I knew that I was ready to have a great day,’ she said.” 故选A。 27. 28. Bathed in sunshine, our class competed fiercely against Class 3, with the audience cheering wildly. The moment the referee blew the whistle, both teams tried to pull back as hard as they could. Although we won the first round, the other team didn’t lose heart and won the second round. The competition was filled with excitement and fun, ending in a draw. Not only did the competition help relieve our pressure from the heavy academic load, but it also strengthened our relationship with others. Paragraph 1: “There’s a big food festival downtown today, and we got you a stand.” Jacob said. “Why not go there and give it a shot?” He continued to ask the kids, who could barely contain their excitement and jumped up with wide joy. “Yes, officers!” they exclaimed, a big smile broadening from ear to ear. It was not long before all the lemonade was gathered. The officers soon set up the lemonade stand and uploaded a post introducing their experience, which went viral and caused quite a stir in the neighbourhood. Grandma and the two kids were surprised to see their stand packed solid with people attracted by lemonade. Paragraph 2: There was a large crowd eager to buy lemonade. By the end of that day, the children were shocked to see that apart from the money raised, they also received loads of cards with warm and encouraging words. Grandma took the cards with trembling hands, cradling them in arms with tears brimming in her eyes. As soon as their mom was discharged from the hospital, they visited the police station and thanked the officers for their generosity and kindness. John and Nancy hugged Jacob tightly, knowing that they would never forget what they had been through and would cherish the love for good. Text 1 M: What do you like to watch on TV? W: I love quiz shows and talk shows. What about you? M: I like nature movies and situation comedies. W: I’m glad you don’t like watching documentaries. Text 2 M: I’m going out to lunch. Do you need anything while I’m out? W: Yes, if you pass a convenience store, get me some chocolate — a Snickers bar, please. Text 3 W: What are you going to do tomorrow? M: It depends. If it’s fine, I’ll go fishing. And if it rains, I’ll stay indoors and do some writing. What about you? W: I am not sure yet. Text 4 M: What time do you think would be OK for us to watch the match? W: How about 7:00? M: Can we make it 30 minutes later? Because I have a meeting at 7:00. The match begins at 8:00. W: No problem. Text 5 M: Where to, Miss? W: Please drop me off at the King’s Department Store. M: On the west side? W: No, the east side, near the post office. Text 6 M: Sarah, did you remember to go to the market on the way? W: Oh no, I forgot. But why do I need to go again? M: To get one of those old Rock-Clock records for Fred’s birthday. W: OK, I bet I’ll get lost trying to find the market. M: Well, you need to walk past Causeway Inn to the bus stop, catch the bus to Notting-Hill station and then the train to South City. It should take about an hour this time of day. W: OK, but here’s one small problem. Where’s Causeway Inn? M: Oh Sarah! Don’t you know anything? The Causeway Inn is about 100 meters down this street. W: Oh, good! That should be easy to find. Thanks. I’ll be back soon. Text 7 W: Hi, Jack. How was your vacation? M: Hey, Sunny. It was pretty good. I had to study a lot, though. W: Why? Did your teachers give you a lot of summer homework? M: No, it’s not that. Ms. Wellington is going to be one of my teachers this year. W: I’ve never been in her class. Is she tough? M: Tough? She’s one of the strictest teachers in our school. W: How do you know? M: I had one of her classes last year. She gave us so much work that it was really hard to get it all done. W: So were you studying over the vacation to get a head start? M: That’s exactly right. I just hope I did enough. Text 8 M: I’d like to add some Chinese traditional styles in the decoration of my new house. W: That’s great! I like this style very much. And I think if you want to show the Chinese style, you should use the red color. It is the most representative color in China, and sometimes it is called “Chinese Red”. M: Oh, yes, I agree with you. And as for the door and the windows, I also like to use lattice. I think it is the most important style of Chinese decorating. W: Yes. I think you have a good understanding of the Chinese style. And I suggest you’d better hang two Chinese landscape paintings. M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I will buy them in the afternoon. And I’d like to paint the walls again and buy a new sofa. W: What color do you want to paint? M: I don’t know exactly, but I’d like to use fresh colors. I think these colors look vivid. Text 9 W: Why don’t you sit down? Now, there are several questions I must ask you if you don’t mind. M: Not at all. Go ahead. W: What is the purpose of your visit to the States? M: I’m going to attend a conference on air pollution. W: When and where is this conference being held? M: It’s being held in the first two weeks of February at the University of Stanford in California. W: Who will pay your expenses? M: The University of Stanford. Here is the official letter of invitation. W: I see. Fine. When do you want to go? M: I’d like to leave on January 15th if my passport is ready by then. W: That shouldn’t be difficult. Why don’t you phone me around January 10th? I should be able to give you an answer then. M: Thank you. Text 10 M: OK. Good morning, everyone. Now I’m going to talk about technology and learning. First of all, let’s talk about the Internet. There are several ways you can use to improve your English. You can read, listen and write. Firstly, writing practice is good for your learning. On the Internet there are two places where you can write — message boards and live chat rooms. Live chat rooms are great for improving your fluency, because you have to write quickly. People don’t want to wait too long to hear your response. A message board is good for both fluency and accuracy because you can think and prepare before you write. Also, the Internet is a good place to practice your listening. The Internet may be better than the radio as you can listen again and again. You should visit a good news site, such as the BBC. BBC radio is an incredible resource. The ability to listen repeatedly, and to pause, allows you to put into practice the advice I gave in the reading and listening skills section. In order to improve your listening, you have to be an active listener: make notes; try to write down the main points and new vocabulary. Finally, visit the website for the textbook. There are extra practice exercises and reading materials. It also offers learners special message boards. OK. That’s all for today. Thank you for listening. 