchroom is always so loud. Everyone is either playing games, jumping around, or yelling across the room about the funny thing. Despite how much they all talk, I couldn’t seem to find out what made some of them cool and popular. It must be something unspoken, or maybe an exclusive club they’re a part of. I barely talk though. I just laugh when everyone else is laughing, even when I don’t know what they’re laughing at.
“Mara, are those Jolly Ranchers (快乐牧场糖)?” Sasha asked excitedly. “Yeah,” I responded nervously. I’m not scared of these girls, I was just shocked that one of them called my name. “Those are my favorite! Can I have one pleaseee?” Sasha loved dragging her words like that, and those words felt like they were dragging across my brain. I hate sharing, and I especially hate sharing my candy. Mom only packs me two Jolly Ranchers. Giving one to Sasha would make me feel like a pushover, but if I didn’t share, I can kiss my social life goodbye.
As she stared at me with her big-shiny-popular-girl eyes, I got the best idea. I’m going to use my Jolly Ranchers to climb the ranks of the third grade. So I gave her the Jolly Rancher, but not without sparking up a conversation. “They’re my favorite too. My mom gives me two every day.” I said. “Luckyyy. My mom doesn’t give me candy for school, because my mom said I might choke.” she responded. Yes, she said something back! A week has passed, and soon I am at the top of the social pyramid thanks to my Jolly Ranchers.
Anyway, we have become close friends. Especially to her delight was that I gave my favorite blue Jolly Rancher to her this Friday, when we could watch movies, play games, and dance for the rest of the day. As Ms. Laney, our teacher, played the video, we all followed the dance moves on the screen. Amidst the loud music and laughing, I hear Sasha say “Look what I can do!” She did some strange jumping thing before bending to the ground, but she didn’t get back up. She looked up at me with a frightened look on her face and her hands on her neck.

“Ms Laney! Sasha’s choking” I screamed. Everyone stopped dancing as Ms. Laney ran to save Sasha. Ms. Laney flipped Sasha over her knee, delivering sharp blows on her back. The blue Jolly Rancher flew out of Sasha’s mouth. It landed in front of me, who was now on my knees in shock. I was scared I would get in trouble, sorry that she choked and angry at myself. “No more Jolly Ranchers!” Ms. Laney warned. I repeatedly said sorry to Sasha, feeling extremely sorry for giving her the Jolly Rancher.
Without Jolly Ranchers, I didn’t want to go back to school. I was afraid that no one even wanted to talk to me without them. But Sasha provided me with the opportunity of a lifetime. She included me in her conversations, and treated me as her actual friend. It turns out being cool and popular is not something unspoken. Even without Jolly Ranchers, our bonds stayed strong. We’re all just normal kids, we’ve all cried in front of each other and the idea of climbing the ranks was replaced by heartfelt friendship.

Many unique caves in the world are found on the shores of oceans and lakes They are always there to attract visitors across the globe.

On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and unsupported, in an attempt to set the fastest ever time for a solo (独自) crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles.
25. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
C
A coral farm in the Bahamas is proving that the most efficient way to restore coral reefs may be growing them on land.
Coral Vita is a reef restoration project which grows corals using microfragmentation — the process of cutting corals into small pieces and positioning them near each other to trigger a natural healing and accelerate the rapid growth of coral tissue.
While on the farm, corals are also exposed to managed stress such as water warming or acidification, to help cultivate their resilience (弹性) — this process is also known as “assisted evolution”.
A. It collects endangered corals from the ocean.
D. The restoration has made significant achievements.
B. Critical. C. Negative. D. Promising.
