Passage 1
“There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings.” This is the surprising first sentence of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, the 1962 book that arguably sparked the modern environmental movement.
While most people have heard of Silent Spring, many fewer have actually read it. It is now largely classified as textbooks or other educational contexts.
That is why its first sentence is so surprising: Silent Spring does not read like a textbook. It begins with a fable and is filled with beautiful, emotional writing and passion throughout. Carson raised a public outcry against DDT not just with her research on its harmful effects, but with the vivid descriptions, powerful arguments, and poctic language that lift Silent Spring into the world of other great works of American literature.
The poetry of Carson’s opening continues into the rest of Silent Spring. There is poetic language throughout the book; even Carson’s chapter titles such as “Earth’s Green Mantle (披风)” and “Through a Narrow Window” are not what we might expect for a scientific work. But the places where Carson’s artistry is more apparent are in her chapter introductions. She weaves her most vivid images in the first few paragraphs of each chapter, creating a more realistic experience for the reader before moving into more complex scientific writing.
While she’s good at translating the beauty of the natural world, the powerful emotions Carson raises with this imagery are rarely rosy. Not only is Silent Spring a descriptive scientific work and a great work of literature — it is also an accusation. She uses the word “evil”10 times, the word “suffer” 35 times, and different forms of the word “death” a total of 213 times.
With this landmark book, Carson gracefully established herself as both an important figure of modern American literature and a pioneer of the 20th century’s environmental movement. Her words are effective and convincing, and more so because they are beautiful. Silent Spring is clearly a tapestry (挂毯) patiently woven — with a cause worth fighting for.
1.What is the opening of Silent Spring like?
A.It clearly reveals its writing purpose. B.It directly presents Carson’s arguments.
C.It starts with quotes from victims of pollution. D.It reads more like a fable than a science book.
2.Which part of Silent Spring best shows Carson’s literary skill?
A.The opening. B.The chapter titles.
C.The chapter introductions. D.The conclusion.
3.Why did Carson use emotional words like “death” repeatedly?
A.To make her writing less technical. B.To highlight the urgency of her warning.
C.To express her pessimism about the future. D.To contrast nature’s beauty with human destruction.
4.What’s the main focus of the passage?
A.Why Silent Spring still matters.
B.How powerful languages can be.
C.Why Silent Spring is both science and literature.
D.What role Carson plays in environmental history.
Passage 2
A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry Ⅷ a good king?” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom at a loss and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine, is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful? How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill? Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem (贝叶斯定理), a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
1.What can we know from paragraph 1?
A.Designing math homework is easier.
B.Quadratic equation may confuse young learners.
C.Nine-year-olds enjoy history questions.
D.Postgraduates find math problems too simple.
2.What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author?
A.It covers various topics.
B.It casts light on math thoughts.
C.It satisfies maths professionals.
D.It makes sense to ordinary people.
3.How does Professor Spiegelhalter explain probability and statistics?
A.By using advanced mathematical formulas.
B.By analyzing real-life questions with simple maths.
C.By discussing complex scientific theories.
D.By conducting experiments in lecture theatres.
4.The text is probably written to ______.
A.introduce a new book on mathematics.
B.compare teaching mathematics with history.
C.explain complex mathematical theories simply.
D.persuade people to study probability and statistics.
Passage 3
Writers of science fiction often feel more prescient (预知的) than others. Whether the threat to women’s rights in the work of Margaret Atwood, the architectural and social dystopias (反乌托邦) of J. G. Ballard’s novels, or the internet-predicting world of E M. Forster’s The Machine Stops, the genre are filled with prescient writers dealing with ever more familiar issues.
Out of all such writers, few seem more likely to predict our times than the American author Philip K. Dick, who died in 1982. In the 30-year period of work, Dick wrote 44 novels and countless short stories, adaptations of which went on to redefine science fiction on screen.
Dick had a surprising ability to predict what would happen in modern world. The famous science-fiction and fantasy author Stan Nicholls suggests Dick’s work is prescient because it explored the future through the then-present. “His stories supposed the popularity of the Internet, virtual reality, facial recognition software, driverless cars and 3D printing,” Nicholls said—while also pointing out that “it’s a misinterpretation that prediction is the primary purpose of science fiction. The genre’s hit rate is actually not very good in that respect. Like all the best science fiction, his stories weren’t really about the future, they were about the here and now.”
Whether his visions were, as he believed, a product of small problems in the simulation or his fading mental health, one thing is for certain—the world in which the work of Philip K. Dick is well known today feels ever closer to the ones imagined by this most unique and exceptional writer.
1.Why does the author mention three writers in paragraph 1?
A.To explain how great their novels are.
B.To explain the women’s rights in the future.
C.To show science fictions have the foresight.
D.To show the same interest of science fictionists.
2.What can we know about Philip K Dick?
A.He had the capacity to predict the present age.
B.He adapted his four short stories for the screen.
C.He often had ideas different from the editor’s.