1. Just 18 months after giving birth to her daughter, Skylar, the professional triathlete won the intense competition. The IRONMAN World Championship required contestants to complete a difficult race — a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. A resident in Reno, Nevada told Fox News Digital, “The IRONMAN World Championship is the most important part of our sport. All the best athletes show up ready to throw down”. Sodaro, shockingly, had only ever completed one IRONMAN prior to the World Championship — in June 2022. With just one other full IRONMAN finished, Chelsea Sodaro had to train hard for the championship. The preparation for a race like this can range depending on the competitor, but for Sodaro, preparation was the key to her massive success. The triathlete trains roughly 25–30 hours a week across all areas of the race: swimming, biking and running. Training athletes like her also tend to lift weights and gain muscle to help them succeed in the race. However, this particular competition proved to be a challenge beyond the physical training aspect. Sodaro said the Big Island of Hawaii had unique climate conditions that required additional training on her part. But during the days leading up to the race day, Sodaro said she was very nervous. But she said that right before the race began, she felt a sense of peace. “I poured so much into my work, and my family made a lot of sacrifices to get me to the start line in one piece. I knew that I was ready to have a great day,” she said. So how did Sodaro make it to the finish line first? She said she stayed focused and didn’t panic when things went wrong. Sodaro crossed the finish line at 8:33:46. That made her the first rookie (新选手) to win the IRONMAN World Champion in 15 years and the first American in over 25 years. 24. What does the underlined phrase “throw down” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Beat others. B. Take up challenges. C. Create history. D. Get pleasure. 25. Why did Chelsea Sodaro win a big success in the race? A. She is good at various sports. B. Her preparation had gone well. C. She is an experienced competitor. D. The local residents gave her support. 26. How did Chelsea Sodaro respond to stress before the race? A. By encouraging herself. B. By giving herself a short break. C. By talking with her family. D. By adding more physical training. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. The Best IRONMAN Races in Kailua-Kona B. Female Athlete Returns After Having a Baby C. Chelsea Sodaro Crossed the Finish Line D. New Mom Wins IRONMAN Championship C Scientists of the University of Chicago have discovered a way to create a material that can be made like a plastic, but conducts electricity more like a metal. The research, published in Nature, shows how to make a kind of material in which the molecular (分子) pieces are disordered, but can still conduct electricity extremely well. This goes against all of the rules we know about conductivity — to a scientist, it’s kind of seeing a car driving on water and still going 70 mph. The finding could be extraordinarily useful; if you want to invent something revolutionary, the process often first starts with discovering a completely new material. To the scientists’ astonishment, the material easily and strongly conducted electricity. What’s more, it was very stable. “We heated it, cooled it, exposed it to air and in a wet environment, and even dropped acid and alkali (酸和碱) on it, and nothing happened,” said Xie, the first author on the paper. That is enormously helpful for a device that has to function in the real world. But to the scientists, the most striking thing was that the molecular structure of the material was disordered. “From a fundamental picture, that should not be able to be a metal,” said Anderson, the senior author on the study. “There isn’t a solid theory to explain this.” One of the material’s attractive characteristics is that it has new options for processing. For example, metals usually have to be melted in order to be made into the right shape for a chip or device, which limits what you can make with them, since other components of the device have to be able to withstand (承受) the heat needed to process these materials. The new material has no such limitation because it can be made at room temperatures. It can still be used where the need for a device or pieces of the device to withstand heat, acid or alkali, or a wet environment has previously limited engineers’ options to develop new technology. 28. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1? A. Introduce the object to be explained. B. Provide an example to analyze. C. Offer some background information. D. Make necessary comparisons for the readers. 29. Why is a car driving on water mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To stress the character of the car. B. To show the difficulty of the process. C. To explain the importance of speed. D. To highlight the creativity of the finding. 30. What made scientists amazed most about the material? A. Stable function. B. Easy conduction. C. Structural disorder. D. Flexible processing. 31. What is the author’s attitude towards the new material? A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Neutral. D. Negative. D Who says that being roommates with someone from a completely different generation has to be strange? Lately, more and more Americans are becoming intergenerational (代际的) roommates, and they’re changing the way people think they should be living. Explained as those that are separated by at least one generation living together, there has been a major increase in intergenerational roommate arrangements (安排) within the United States since 1971. In fact, statistics show that this number has actually quadrupled (增长四倍) since then. In a Pew Research Center article, it shared that by March 2021, there were at least 59.7 million Americans that had many generations living under one roof. There are a ton of reasons that come into play for these types of arrangements. For some, it’s because of the increase in the average life-expectancy age (平均预期寿命), a decreased birth rate, a rise in college tuition, the ever rising rentals in almost every coastal city, and more. But if anything, many say that one main reason behind the rise is that older people have space to rent out and that having younger people around just makes them happier. According to a 25-year-old robotics student living in Massachusetts, Nadia Abdullah, who moved in with her 64-year-old roommate Judith in 2019, “It was perfect — Judith has become like my family.” Their arrangement was $700 a month from Nadia, plus the promise of her doing some help around the house. This also allowed Nadia to live just 6 miles from Boston and 30 minutes from her robotics job located in Beverly Mass. Nadia was matched with Judith through website, a renting center specifically created to find intergenerational roommates. Another young renting center reviewer, Kaplan, also gave some opinions on the service and why it’s so special, saying, “Through this, I lived with Sarah while attending Harvard. She provided the type of knowledge you just can’t Google — showing me how to garden, how to cook fish, and add French Romanticism to life.” 32. How to google special knowledge. B. How to build a garden. C. How to fish. D. How to live a romantic life. 35. What can be concluded from Nadia and Kaplan’s experiences? A.
