Ke Xianye is different from others. When he was 3 years old, the doctor said he had autism (自闭症) and had to live with it through his whole life. The doctor probably never imagined that years later, Ke would get a degree (学位) in music at a university. He even wrote a song for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics with his co-workers when he was 24. Through it, he encouraged players from across the world to go “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together.”
As a child, Ke loved music very much. He would sit quietly for hours when listening to music. His mother, Jiao Shengmin, was glad that he had great interest in music. But it was hard for an autistic child to get an education at school. “Because he didn’t know how to communicate, Ke wouldn’t sit still in class or listen to the teacher,” Jiao said.
However, Jiao never thought about letting her son give up. She did a lot to help her son keep up with his studies. Math and physics were easy for Ke. He sometimes didn’t need to think to get the answers. But he was poor at languages. When Ke passed the gaokao, Jiao had to make the university believe that Ke would do well because it had never accepted a student with autism before.
Now, Ke dreams of becoming a famous musician. Jiao says, “I will do my best to help him realize his dream.”
