It is known that when you are in your thirties, you will begin to lose muscle mass. This loss actually contributes to achy joints, the increased risk of injury, and the “middle-age spread” we all fear. What's more, the older you get, the faster muscle mass decreases. It means that eventually, simple tasks like getting out of a chair and climbing stairs can become more difficult. Strength training can help you build muscles, make you strong, increase your staying power and make everyday activities easier. By combining strength and power training exercises, you'll not only get stronger, but also improve your reaction speed. As you grow older, that's critical because it can help prevent falls. Here is a book, Strength and Power Training for All Ages, for your reference. Common sense about fitness in the book: ·The key muscles to work for an injury-free body ·How to tell how much weight is suitable for you ·How to strengthen the bones most likely to break ·How to take pressure off your knees when walking or running ·Why you'll want to apply heat to sore joints before you exercise Four total body workouts in the book: ·Build bones ·Fight diseases ·Improve balance ·Strengthen muscles & Increase muscle power Get a copy and start training, and then you'll discover a whole new self. 21.What will happen as people age according to paragraph 1? A.They will need less exercise. B.They will improve reaction speed. C.They will experience muscle loss. D.They will have better staying power. 22.What does Strength and Power Training for All Ages mainly teach people to do? A.Train their brains. B.Build a sound body. C.Treat bone diseases. D.Lose their weight. 23.What is the text? A.A notice. B.A folk tale. C.A scientific paper. D.An advertisement. B It was the dead of winter when Dad told me that he found a delicate small bag in the snow on his way out of a clinic. “It was filled with seeds, so I planted them in pots beside the living room window where they could get such great light.” Dad was excited to have a planting project in the winter. He missed tending his garden plot, which was the size of a small farm. I now lived out of state, but Dad reported in his daily phone calls, “These plants seem to double in size overnight. It's only been a few weeks, and they are almost touching the ceiling.” Since Dad had green fingers, I wasn't surprised at that. I couldn't imagine what plant would do so well. I knew photos would not come soon because Dad had to use up the film in his camera and then developed the pictures. During one call, Dad said, “Today at work, one of my co-workers was wearing a T-shirt with a screen-printed picture of the same leaf as my mysterious houseplants. I told him that I had those same herbs, which were growing like weeds, and that I had to get rid of them.” Dad continued, “He eagerly took them off my hands, and now I can see out the window again.” This without doubt awakened my curiosity, and I decided to do some research. In those days, that meant going to the library's reference section. I did some reading and photocopied some articles. I mailed them to my father. Dad called, “I just couldn't believe what I read in the papers you sent. Those pictures were exactly what my plants looked like. No wonder my co-worker was so willing to take them.” We both laughed till we cried when we ultimately realized my father had just raised a harvest of precious Chinese herbs used to ease pain. 24.Why did Dad plant the seeds? A.Because it was the doctor's advice. B.Because he had a small farm at home. C.Because it satisfied his eagerness for gardening. D.Because the seeds would bring him rich rewards. 25.What does the underlined word “that” mean in Paragraph 2? A.Dad's gardening talents. B.The herbs' quickly growing. C.Dad's efforts to tend the seeds. D.A planting project in the winter. 26.What can be inferred about the co-worker? A.He had little interest in the plants. B.He recognized the value of the plants. C.He desired to learn from the author's dad. D.He wanted to show his knowledge about plants. 27.What is a suitable title for the text? A.Seed catcher B.Window scenery C.Helpful co-worker D.Innocent gardener C Where do great musicians, mathematicians and sportspeople get their talent? For decades now, we have assumed that most of them are simply born with a talent that ordinary people do not have. When the baseball legend Ted Williams claimed that his achievement didn't relate to natural ability but was the result of practice, practice, practice, people assumed that he was merely being modest. But scientists now believe that there is a good deal of truth in what he said. Throughout the last century, it was accepted that we inherit(经遗传获得) many of our characteristics from our parents via their DNA, that each of us inherits a fixed amount of intelligence—a fixed IQ, and that most of us are to be ordinary. But now it is accepted that our genes interact with our surroundings, getting turned on and off all the time. “There are no genetic factors that can be studied independently of the environment,” explains Michael Meaney of McGill University. “And there are no environmental factors that function independently of our genes. They work alongside each other.” How does this view of the role of genes change our understanding of individual talent and abilities? Does it now mean that genes don't matter, and that we all have the potential to be like, say, Franz Beckenbauer or LeBron James? Such a claim flies in the face of reason. The genes we inherit clearly matter, as do genetic differences between individuals. But it is also true that Franz Beckenbauer would not have become a super footballer, nor LeBron James a basketball superstar, without putting in thousands of hours of practice. They could have turned out to be entirely different people. Talent researcher Kevin Rathunde agrees. “High academic achievers are not necessarily born much smarter than others but genes do count,” he writes in his book Talented Teenagers, “and above all they usually work harder and develop more self-discipline.” 28.What did Ted Williams think led to his success? A.His natural talent. B.His full commitment. C.His modest personality. D.His extraordinary intelligence. 