Have you ever thought about what astronauts eat when they’re in space? What would they eat if they had to travel all the way to Mars (火星) ? A lot of the food astronauts eat is processed (加工过的) because it’s simple to eat and easy to take into space. However, some vitamins (维生素) can break down if the food is stored for a long time. People may have health problems if they eat processed food every day.
Growing fresh food in space might help astronauts stay healthy. It would also give them more food choices. Fresh vegetables grown on Earth have many nutrients (营养物质) that processed food do not have. However, we don’t know if vegetables grown in space are the same. Another worry is making sure that these vegetables don’t have the bacteria or fungi (细菌或真菌) that could make people sick.
Luckily, we have a plant growth room called Veggie on ISS (the International Space Station). We used Veggie to find out if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space.
We used Veggie to grow red lettuce (红生菜) over three years. We compared these (ISS-grown) vegetables to those grown at the same time on Earth. They were grown under the same conditions as on the ISS. We did research on the leaves and roots of all the lettuce plants. And we did not find any differences in nutrients between ISS-grown lettuce and Earth-grown produce. This means that it is possible to grow nutritious and safe food on ISS and astronauts should be able to eat vegetables grown in Veggie without worrying about getting sick.
Even though our lettuce is safe to eat, we still need to work out two problems. Firstly, there are more bacteria and fungi on ISS-grown lettuce. The wet environment in Veggie is probably the reason. Secondly, there are some differences in nutrients between the vegetables we grew in different years. Plants can change with too much or too little water, but it is hard to water plants in zero gravity (零重力) . Therefore, we need to make sure that growing environments are consistent in Veggie. Then astronauts can be confident about the nutrients in their food during their long stay in space.
32. The researchers grew red lettuce in Veggie to ______.
A. decide what kind of food astronauts should eat in space
B. find out how to keep astronauts safe and healthy in space
C. check if fresh vegetables can be processed safely in space
D. test if it’s possible to grow nutritious and safe food in space
33. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Earth-grown vegetables are safer and have more nutrients.
B. ISS-grown lettuce of different years has different nutrients.
C. Scientists wanted to understand nutrients in processed food.
D. Fewer bacteria and fungi were found on ISS-grown vegetables.
34. What do the underlined words “are consistent” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Stay unchanged. B. Become special. C. Stay comfortable. D. Become enjoyable.
35. The last paragraph suggests that ______.
A. Veggie plays an important part in astronauts’ healthy eating
B. astronauts need to keep the plant growth room dry and clean
C. researchers didn’t find out what food could be grown in space
D. scientists need to do further research on planting food in space
D
We’ve all been in conversations where we’ve known that the other person wasn’t really paying attention. According to the University of Missouri, 45% of communication is listening, and yet most people remember only 25% to 50% of the information they hear. Whether you’re in a classroom, a business setting, or a relationship, failing to hear 75% what’s said to you is sure to lead to big problems. Active listening helps solve them.
What is Active Listening?
It means more than listening to the words that are said. Instead, you think about what you hear, and try to find out the purpose, content, and emotion from the speaker. Active listening requires paying attention. If you’re watching TV or looking at your phone while someone is talking, you’re not actively listening.
The other side of active listening is making sure the other person knows that you’re doing so. Signs like eye contact and replying with insightful(有深刻见解)comments are important.
Why Active Listening Matters
Verbal(言语的)communication is very important in every part of life. Active listening can help you communicate better, reduce misunderstandings, and build more successful family or working relationships.
For example, family members often have bad listening habits. They don’t pay attention to what is said because they think they know what is coming next. They hear what they expect to hear, instead of what family members actually say. Active listening makes it possible to solve this problem.
Learning How to Listen
Active listening takes practice. Here are a few tips on improving your listening skills:
Pay attention! Put down your phone and make eye contact with the person talking to you. Make notes in mind about the speaker’s main point, as well as a few specific things they’re saying. Why are they telling you this? How does the speaker feel about what they’re saying? Don’t think about answering. Focus on what they want you to hear.
Show that you’re listening. The speaker can tell if you’re paying attention. Make eye contact, nod when you need to, and give small verbal comments like “yes” and “huh”. But don’t repeat something they’ve just said. This might seem like a good way to show that you’re listening, but it can derail(使脱轨)the conversation.
Offer feedback(反馈). When the opportunity comes up, you’ll be able to offer insightful feedback on what was said. This might take the form of reflecting on what was said, asking follow-up questions, of offering your own viewpoint. Active listening can avoid that deer-in-the-headlights feeling that can happen when someone asks, “What do you think?” If you’ve been actively listening, you’ll be ready to answer thoughtfully.
36. According to the passage, which one can he active listening?
A. Asking some questions before listening.
B. Listening to someone while watching TV.
C. Thinking about what you hear while listening.
D. Guessing what the speaker will say before listening.
37. Active listening is important because ______.
A. it changes people’s listening habits completely
B. it helps people to communicate with others better
C. it makes communication important in every part of life
D. It ensures people don’t make mistakes in business settings
38. What can we know from the passage?
A. Nodding often in the conversation can help you listen actively.
B. Asking follow-up questions is not as good as offering points of view.
C. Repeating what’s said by the speaker means you are an active listener.
D. Paying attention in the conversation means more than just listening to the words.
39. The underlined word “deer-in-the-headlights” probably means ______.
A. Not being able to see B. not being able to understand
C. not knowing how to react D. not knowing how to listen

