On my first round-the-world trip in 2006, I planned everything out before the trip. I knew where I was going, staying for how long and how I would get there. And then half-way I ditched the plan and went with the flow (随大流). Over the years, how I plan my travel has changed. Now I am a last-minute planner and plan.
Traveling without a plan gives you great flexibility (灵活性). Since nothing is booked far before the trip, you can turn to something different when you change your mind or something better comes along. I changed my plans to meet a friend on an island in Thailand and stayed for a month. I wouldn’t have had that experience if I had kept to my plan.
However, most new travelers are the opposite: They over-plan their trips. They make plans for every day, sometimes even for every hour. Two days here, three hours there. I understand why people do that. When time is short, you want to see as much as possible. You don’t want to waste a single second.
But in travel, less is more. Spending more time in one place allows you to get a better feeling for the rhythm (节奏) of life. You can visit in a relaxing way, and spend your time on the happy accidents of travel.
When I first made my travel plan, I tried to include everything in it. Then I realized it was hard to make it come true, and changed my plan. I came up with a list of just one or two things I want to see each day. It’s an important lesson to learn. I think the best trip plan is to work out the general path you want to take, and let your travels begin from there. This way you will never be locked into a certain place if your feelings change.

Dear Victor,
I have received your letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible enough to decide on your career.
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which provides you with not only something useful, but also something you like. Then, you must read a lot in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When the mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in mass communication like TV and film production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success. We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes!
Your loving father

What’s your dream job? How much do you know about it? A group of students from Tianjin found a problem among young teenagers: Most of them have few ideas about their career plans.
To offer teenagers proper career guidance (指导), the students from Tianjin TEDA No. 1 Middle School started a project called “Dian Zhi Cheng Shi”. “Our survey shows that 75 percent of students want to know more about different jobs. However, when you let others know what you will do, you are sending them a message that you have made the resolution to make your dream come true. Share what your plans are with your friends or family, so they may be able to give you help or encouragement.
Be hard-working. The key to making a dream come true is that you need to be hard-working enough. Every little thing helps. The small achievements you get every day will end up becoming a great dream come true.

Everyone has a dream, and so do I. When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being different kinds of people. At first, I wanted to be a teacher because I thought it was cool to teach students new knowledge. I could see the sweet smiles on their faces when they understood something new. I even dream of walking on the moon or even travelling to Mars one day.
I know that the path to becoming a scientist is long and full of difficulties. But I’m ready. To make my dream come true, I am working hard at all subjects, especially math and science. Progress means the act of going forward. 1 By setting and actively working towards our goals, we can make progress in our life.
To make more progress in life, start looking at problems in a different way. Whatever happens, if we think positively, it can be useful and helpful. 2 After we solve problems one after another, we can make more progress and become stronger.
Having confidence is helpful for us to make progress. Confidence comes from different places, such as proper education, training or having good relationships. 3 These people can help push us towards progress.
Slow progress is still progress. Just as the old saying goes, “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Progress usually comes a lot more slowly than we expect. 4
One important thing is that we keep taking steps towards our goals, and another is that we clearly remember what our goals are all the time. The actual speed isn’t important.
The road to progress is not always smooth. 5 Sometimes, maybe it feels like we’re taking one step forward and three steps back, but it won’t always be like that. Keep going towards our goals and we can much more easily make the progress we want.
A.They made slow progress towards the mountain top.
B.Most progress often comes with setbacks (挫折) along the way.
C.We should also stay with people who believe in us and actively support us.
D.Even if progress is slow, try not to be worried.
E.We need to know that problems are part of our life.
F.Making any kind of progress can make us healthy and happy in life.

