As a mountain climber, Aron is used to taking risks. This is one of the exciting things about doing dangerous sports. There were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, he found himself in a very dangerous situation when climbing in Utah. On that day, Aron’s arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock that fell on him when he was climbing by himself in the mountains. Because he could not free his arm, he stayed there for five days and hoped that someone would find him. But when his water ran out, he knew that he would have to do something to save his own life. He was not ready to die that day. So he used his knife to cut off half his right arm. Then, with his left arm, he bandaged himself so that he would not lose too much blood. After that, he climbed down the mountain to find help. After losing his arm, he wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place. This means being in a difficult situation that you cannot seem to get out of. In this book, Aron tells of the importance of making good decisions and of being in control of one’s life. His love for mountain climbing is so great that he kept on climbing mountains even after this experience. Do we have the same spirit as Aron? Let’s think about it before we find ourselves “between a rock and a hard place”, and before we have to make a decision that could mean life or death. 21. Where did the accident happen on April 26, 2003? A. In America. B. In Utah. C. In China. 22. Why couldn’t Aron move? A. Because he lost his leg. B. His arm was caught under a 360-kilo rock. C. He hurt his back. 23. How did Aron free himself? A. His friend helped him. B. He climbed down the mountain to find help. C. He cut off half his right arm with his knife. 24. What did Aron do after the accident? A. He stopped climbing. B. He wrote a book called Between a Rock and a Hard Place. C. He kept on hanging out. B There is no question that the Great Wall is one of China’s must-see attractions (景点). All year round, people from near and far come to visit Badaling and Mutianyu. But there’s much more to the Great Wall than these two famous sections (部分). On our trip to China last week, we found two other sections — Jinshanling and Simatai. They’re about 150 kilometers away from Beijing. At least for now, they are almost free of visitors. Like Badaling, Jinshanling was built during the Ming Dynasty. It has about 70 watchtowers (瞭望塔) with interesting names and different shapes. It was exciting to enjoy the views (风景) there. About ten kilometers away, we visited Simatai. It also has many watchtowers with lovely names. One part of this section is called Ladder to Heaven. It was tiring and difficult to climb, but when we finally got to the top, we were surprised by the beautiful views there. It felt like walking through a Chinese painting. If you want to experience the greatness of the Great Wall away from the noisy crowd, go to Jinshanling or Simatai. You definitely won’t be disappointed. 25. When did the writer visit Jinshanling and Simatai? A. Last month. B. Last week. C. About two months ago. 26. How are Jinshanling and Simatai different from Badaling and Mutianyu? A. They are harder to climb. B. They are more popular. C. They are less crowded. 27. How did the writer feel after arriving at the top of Ladder to Heaven? A. Relaxed and proud. B. Tired but surprised. C. Tired and disappointed. 28. What can we learn from the passage? A. Simatai is ten kilometers away from Beijing. B. The writer didn’t feel comfortable about the trip. C. Both Badaling and Jinshanling were built during the Ming Dynasty. C People usually do cleaning to have a comfortable place to live in. However, some mental (精神的) or physical health problems can make it difficult for people to clean up the mess. Luckily, Brogan Ingram, a 29-year-old psychology (心理学) student, is there to help. Every weekend, Brogan helps people in her neighborhood clean their homes for free. “Someone may think cleaning is not important. But that’s not true. A dirty home can give people a lot of stress and make easy things seem impossible. I hope my cleaning service can bring people some peace,” Brogan said. Three years ago, Brogan started making cleaning videos. Now, she has many followers online. She often tells them that it’s important to do cleaning. But it’s fine if they can’t do the chores well. Just relax and take their time. She also brings the families meals, vegetables and fruit, and toys (玩偶) for their kids. When they argue, it’s like a big, black cloud hanging over our home. Also, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead, he watches whatever he wants until late at night. I don’t think this is fair. At home I always feel lonely and nervous. Is that normal? What can I do? Sad and Thirteen Dear Sad and Thirteen, It’s not easy being your age, and it’s normal to have these feelings. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family? If your parents are having problems, you should offer to help. Maybe you could do more jobs around the house so that they have more time for proper communication. Secondly, why don’t you sit down and communicate with your brother? You should explain that you don’t mind him watching TV all the time. However, he should let you watch your favorite show. I hope things will be better for you soon. Robert Hunt 33. What’s Sad and Thirteen’s problem? A. He can’t get on with his family. B. He doesn’t talk to his parents. C. He can’t watch television. 34. The idea of the show is from a children’s picture book. The book describes a mother asking her five-year-old daughter to run to a store near their home to get some milk. The child is nervous about going alone but she finishes it successfully. The TV show shows young children are also able to do many things by themselves. After watching the show, Mary decided to have a try. She then found a way on the Internet to make her children interested in the housework. Mary used an app called You Rule Chores. It can make doing the housework more like playing a game. Every time the children finish a chore, they can get a coin (硬币) on the app as a prize. The more chores they do, the more coins they can get.