The Surprising Benefits of Reading Aloud
Did your parents use to read a story to you at bedtime? Have you read anything aloud to your friends? When you recall those memories, do you feel a certain sense of closeness? For me, the answer is yes. After reading aloud, I also feel my reading is so attractive to audiences.
There are two common reading habits: reading silently and reading aloud. Personally, I prefer reading aloud. Last school year, I read aloud to some of my students. Soon I found they were fully involved in the story. When I read to them with vocal variety (声音变化) and emotion, students were able to understand the personality of characters.
Reading aloud allows others to hear the content (内容). It can improve our understanding of the text. This is why in ancient Iraq and Syria more than 4,000 years ago, reading meant “to cry out” or “to listen”.
Reading aloud can bring other benefits to us. According to research, reading aloud can help us to remember 10% more vocabulary than silent reading. If readers have speech difficulties and cannot fully remember the words they read aloud, reading aloud can help those readers to improve their memory. It was said that reading the words to another person resulted in the highest verbal (言语) memory recall. By contrast, reading silently produced the lowest verbal memory recall. Reading aloud can also help doctors to detect (测出) Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage if the reading includes specific mistakes.
Someone may ask: If there are so many benefits, why do we still read silently? According to a study on the effect of writing on the human brain and behaviours by Karenleigh Overmann, a professor at the University of Bergen, Norway, she discovered that silent reading keeps up with the speed of thought much better when people read while writing. Reading aloud will slow down the ability to read quickly because producing a sound needs more time.
Reading silently and reading aloud both have their own advantages and disadvantages. We can choose the suitable reading habit according to our different needs and situations.
40. What are the two common reading habits?

A. their B. your C. ours D. us
【答案】C
【解析】
【详解】句意:其他队很棒,但是我认为我们队是最好的。
考查代词词义辨析。their他们的,她们的,它们的,形容词性物主代词;your你的,你们的,形容词性物主代词;ours我们的,名词性物主代词;us我们,人称代词宾格。形容词性物主代词需要接名词,名词性物主代词后不需要接名词。因为该空后没有名词,所以该空应该填入名词性物主代词。和前面的“其他队”对应,此处指代“我们的队伍”。故选C。
2. — What’s your favorite animal, Peter?
— I like ______, because they are very cute.
A. penguin B. monkey C. sheep D. fox
【答案】C

— No,you__________,son.You’re free to make your own decision.
A. can’t B. mustn’t C. shouldn’t D. needn’t

Jim’s best friend, Ben, lived next door. Ben would always laugh at him. “Kissy Face! Kissy Face!”
Jim didn’t know what to do. He tried hiding when family came to visit. But his father always called him in to say hello. He tried wearing an old Halloween mask(面具), but his mother made him take it off so his grandmothers and aunts could see his “cute little face.” Jim even tried to make his face and hands sticky(黏糊的),but the grandmothers and aunts just wiped off the stickiness and kissed him even harder.
One day, Jim’s mother told him she had a wonderful surprise. There was going to be a new baby in the family. Jim was going to be a big brother. Jim listened but didn’t say anything. He wasn’t sure whether a baby was a wonderful surprise or not.
The big day finally came. Jim’s parents brought the new baby home. So the whole family held a big party but this time not for Jim. Soon the whole family arrived. Jim felt worried about being kissed. But the grandmothers and aunts didn’t look at Jim. They all went straight to the new baby and said, “Oh, you are just the cutest thing!” and kept kissing the baby’s face. Then one of the aunts came over to Jim. “Well, you’re a big brother now,” she said. Instead of kissing his face, she just patted his shoulder and smiled.

词句猜测题。根据“Therefore, we need to make sure that growing environments are consistent in Veggie. Then astronauts can be confident about the nutrients in their food during their long stay in space.”可知,只有确保蔬菜的生长环境是一致的,宇航员才能对食物中的营养成分充满信心,因此“are consistent”意为“Stay unchanged.”。故选A。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Even though our lettuce is safe to eat, we still need to work out two problems.”可知,还有一些问题要去解决,因此科学家还要进一步做研究,故选D。

Signs like eye contact and replying with insightful(有深刻见解的)comments are important.
【答案】36. C 37. B 38. D 39. C

【39题详解】
词义猜测题。根据最后一段“Active listening can avoid that deer-in-the-headlights feeling that can happen when someone asks, ‘What do you think?’ If you’ve been actively listening, you’ll be ready to answer thoughtfully.”可知,积极倾听可以避免当别人问“你怎么看?”时,产生的那种茫然失措的感觉。如果你一直在积极地倾听,你就会准备好周到地回答。可知“deer-in-headlights”意思是不知道怎么反应。故选C。