D.He died in the USA in the 21st century.
3.What does Nicholls think about all the best science fictions?
A.They are all about other planets. B.They all focus on the present
C.They should develop various themes. D.They should make readers feel satisfied.
4.What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Philip K Dick had a great impact on science.
B.Philip K. Dick had traveled into the future then.
C.People don’t agree to Philip K. Dick’s prediction.
D.The world in Philip K. Dick’s works is similar to today’s world.
Passage 4
A quiet space is often considered essential for achieving the concentration that leads to academic success. But research shows that some students may benefit from breaking the silence with certain kinds of music while they study. Music has a powerful influence on both the body and the brain, in ways that can help students navigate the physical and emotional barriers that come with academic challenges.
One US study compared students who took a test to soft music with those who took the test under silent conditions. The study found that students taking a test to music not only completed more questions within a set time but also answered more questions correctly. Music has been further linked to improvements in memory and recall. Experts have found that when music stimulates mood and motivation, students are able to learn more and to better demonstrate their knowledge.
A bit of mood music affects more than just memory and recall when students hit the books. Music can also relieve stress associated with school. Scientists have learned that music engages the autonomic nervous system, which not only controls the unconscious functions of the body but also influences emotions. So it’s no surprise that researchers from the Group Health Research Institute concluded that certain kinds of background music can be just as effective at reducing stress as a massage. Furthermore, while the brain feels better with music, the body may as well. Research shows that certain types of music can make physical pain feel less intense. What’s more, calming music with a steady, meditative rhythm can help people sleep longer and more deeply.
However, some educators express concern that listening to music while trying to concentrate may do more harm than good. Loud music may have a negative influence on a student’s mood or act as a distraction. Actually, the best approach may depend on the students themselves. Listening to music during study time may not mean a guaranteed A for all students, but those who find it helpful should be allowed to plug in their headphones.
1.What does the underlined word “navigate” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A.Recognize. B.Overcome.
C.Assess. D.Create.
2.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Music helps students get rid of physical pain.
B.Loud music has the same calming effect as a massage.
C.Listening to music makes it easier for students to multitask.
D.Music helps students better remember relevant information.
3.The author writes Paragraph 3 mainly to ______.
A.present the effects of music on mind and body
B.compare the functions of different types of music
C.confirm the impacts of music on memory and recall
D.give examples of the influences of music on emotions
4.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A.The Power of Silence B.Music to a Patient
C.The Score to Better Scores D.Road to Academic Success
Passage 5
If you ever visit an English village, make sure to look out for Morris dance. Undoubtedly as one of the strangest traditions of English culture, Morris dance is a form of folk dance that dates back to the 15th century. If you ever get the chance, you really have to see it.
Men and women wearing old-fashioned and worn clothing dance in the streets of towns and villages across the country during the holiday periods. Women wear long, frilly (多褶边的) skirts and men wear short trousers with bells attached (系) to them. They dance to traditional folk music which is often played on traditional musical instruments.
Some groups carry heavy black sticks with which they beat against each other while they dance. Other groups wave handkerchiefs in the air while they perform. The dances are usually performed near a pub so that when it’s over, the dancers and the audience can sing some traditional folk songs over a pint of beer. The celebrations will often continue long into the night, by which point most people are too drunk to think about performing again.
Morris dance is a great English tradition but it’s facing a big crisis (危机). As the years go by, fewer and fewer young people are joining Morris dance groups. The dancers are getting older and older and finally, if nothing is done to change this trend, the tradition will die out within the next few decades.
If you’ve ever had the fortune to see Morris dance, you may catch on to why teenagers aren’t rushing to sign up. Putting it to the point, it’s not exactly the coolest thing for an 18-year-old to do. Why dress up in bells and funny clothes when you could go clubbing? Or play sport? Or do anything else?
However, it would be a great pity to lose such a fun and lively part of England’s history and culture. It’s important to preserve some traditions and customs especially when it’s something as harmless and happy as Morris dance. So here’s a toast to the next generation of would-be Morris dancers!
1.What do we know about the Morris dancers?
A.They dance in pubs late into the night.
B.They sing folk songs while they dance.
C.They wear long dresses with bells attached.
D.They perform with sticks or handkerchiefs.
2.What is the present situation of Morris dance?
A.It holds little attraction for young people.
B.It is keeping pace with people’s demands.
C.It has been protected by the government.
D.It is being changed by modern people.
3.What does the underlined phrase “catch on to” mean?
A.Predict. B.Understand. C.Object. D.Complain.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A.The origin of Morris dance. B.The popularity of Morris dance.
C.The protection of Morris dance. D.The introduction of Morris dance.
Passage 6
Can artificial intelligence produce new music hits?
Recently, the release of the AI music platform Suno has drawn much attention. It’s a free website that generates songs of various types tailored to user specifications (具体要求).
