As a big animal, the giraffe has quite a small brain. However, a new study shows that giraffes are smarter than we thought. In fact, they are very good at math!
Four giraffes at the Barcelona Zoo in Spain took part in some experiments (实验).
The scientists showed the animals two see-through boxes. Each box was filled with sticks of carrot and zucchini (密生西葫芦). One box had more carrot sticks and the other had more zucchini sticks. Giraffes love carrots but are not very interested in zucchinis.
The scientists took a vegetable stick from each box. They held both sticks in closed hands. The giraffes didn’t see which vegetables had been picked up. Guess which one they chose? The stick was taken from the box with more carrots than zucchinis!
In another test, scientists covered (遮住) five sides of the two boxes. The giraffes could only see the top part of the boxes. Still, they made the same choice. What does this mean? Well, the giraffes were able to not only choose the box with the most carrots overall, but also make their decisions based on (以……为基础) parts.
The giraffes used math to make guesses. This is a well-developed thinking skill. Before this study, it had only been seen in animals with bigger brains compared to body size. These animals include monkeys, apes, and a big parrot in New Zealand.

D. To make the boxes look pretty.

Chongqing is a big city in China, often called the “Mountain City” because it has many hills and mountains. It sits where the Yangtze River and Jialing River meet, making it a place with beautiful natural views and steep (陡峭的) landscapes. Over the past few years, Chongqing has grown fast. Many people visit Chongqing not just for its amazing views, but also to taste its famous spicy food, especially hot pot, which is loved by people all over the country.
In Chongqing, people speak a special kind of Chinese called the Chongqing dialect (方言). This dialect is different from what people speak in other parts of China. It has its own special sounds and way of speaking that can be easily recognized by those who know it. Even though it might be hard for visitors to understand, for the people of Chongqing, it’s a big part of their daily life and culture. When people from Chongqing go to other places, they can still hear their dialect and feel connected to their hometown. It reminds them of their families and friends, making them feel warm inside.
Language is like a special bridge that connects people. Even if someone is far from home hearing their own dialect can make them feel closer to where they come from. I remember when I left for Beijing and worked in a store there. Many customers from Chongqing came into the store. When I heard the Chongqing dialect, I felt so excited and also spoke to them in Chongqing dialect. They smiled and felt more comfortable. It helped us understand each other better and gave more credence to my suggestions.
Language is a powerful tool that helps us talk to one another and feel like we belong. It’s amazing how speaking in our own dialect can create strong bonds between people. Whether you are at home or far away, your language can always bring you back to your roots. So, next time you hear someone speaking your dialect, remember how special it is to connect with your culture and community!

A. Because it is located near a big river. B. Because it has many hills and mountains.
C. Because it is very cold in winter. D. Because it is famous for its food.
29. What makes the Chongqing dialect different according to the passage?
A. It is spoken by people of all ages.
B. It has a special tone and pronunciation.
C. It is easier to learn than other dialects.
D. It has a rich vocabulary borrowed from other languages.
30. What does “credence” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. trust B. doubt C. disorder D. happiness
31. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The writer once worked in a store in Beijing. B. Chongqing dialect is strange.
C. It’s difficult to understand Chongqing dialect. D. The writer is from Chongqing.

Wilbur was lonely. He lay down in the straw, staring at the wooden beams of the barn (畜棚). He could not sleep. He missed Fern, the little girl who had raised him on a bottle from the time he was a tiny piglet (小猪). He thought about her gentle hands and her sweet, comforting voice. Wilbur loved her very much, and without her, the barn seemed so empty and quiet. He wished she was there to talk to him or to play games, but Fern was back at her home, leaving Wilbur alone in the big, old barn.
As he lay there, feeling the cool night air and listening to the rustling (沙沙声) of the leaves outside, a soft voice suddenly broke the silence. “Why are you so lonely?” it asked. Wilbur jumped to his feet and looked around, his heart pounding with surprise and curiosity. “Who’s there?” he whispered, peering (仔细看) into the shadows of the barn.
“I’m right here,” the voice answered gently. “Look up in the corner.”
There, in the corner of the barn, Wilbur saw a large spider spinning a web. The spider smiled down at him. “My name is Charlotte,” she said softly. “I’ve been watching you, little pig, and I think we could be friends. You seem like a nice pig, and I think you could use a friend.”
▲ He had never had a spider as a friend before. “You want to be my friend?” he asked, feeling both hopeful and confused (困惑的). He had always thought spiders were scary, but Charlotte seemed different.
“Of course,” Charlotte answered warmly, her many eyes twinkling in the moonlight. “We all need friends, Wilbur, especially in a place like this. I can see that you have a good heart, and I believe we could be very good friends. You don’t have to be lonely anymore.”
Wilbur felt a warm glow in his heart as he listened to Charlotte’s words. He could hardly believe it. Maybe he wouldn’t be so lonely after all. He watched in fascination as Charlotte continued to spin her web. Wilbur realized that having a friend, no matter how different they might seem, could make life feel less lonely and much more exciting. The barn no longer felt quite so empty, and for the first time in a while, Wilbur felt a sense of peace and happiness.

