Hot Chocolate
“What is the matter with you? I've been running after you and calling your name for the last ten minutes! What's the problem?”
Jacob and I'd been friends since our childhood. And now, all of a sudden, he was acting like he'd never known me before. I knew there must be something wrong.
He was in silence. I couldn't stand seeing my best friend like this, so I took his hand. “Come on. Let's go get some hot chocolate.”
Together, we entered our favorite coffee shop. “Two hot chocolates, please!” I said to the owner. As soon as we sat down, a waiter brought our drinks to the table. Jacob still said nothing the whole time.
I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting, drinking slowly and looking at him. Finally, he took a deep breath and started to talk.
“Maggie, if I tell you something, do you promise to keep it to yourself?”
“Jacob, you know you can always tell me anything! I'll help you through whatever's troubling you. And we'll come up with a solution, together.”
With tears running down his face, he took another deep breath, and said quietly, in a low voice, “Maggie, Mom has cancer (癌症).”
Shocked, I had never imagined something this bad could happen to someone so close to me, especially after Grandpa had been so sick. I thought of Jacob's mom as my second mom. I tried to come up with something comforting to say, but I couldn't.
He started talking again: “She's going to need a surgery (手术) and maybe chemotherapy (化疗) for the next several months. Months! I don't know if I can deal with this. I don't know how the rest of my family is going to deal with it, either. She might die at any time. This is going to change all of our lives forever!”
I was quiet for a little while, but I finally knew what to say. “You know what? When Grandpa had cancer, I made a huge mistake. I thought it was the end of the world for all of us. Jacob, I know this is going to be difficult for you, and the rest of your family. But think of all of the good things! Be thankful that someone found it just in time. Be thankful that we're living in a time where we have the knowledge of medicine and treatment that can help your mom live. She might not even need the chemo! The surgery alone might work.”
“I know, Maggie, but what if…”
“Look”, I stopped him “I know it'll be hard for you to accept this, but you need to be strong, for your mom. There is a big chance that your mom will live. Don't make her feel like there's no hope, because honestly, Jacob, there is. Show her that.”
Jacob was thinking hard, looking at the table like he'd never seen it before. And I was surprised when he finally spoke. “Maggie, you know what? You are absolutely right. Worries won't make Mom healthy again, right? Thank you so much. You're like my sister.”
Jacob stood up and offered his hand to me. He helped me up and handed me my backpack, and without another word, he led me out of the coffee shop, ready to face any difficulties that came in his way.

In Paralympic Sports (残奥会), many blind or nearly blind athletes race (比赛) with the help of a guide. These pairs work very closely together.
Jerusa Geber is a runner who lost her sight as a teenager. When she races with her guide Garcia, he runs to her left. They each hold one end of a short rope. If they've started well, he matches her speed bit by bit, but with the opposite foot. They work so well together that Jerusa now holds the women's world record in the 100-meter race for blind or nearly blind athletes.
Since 2012, guides in the Paralympics can win medals too. But the teamwork is about more than just winning. Garcia is a runner himself. “I like being a guide.” he said. “I feel more pressure (压力) at the Paralympics. I have to give 200% of myself to avoid mistakes and help my teammate do her best.”
In cycling, Hannah Chadwick and her guide, Skyler Espinoza, also work closely. When they ride together, Espinoza always holds Chadwick's hand before starting. “It's a reminder (提示) that we're in this together.” Espinoza said.
Chadwick and Espinoza follow the same training plan. Sometimes, when the training gets hard, Chadwick thinks of her teammate. “I'm not training just for myself.” she said. “I'm training for both of us!”
People sometimes say Espinoza is making a sacrifice (牺牲) for a disabled athlete. But she doesn't see it that way. Espinoza believes that if she hadn't been a Paralympic guide, she would never have shone so much in sports. “I'm lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose to do it with her.” she said.
27.How does Garcia help the blind athlete Jerusa Geber?
A.He walks in front of her to show the path.
B.He runs behind her and shouts directions.
C.He rides a bicycle next to her to guide the way.
D.He holds a rope, running beside her with the opposite foot.
28.Which of the following words best describes the guides in the Paralympics?
A.Crazy. B.Generous. C.Brave. D.Humorous.
29.What's the best title for the text?
A.Winning Together B.How to Become a Great Guide
C.Special Help for Athletes D.The Hard Life of Paralympic Athletes
D

Accidents often happen in schools around the world. For this reason, the ICRC (红十字国际委员会) began its education program in 2017. First aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kalida is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan (阿塞拜疆). She took part in ICRC's first aid training in 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in accidents everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since attending the training, Kalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught some students and her cousins some of the skills. “The training is important, ” Kalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”
Marisela teaches at a school in Venezuela (委内瑞拉). The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid training was to stay calm in order to make her safe at the moment. The training has made her a strong and confident person and an excellent first aider (急救员). She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides, they have taught their students some first aid skills.
Thanks to the ICRC's first aid training, many students and teachers, like Kalida and Marisela, have become professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience (韧性) within themselves.
34.Why did the ICRC begin its education program around the world?
35.When did Kalida take part in ICRC's first aid training?
36.What was the most important thing Marisela learned from the training?
37. What do you think of the ICRC's first aid training? Why?

Chadwick and Espinoza follow the same training plan. Sometimes, when the training gets hard, Chadwick thinks of her teammate. “I'm not training just for myself.” she said. “I'm training for both of us!”
People sometimes say Espinoza is making a sacrifice (牺牲) for a disabled athlete. But she doesn't see it that way. Espinoza believes that if she hadn't been a Paralympic guide, she would never have shone so much in sports. “I'm lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose to do it with her.” she said.

Heart attack (心脏病)
If you meet someone probably stopping breathing, call 120 right away. Let the patient (病人) lie down and loosen (解开) his/her tight clothing while communicating with him/her.

C.Special Help for Athletes D.The Hard Life of Paralympic Athletes

故选A。