Driven by curiosity, I immediately asked Suno to create some pop songs. I must admit, it’s very user-friendly for music amateurs and beginners. Just provide some details like the theme, style, and even the language you want for your song, and it will give you two songs within a minute.
The first song amazed me. It had all the elements that a pop song should have: The words in the song weren’t just put together randomly; they were carefully created to express strong feelings, such as “Every day feels like a struggle, a battle I can’t win.” The arrangement also included piano, guitar, drums and other elements.
However, as I explored more of the songs Suno could make, I realized that AI struggles to create music that truly resonates with us as human beings. Despite listening to many of the songs it made, I couldn’t recall any of them afterward.
The formulaic (公式化的) arrangements and generic (笼统的) lyrics are the main issues I have with it. For example, the melody of the first two lines of each chorus (副歌) tends to be the same, just with different words, which soon becomes predictable. Over time, music lovers might lose interest. Additionally, since AI lacks real-life experiences, the lyrics it generates are too generic, lacking specific scenes or imagery that make you feel present in the moment.
But this doesn’t mean AI is useless in music creation. Some music influencers have used Suno to generate a song, drawn inspiration from it, and transformed it into something uniquely theirs, resulting in catchy (朗朗上口的) and personalized music.
In conclusion, platforms like Suno can be useful tools for generating music to meet simple needs. However, it is human creativity and unique ideas that fill songs with emotion and make them memorable. This is why we should appreciate and respect the work of real musicians.
By ZHANG DONGYUE, 21st Century Teens
Seeing Suno’s potential (P5)
1.What does the article tell us about Suno?
A.It offers professional music production.
B.It provides tutorials for music amateurs.
C.It gives users access to a vast library of songs.
D.It allows users to create customized songs.
2.What does the underlined phrase “resonates with” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Connects. B.Reflects.
C.Challenges. D.Uplifts.
3.What is one issue with AI-generated music, according to the author?
A.It is overly emotional.
B.It lacks specificity and vividness.
C.It often contains inappropriate lyrics.
D.It repeats a structure throughout a song.
4.What does the author think of AI’s role in music creation?
A.It offers limitless possibilities.
B.It is the future of the music industry.
C.It can complement human creativity.
D.It needs to learn from real musicians.

根据第三段“That is why its first sentence is so surprising: Silent Spring does not read like a textbook. It begins with a fable and is filled with beautiful, emotional writing and passion throughout.(这就是为什么它的第一句话会如此令人惊讶:《寂静的春天》读起来不像是一本教科书。它以一则寓言开篇,全书充满了优美动人的文字和强烈的感情色彩)”可知,《寂静的春天》这本书的开头读起来更像是一个寓言故事,而非一本科学著作。故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段“But the places where Carson’s artistry is more apparent are in her chapter introductions. She weaves her most vivid images in the first few paragraphs of each chapter, creating a more realistic experience for the reader before moving into more complex scientific writing.(但卡逊作品中更具艺术表现力的部分体现在她的章节引言部分。她在每一章的前几段中巧妙地融入了最生动的意象,为读者营造出一种更为真实的阅读体验,然后再深入探讨更为复杂的科学内容)”可知,《寂静的春天》这部作品中第一章的介绍部分最能体现卡逊的文学才华,故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“While she’s good at translating the beauty of the natural world, the powerful emotions Carson raises with this imagery are rarely rosy. Not only is Silent Spring a descriptive scientific work and a great work of literature — it is also an accusation. She uses the word “evil”10 times, the word “suffer” 35 times, and different forms of the word “death” a total of 213 times.(虽然卡逊在描绘自然界的美方面颇为出色,但她通过这些意象所引发的强大情感却很少是美好的。《寂静的春天》不仅是一部描述性的科学著作和杰出的文学作品,它还是一份控诉书。她用了“邪恶”这个词10次,“受苦”这个词35次,而“死亡”这个词的各种形式总共出现了213次)”可知,卡逊通过多次使用“evil”、“suffer”、“death”这类带有强烈情感色彩的词汇,目的是强调环境问题的严重性,即,突出她所发出警告的紧迫性。故选B。
4.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“With this landmark book, Carson gracefully established herself as both an important figure of modern American literature and a pioneer of the 20th century’s environmental movement. Her words are effective and convincing, and more so because they are beautiful. Silent Spring is clearly a tapestry (挂毯) patiently woven — with a cause worth fighting for.(凭借这本具有里程碑意义的著作,卡逊成功地确立了自己作为现代美国文学重要人物以及20世纪环保运动先驱的地位。她的文字既有力又令人信服,而且更因其优美而显得更加出色。《寂静的春天》无疑是一幅精心编织的挂毯——背后有着值得为之奋斗的崇高目标)”结合文章主要介绍了蕾切尔·卡逊的《寂静的春天》,其开篇像寓言,文学性强,兼具科学与文学特质,是环保运动里程碑。可知,这篇文章的主要论述重点是《寂静的春天》为何既是科学著作又是文学作品。故选C。

【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B 4.D
