Unit 2 School life-Further study
This unit, “School life” of Yilin English Textbook (2024) for Grade 8, focuses on school life themes. It includes various aspects such as school facilities, subjects, extracurricular activities, and the differences between British and American schools. Through reading materials, students will learn about the experiences of different students in their school lives, and through listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises, they will be able to describe their own school lives, compare school life in different regions, and express their opinions and feelings about school life. The unit is designed to enhance students' language skills while also promoting their understanding of different educational cultures.
教学目标

教学过程
1. Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of different school scenes, such as classrooms, playgrounds, libraries, etc., and ask students to describe what they see in simple English. For example, “There is a big playground in the school.” “I can see many students reading in the library.” This activity can quickly engage students in the topic of school life and review some basic vocabulary related to school facilities.
2. Lead-in (5 minutes)
Ask students, “What’s your school life like?” Encourage them to share some aspects of their daily school life, like the subjects they like, the activities they do after class, etc. Then introduce the topic of this unit - different school lives around the world. Show a short video about school life in a foreign country (e.g., a British or American school) to arouse students' interest in learning about the differences in school life.
3. Knowledge Presentation (12 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching: Present the new words and phrases related to school life on the PPT. Explain the meaning, pronunciation, and usage of each word or phrase. For example, when teaching “mixed school,” show pictures of boys and girls studying together in the same classroom and explain that it means a school where both boys and girls study. For phrases like “borrow... from...,” give examples: “I borrow books from the library every week.” Let students read the words and phrases aloud several times to practice pronunciation.
Grammar Explanation: Use some simple examples on the blackboard to introduce the comparative and superlative forms for comparing the quantity of things. For countable nouns, write “I have 5 apples. Tom has 3 apples. I have more apples than Tom. He has the fewest apples in our group.” For uncountable nouns, write “I have little milk. She has less milk than me. He has the least milk among us.” Explain the rules clearly and let students observe and find the patterns.
4. Practice (15 minutes)
Listening Practice: Play a short dialogue about two students comparing their school lives on the recorder. Students listen carefully and then answer some questions on the PPT, such as “Who has more subjects?” “Who has fewer after - school activities?” This can help students practice listening for specific information related to the grammar points they just learned.
Speaking Practice: Divide students into pairs. Each pair gets a set of cards with different school - life - related situations (e.g., one card says “Student A has 10 books, Student B has 7 books”). Students need to make conversations using comparative and superlative forms according to the information on the cards. For example, “Student A: I have more books than you. Student B: Yes, and you have the most books among our classmates.” Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary.
Reading Practice: Give students a short passage about a student's school life. Ask them to read it quickly and find out the key information, such as the subjects the student studies, the activities the student participates in, and make comparisons based on the content. For example, “The student says he has more homework in math than in English.” Then let students answer some comprehension questions.
5. Summary and Homework Assignment (8 minutes)
Summary: Summarize the key points of this class with students, including the new vocabulary, grammar rules, and the main content of the reading and listening materials. Ask students to recall and repeat the important knowledge points.
Homework Assignment:
Ask students to write a short passage about their own school life, using at least three comparative or superlative sentences.
Let students collect some information about school life in another country (either through the Internet or books) and be ready to share it in the next class.
教学反思
After this class, I need to reflect on several aspects. Firstly, in terms of vocabulary and grammar teaching, did students really understand the new words and the complex grammar rules of comparative and superlative forms? From the practice activities, it seemed that some students still had confusion when using “fewer” and “less” correctly. Maybe I should have provided more vivid examples and more time for students to practice these grammar points. Secondly, during the speaking practice, some students were a bit shy and not very active. I need to think about how to create a more relaxed and encouraging atmosphere to make every student willing to participate in speaking activities. Thirdly, for the reading practice, some students had difficulty in quickly extracting key information. In future classes, I should strengthen the training of reading skills, such as skimming and scanning. Overall, this teaching process has both successes and areas that need improvement, and I will adjust my teaching methods and strategies accordingly in the next class.