Maybe you want to exercise more or start going to bed earlier in the coming year. 1
·Make a detailed (详细的) plan.
If your New Year’s plan is to exercise five days each week, a plan like “I’ll exercise on weekdays” would not be clear. A detailed plan like “I’ll exercise at school on weekdays during my lunch break” would be better. 2
·Make it fun.
If it’s not fun to exercise or study, you won’t keep it easily. 3 If you can only drink your favourite juice during study hours, you’ll look forward to studying.
· 4
Tell a few friends about your goals so you’ll feel a deep sense of shame if they check back later and find out you haven’t followed through.
·Give yourself more chances.
You planned to get to bed early every night, but one Friday, you stayed up late. 5 But giving yourself one or two more chances can help you get better results.
A.Get a little help from your friends.
B.Make more friends.
C.Here is some advice that can help you keep your goals.
D.After that, you may want to give up the early-to-bed plan.
E.But if you get fun from your exercise or study, you’ll keep longer.

Do you have a beautiful dream? What are you going to be when you grow up? I know almost everyone has their own dreams in their life. The dreams are very important for people because the dreams can make them work harder.
I am a student studying in a school now. My dream is to be a teacher in West China. Many children there want to go to school but they can’t. Their families are very poor and the parents don’t have enough money to send their children to school. But if the children want to change their lives, they should go to school.
There are not enough teachers, so I want to be a teacher to help them. I will be kind to my students and make friends with them. I will give them love and teach them how to be a useful person. I think it is the greatest job in the world. I’m sure I will be a good teacher and I’ll try my best to help the children in West China.

2.What does the writer do?
3.What should the children do in West China if they want to change their lives?

A resolution is a strong decision to do something. Many people make resolutions at the beginning of the New Year. A middle school in Taiyuan surveyed 100 students about their New Year’s resolutions. Getting better grades, exercising more often, eating more healthily and reading more books are the top four.
The survey also shows that though students make resolutions every year, only less than 8% of them actually succeed. Here are several ways to make it easier for you to keep your resolution.
Set your resolution small.
Setting small goals is much better than trying to make big ones. 35% of New Year’s resolutions fail because they make big goals. For example, if you want to get healthier, it will be easier to start with a bit of daily exercise.
__▲__
A plan can make it easier for you to make your resolution come true. For example, if you want to take up a sport as a hobby, first decide which sport and how often you’ll play. Then, make a detailed plan and stick to it.
Track (跟踪) your progress.
Some people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions because they don’t track their progress. Write your resolution in a notebook. If your plan is to read, note down how many pages you plan to read weekly and mark the page numbers. This way, you can track your progress closely. This will help you to keep trying hard. Besides, this can make you more confident (自信的). Every time you achieve something, you will probably get a feeling of achievement and that will encourage you to move on.
1.How many students make resolutions about exercising?
2.Why cannot 35% of New Year’s resolutions come true?
3.What can be put in __▲__?
4.What are the benefits (好处) of tracking your progress according to the passage?
5.What’s your New Year’s resolution? How are you going to keep it?

Hey, Captain Lim,
First of all, I would like to say that it is a great pleasure to be able to speak to an experienced pilot who knows what life is like in the sky.
I am a 13-year-old girl and for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a pilot. I would spend hours watching the planes at the airport take off from the runway. I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored before.
I just love airplanes and flying. The idea to fly people around the world always makes me excited. I’m just not sure if it’s the right job for me. My dad says I need to make a quick decision because now is the right time to start training. It’s true. I want to start early. It sounds funny, but I want to be young and energetic when I’m flying a Qantas Boeing 737, or even an A380!
I have so many questions about it—do you get paid well? I want to have a pretty good income. I want to have a big family and house when I grow up. And it will need a lot of money. Is it fun? Is it safer than being a doctor or a teacher? Will I regret it? I hate regretting things I’ve done. Is it really hard? I’m also a girl, so will I be looked down upon?
And I would also like to know, if I definitely (明确地) want to become a pilot, where and when I should start training if I want to start early.
Thanks so much, Captain!
Regards,
Mary Anne

Everyone has a dream, and so do I. When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of being different kinds of people. At first, I wanted to be a teacher because I thought it was cool to teach students new knowledge. I could see the sweet smiles on their faces when they understood something new. It felt like I was lighting up their minds. But later, after watching many exciting medical dramas on TV, I changed my mind. I hoped to become a doctor. Having confidence is helpful for us to make progress. Confidence comes from different places, such as proper education, training or having good relationships. 3 These people can help push us towards progress.

阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Regards,
Mary Anne
