In the Zhou Dynasty, people held activities to greet winter and worship the moon whenever the Mid-Autumn Festival came. It became very popular in the Tang Dynasty that people admired the full moon. bright moon or went to see the beautiful scene on lakes to celebrate the festival.
Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the custom of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration has become pretty popular. Together with the celebration there are some special customs in different parts of China, such as burning incense(熏香) and planting Mid-Autumn trees. However, the custom of playing under the moon is not so popular as it used to be nowadays. But enjoying the bright moon is still popular. Whenever the festival sets in, people will look up at the full moon, drinking wine to celebrate their happy life or thinking of their relatives and friends far from home, and sending all of their best wishes to them.