①The Paris Olympics have come to an end. China has won forty gold medals just as many as the USA. During the Olympics, we enjoyed one exciting competition after another.
②Do you know about pole vaulting (撑杆跳高)? Have you ever seen a pole vaulter jump high into the air? It’s amazing how a thin pole can hold up a person and help them jump over a bar that is so high. This special pole is not just any stick; it is made with smart designs and strong materials. With the right kind of pole, a pole vaulter can bend (弯曲) it and then spring (弹) back up, allowing them to reach great heights.
③Let’s dive into the exciting world of pole vaulting and learn how these poles help athletes achieve their dreams!
④Pole vaulting started a long time ago in ancient Greece (古希腊). People used long poles to jump over things. The first competition was around 1829 BC (公元前) in Ireland (爱尔兰), where people jumped over small streams with sticks.
⑤At first, athletes used wooden poles. In 1896, William Hoyt from America jumped 3.30 meters with a heavy wooden pole. Later, they used bamboo poles from Japan. In 1942, Warmerdam from America set a record by jumping 4.77 meters with a bamboo pole. By 1948, they made poles from fiberglass (玻璃纤维), which is lighter and bends better. These poles are often called “steel steel” and they are made from glass and plastic. Today, many poles are made from carbon fiber (碳纤维), which is even lighter and stronger than fiberglass. Modern carbon fiber poles have three layers (层): the outside is strong carbon fiber, the middle is woven carbon fiber, and the inside is fiberglass. These poles can bend a lot when athletes run fast, but they still support the athlete’s weight, helping them jump over the bar.
⑥With better technology and materials, pole vaulting has become a sport where athletes keep trying to jump higher. Every jump shows how clever and hardworking people can be. Looking forward to the next Olympic Games, who knows how high the next pole vaulters will go? The sky is the limit!
36. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. The History of the Olympic Games B. The Development of Pole Vaulting Equipment
C. The Story of Ancient Greek Sports D. How to Win a Gold Medal in Pole Vaulting
37. What is the author’s attitude towards the development of pole vaulting poles?
A. Not liking the changes. B. Not caring about the changes.
C. Supportive of the advancements. D. Afraid to see the new materials.
38. How has the pole vaulting pole changed over time according to the article?
A. It has become heavier and less flexible. B. It has improved to be lighter and more flexible.
C. It has changed from metal to plastic. D. It has been shortened to make the sport easier.
39. Which is the best structure of the passage?
A. ①; ②③④⑤; ⑥ B. ①②; ③④⑤; ⑥
C. ①②; ③④; ⑤⑥ D. ①; ②③④; ⑤⑥

Wilbur was lonely. He lay down in the straw, staring at the wooden beams of the barn (畜棚). He could not sleep. Wilbur loved her very much, and without her, the barn seemed so empty and quiet. He wished she was there to talk to him or to play games, but Fern was back at her home, leaving Wilbur alone in the big, old barn.

Li Ping’s mother was born unable to speak. Because of this, they never talked. Even at home, they sat quietly or did their own things.
The school was far away, so Li Ping and his friends brought lunch boxes. One day, he hurried to school and forgot his lunch box, and his father was out to work. During the last class of the morning, while the teacher was teaching, his mother appeared at the classroom door. She tried to talk to the teacher, making sounds that made the students laugh. Finally, the teacher asked who she was bringing food for.
Feeling embarrassed (尴尬的), Li Ping stood up but did not take the lunch box. Instead, he shouted, “Why did you come? Isn’t my dad home? I don’t want your food!” His mother looked confused and waved her hands. He angrily knocked over his lunch box, kicked it away, and ran out of the classroom, leaving his mother standing there alone. Later, the teacher scolded (批评) him. Li Ping learned that his mother worried he would be hungry. But he couldn’t stand the teasing (嘲笑) from classmates, who called out, “Mute mom! Mute mom! Li Ping has a mute mom!”
From then on, Li Ping’s mother never visited his school again, whether it was junior high, high school, or university. She simply took good care of him in his daily life. One autumn, she suddenly fell sick and left them forever before reaching the hospital.
After the funeral, Li Ping told his dad, “I only regret (遗憾) that I have never heard her say ‘I love you.’” After his words, his dad slowly said, “Maybe that was because you never really ‘listened’!”
