教学过程
1. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Show students some pictures of extreme sports like skateboarding and surfing on the PPT, and ask: “What can you see in these pictures? Have you ever tried these sports? Do you think they are exciting?” Encourage students to share their opinions briefly.
Then play a short video about different unique hobbies around the world, and ask students to list the hobbies they see in the video. This can arouse students’ interest in the topic of hobbies and quickly draw their attention to the class.
2. New Knowledge Presentation (15 minutes)
Vocabulary teaching:
Present new words and phrases related to hobbies on the PPT, along with pictures. For example, show a picture of a person skateboarding and teach the word “skateboarding”. Explain the pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of each word. Let students read the words after the teacher several times.
Use some simple sentences to illustrate the usage of new phrases. For example, “I am crazy about photography. I often take pictures of beautiful scenery.” Let students make their own sentences with these phrases and share them with the class.
Sentence pattern teaching:
Write some key sentence patterns on the blackboard, such as “My favorite hobby is + noun/verb - ing.” and “I am crazy about + noun/verb - ing.” Explain the structure and usage of these sentence patterns.
Ask students to make sentences according to their own hobbies using these sentence patterns. Invite several students to stand up and share their sentences with the whole class. The teacher gives timely feedback and corrections.
3. Reading Comprehension (10 minutes)
Provide students with a short passage about a person’s special hobby (for example, a person who collects old keys). Let students read the passage quickly for the first time and answer the question: “What is the main idea of this passage? What is the person’s hobby?”
Then, ask students to read the passage carefully again and answer some detailed questions, such as “Why does he/she like this hobby? How does he/she collect old keys?” After that, let students work in pairs to summarize the key information of the passage.
Explain some difficult sentences and new vocabulary in the passage. For example, if there is a sentence “He has been pursuing this hobby for years.”, explain the meaning and usage of “pursue” here.
4. Group Discussion (10 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. Give each group a topic related to hobbies, such as “The most popular hobbies among teenagers in China and Western countries” or “How hobbies can change a person’s life”.
Each group starts to discuss the topic. Encourage students to express their own opinions and support their views with examples. The teacher walks around the classroom, listening to students’ discussions and providing necessary guidance and help.
After the discussion, each group selects a representative to report the group’s discussion results to the whole class. Other groups can ask questions and make comments.
5. Summary (5 minutes)
Review the new vocabulary, sentence patterns, and key points of reading comprehension with students. Write the key words and phrases on the blackboard again and ask students to read them aloud.
Summarize the main points of students’ group discussions, emphasizing the importance of hobbies in our lives and the cultural differences in hobbies.
Encourage students to keep exploring their hobbies and use English to communicate about them in their daily lives.
6. Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Ask students to write a passage about their ideal hobby. They need to describe what this hobby is, why they want to take it up, and how they will develop this hobby in the future. The passage should be at least 80 words.
Suggest students to interview one of their family members about their hobbies and record the interview in English. They can use the sentence patterns and vocabulary learned in class.
教学反思
Positive aspects:
Through various teaching methods such as multimedia presentation, group discussion, and reading activities, students showed high enthusiasm in class. Most students actively participated in the discussion and were able to use the learned vocabulary and sentence patterns to express their ideas about hobbies.
The reading comprehension activity effectively improved students’ reading skills, and they could understand and summarize the main information of the text better than before.
Areas for improvement:
Some students still made mistakes in using the third - person singular form of verbs in the simple present tense when describing others’ hobbies. In future teaching, more targeted exercises and explanations are needed.
During the group discussion, a few students were relatively passive and did not actively contribute their ideas. In the future, more attention should be paid to these students to encourage their participation and provide more guidance.
Regarding the cultivation of cross - cultural awareness, although some cultural differences in hobbies were mentioned, it was not deep enough. In the next class, more in - depth exploration of cultural connotations related to hobbies can be carried out through more examples and case studies.