29.What did we widely believe during the 20th century? A.Intelligence has little to do with DNA. B.Our genes interact with our environment. C.The majority of us are of average intelligence. D.Our character is simply decided by inherited DNA. 30.Why does the author mention“Franz Beckenbauer” and“LeBron James” in Paragraph 3? A.To clarify a point. B.To illustrate a rule. C.To offer a solution. D.To make a prediction. 31.Which statement will Kevin Rathunde probably agree with? A.Most of us are born to be average people. B.We could all be geniuses if working hard enough. C.Genetic factors are more important than hard work. D.Great talent is a combination of genes and practice. D One day, an anti-cancer agent could be a cell with specially equipped powerful balloons that pop when placed near an ultrasound beam(超声束)—killing surrounding cancer cells in its wake. The key to this operation is tiny protein bubbles. If a microbe(微生物) wishes to rise to the surface, it can create a few bubbles, making its body more flowing and pushing it upwards. If it wishes to drop, it can pop a few bubbles and do the opposite. The study's authors wondered if they could use the shock waves from those bubbles to work against tumors(肿瘤). First, the researchers had to test bubbles' explosive capabilities. They placed them in a Petri dish. After they attacked the dish with ultrasound, in a matter of mere seconds, they identified signs of widespread damage that showed the bubbles were responsible. Then, the researchers tested the process in living, cancer-stricken mice. The researchers put E.coli bacteria in to let the microbes create bubbles. After letting the bacteria circulate for five days, they turned on the ultrasound. By that time, the researchers found that those bacteria had settled deep inside the tumors. Nearly two weeks after the ultrasound treatment, tumors that had been broken grew more slowly than those that hadn't. And the mice that had received the bubble treatment survived, on average, more than twice as long as their counterparts(对应的人或物). “After decades, I just haven't seen that come to fruition,” says Mark Borden, a biomedical engineer at the University of Colorado. Of course, making this research work in the lab is one challenge. They need to ensure that putting bubble-containing microbes into a human body won't end up striking the immune system, and that they won't cause damage to tissues outside the tumor. So, they'd need to further test the way on animals. But, if it does work out, it could add to the ever-growing toolbox that can be used against the threat of cancer. “It's an attractive technology and I think it has a lot of potential,” says Borden. 32.What can the bubbles made by a microbe do? A.Increase the microbe's size. B.Drive the microbe to move upwards. C.Remove shock waves from the microbe. D.Protect the microbe from being damaged. 33.What happened to the cancer-stricken mice after they received the bubble treatment? A.The tumors totally disappeared. B.They showed signs of suffering. C.They had a big chance of survival. D.The tumors changed their appearance. 34.What is the researchers' concern about the bubble treatment? A.It might cost a lot of money. B.It might face technological problems. C.It might do great harm to animals' health. D.It might cause safety problems in humans. 35.What is the main idea of the text? A.Microbe bubbles may damage cancer cells. B.Microbe bubbles may have a lot of functions. C.Microbe bubbles may protect humans' immune system. D.We may prevent cancer cells producing bubbles. Science shows that stretching (拉伸) is essential after exercise. Stretching lengthens and mobilizes the connective tissue around your muscle. What's more, stretching helps your blood flow and even relieves your stress. 36      You could feel sick. You won't be surprised to know that when you exercise, you raise your heart rate for a period of time. While it's great to get your blood flowing, it's just as important to get your heart rate back to a normal level after the workout is over. 37 As your heart is beating faster and your body temperature is higher, you could pass out or feel sick if you stop too fast. Stretching after physical activity allows a gradual decrease at the end of the episode.    Your muscles will likely become stiffer and sorer. When you exercise your muscles, they produce lactic acid (乳酸), which is actually what causes your muscles to become sore. When you rest between periods of exercise, your body naturally breaks down that lactic acid. One thing that helps your body get rid of that lactic acid? 38 Stretching helps you distribute oxygen throughout your body, which can reduce lactic acid production and rid your muscles of any accumulation of lactic acid.     39 Flexibility is closely related to injury risk. Poor flexibility will cause you to have muscles that get tired quicker and joints that are more likely to suffer from injury. Besides, your weakened range of motion will lead to less blood and fewer nutrients of your joints. 40 Sticking to stretching exercise after physical activity can hopefully improve your flexibility.  A.You'll be at risk of injury. B.You guessed it: stretching. C.You'll improve your flexibility by stretching. D.It does wonders for both your physical and mental health. E.This is also known in the fitness world as “cooling down”. F.There will be side effects if you don't stretch after exercise. G.That's why people often feel pain in their weight-bearing joints like knees and hips. 36. 37. 38. 39. 40. Enya had such severe anxiety that she was unable to eat for fear of choking. Like any parent she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked, “Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do in your life?” “Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.” Mom smiled back and said, “Let's see if we can make your wish come true.” Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around the block in a fire engine. Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that. If you have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us and go out on all the fire calls. And if you can give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat—not a toy one—with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast.” Three days later fireman Bob picked up Billy and dressed him in his fire uniform. 故选A项。 故选A。
