She asks it at nursing homes. Even more amazing, she then sets out to make the residents’ (住户) wishes come true. Ruby Kate has long been close to older folks. Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, is a nurse who works at nursing homes in northwest Arkansas, and Ruby Kate often stays with her in the summer. Last May, Ruby Kate noticed a resident named Pearl staring out a window. She seemed sad. “What are you looking at?” Ruby Kate asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner after a visit. Pearl didn’t know when she would see her dog again. Ruby Kate and Amanda asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn’t allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after hers. So Ruby Kate decided to do something. Amanda began her project by asking residents to name the three things they wanted most in life. “This way seems easier than asking, ’What do you want?’” she explained. “It helps people communicate their needs more clearly.” At first she worried that people might request cars and other things an 11-year-old wouldn’t be able to provide. Instead, they expressed hopes to receive chocolate bars, pants that fit properly, and even wanted someone to talk to. “It broke me,” Amanda says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many items as we could.” They granted the wishes of about 100 people in three months. Then they started asking for donations. The good people of Harrison responded enthusiastically, so much so that Amanda set up a GoFundMe page, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents, hoping to collect $5,000, which was realized in a month. Then it became a nonprofit and planned to start its first nationwide donation. Ruby Kate doesn’t plan to stop there. “I consider kindness to be my hobby,” she says, “and I’m very good at it.” By making kindness a part of life, she shows that even small acts can bring big happiness. 1.Why did Ruby ask nursing home residents what they wanted most? A.To satisfy her own curiosity. B.To show her sympathy to them. C.To help them realize their wishes. D.To check on their living conditions. 2.How did Ruby get the idea to ask residents the question? A.By working together with her mother. B.By noticing what happened to a resident. C.By helping a resident get back her dog. D.By living with older folks for a long time. 3.What shocked Amanda after she got the answers from the residents? A.They just asked for some simple items. B.What they needed were some luxuries. C.What they wanted were beyond her reach. D.They were poorly treated in the nursing home. 4.What does the underlined word “granted” in Paragraph 5 mean? A.Ignored. B.Promised. C.Met. D.Denied. 5.How does Ruby Kate view kindness? A.As a passion she is skilled at. B.As a task adults should finish. C.As a duty she performed. D.As a game kids love playing. 三、信息还原。 Whether you're a child, teenager, young adult or are middle-aged, respect for your parents is an important value. Your parents are the people who raised you, devoting time, energy and money to your development. 1 No matter your age is, there are 4 ways to show respect. ●Respect their belongings. One important way to show respect is to show regard for the things important to your parents. For younger children, this may mean not touching jewelry or other valuable things. For grown children, respect may mean returning a borrowed tool in good condition and on time. Lack of respect for a parent's belongings is a violation of personal boundaries. 2 — And never borrow things without asking first. ●Punctuality. 3 Therefore, always be on time. For teenagers, showing up on time means coming home by curfew(宵禁). Adult children should show up on time for family dinners or events, or to pick a parent up for a medical appointment. Call if you're going to be late because parents worry about children, no matter their age is. ● 4 . Remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other special days is a sign that you honor your parents. Make plans to take them to lunch or dinner or bake a cake or cookies. Most parents don't expect expensive gifts, but a handmade gift is always appreciated. A phone call from a grown child who lives too far for a visit is a welcome sign of respect. ●Be kind. Kind words and affection are simple ways to show respect. Tell your parents you love them. Listen and allow your parents to speak without interruption. Show a sincere interest in what your parents have to say. Be patient with your parents and don't rush them. Never talk back or be rude or disrespectful. Acknowledge your parents' achievements. 5 A.Celebrate with them. B.Be a good listener. C.Don't take advantage of your parents' kindness and generosity. D.Treat your parents the way you would like to be treated. E.Being respectful helps build positive relationships with others. F.And they love you unconditionally throughout your life. G.Lateness indicates a lack of respect. 四、语法填空。 Generally speaking, in American high schools and colleges, the last day of the school year is Graduation Day. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father’s car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at. On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging. As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex’s water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.
