The Power of Family Traditions
Family traditions shape our identity and strengthen bonds. Whether it’s a weekly game night or annual holiday rituals, these routines create lasting memories. For example, my family gathers every New Year’s Eve to cook dumplings and watch fireworks. This tradition reminds us of our shared history and love.
Traditions also pass down values. My grandmother’s recipe for apple pie isn’t just food—it’s a symbol of her patience and creativity. When I bake it with my children, I’m preserving her legacy while teaching them life skills.
Some traditions adapt to modern life. Instead of handwritten letters, my family uses a group chat to share daily updates. We still “meet” every Sunday evening, but now it’s virtual. This flexibility keeps our connection strong despite busy schedules.
ritual /ˈrɪtʃuəl/ n. 仪式
legacy /ˈleɡəsi/ n. 遗产
virtual /ˈvɜːrtʃuəl/ adj.
flexibility /ˌfleksəˈbɪləti/ n.
bond /bɒnd/ n.

(2012·湖北·高考真题D篇)How is it that siblings(兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differently? One answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in a different family. The firstborn is, for a while, an only child, and therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child is, for a while, the youngest, until the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother or an angry father.
Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recently, researchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’ lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one-on-one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters, learning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”.
A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love-hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.
One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblings, particularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two years, finding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.
63. The underlined part “in a different family” (in Para. 1) means “_______”.
A. in a different family environment
B. in a different family tradition
C. in different family crises
D. in different families
64. In terms of language development, later-borns ________.
A. get their parents’ individual guidance
B. learn a lot from their elder siblings
C. experience a lot of difficulties
D. pick up words more quickly
65. What was found about fights among siblings?
A. Siblings hated fighting and loved playing.
B. Siblings in some families fought frequently.
C. Sibling fights led to bad sibling relationships.
D. Siblings learned to get on together from fights.
66. The word “feminine” (in Para. 4) means “_______”.
A. having qualities of parents
B. having qualities of women
C. having defensive qualities
D. having extraordinary qualities
63. A
以及第一段最后一句中“…might live in a stable and close family in the first few years; another might be raised in a family crisis, with a disappointed mother and angry father.”(可能在最初几年生活在一个稳定和亲密的家庭;另一个可能是在家庭危机中长大的,有失望的母亲和愤怒的父亲。)
根据第二段最后一句话中“Later-borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parents, but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sister…”(晚出生的孩子不喜欢和父母聊天,相反,他们从哥哥姐姐那里学到很多东西)可知,后出生者更倾向于向兄弟姐妹学习,故B项正确。
65. D
根据第三段最后一句“Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much posistive communication as the other sibling pairs.”(即使是那些打架最频繁的兄弟姐妹也和其他兄弟姐妹有同样多的积极沟通。)
根据语境及本句中的“Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree ”(有兄弟的女孩表现出最大程度的差异)可知,妹的女孩更具有女性品质特征,因此,feminine意思为“具有女人的品质”。

Passage 1
(2025-2026学年山西省忻州市第一中学校高一上学期开学考试英语试题)After his father was rushed to hospital for an operation, 18-year-old Yanatha Desouvre began to panic. So he did the one thing he knew would calm himself down — writing.
“I’m so scared,” he started. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose my dad.” Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks writing about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad — the jokes they’d shared, the basketball games they’d watched and so on. Sometimes Desouvre cried as he wrote. Often he laughed. “Writing allowed me to face my fear and my pen was a tool to reduce the pain,” says Desouvre.
He is not alone. A lot of research shows benefits of writing about a painful experience or difficult situation in a manner that psychologists refer to as “expressive writing”. They say it can strengthen the immune (免疫) system, help reduce pain, and improve the mood, sleep and memory.
When asked about his first writing, Desouvre says it was when he was 12, he survived a car crash in Brooklyn. After it he had nightmares about it over the years, he started writing about it, and then kept going. It helped. He says, “You can’t keep things bottled up, and it will make you sick.”
Now he thinks of his expressive writing as a recording of what happened and what he’s learned. He always starts with “the tough stuff ” and then writes about how he’s grown from the experience. Last year, he wrote in a notebook, recording the stress of his study. But he’s also written about what he has gained: being stronger. “My expressive writing gave me the courage to face my fears,” Desouvre says. “And I believe it has helped me discover the hope I need to heal.”
1. What happened to Desouvre when his father was sent to hospital?
A. He was so frightened that he did nothing.
B. He watched a basketball game with his father.
C. He called his mother to tell his father’s illness.
D. He recorded something to free himself from anxiety.
2. What benefit can a person get from expressive writing?
A. A moody state. B. A good manner.
C. A better memory. D. A pain-free life.
3. Why did Desouvre begin his first writing?
A. To recover from a traffic accident.
B. To become a famous writer.
C. To keep his secret of being sick.
D. To get rid of a terrible experience.
4. What does Desouvre regard expressive writing as?
A. A recording of gains and losses.
B. A willingness to become stronger.
C. A great tool to deal with difficult problems.
D. A good way to react properly to an accident.
D 2. C 3. D 4. A
根据第二段中的““I’m so scared,” he started. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose my dad.” Over the next few weeks, Desouvre filled several notebooks writing about his worry as well as his happy memories with his dad — the jokes they’d shared, the basketball games they’d watched and so on.(‘我太害怕了,’他开始写道。‘如果失去爸爸,我不知道该怎么办。’在接下来的几周里,Desouvre写满了几本笔记本,记录下他的担忧以及和爸爸在一起的快乐回忆——他们分享过的笑话、一起看过的篮球赛等等。)”和““Writing allowed me to face my fear and my pen was a tool to reduce the pain,” says Desouvre. (‘写作让我得以直面内心的恐惧,而我的笔,就是缓解这份痛苦的工具。’Desouvre说道。)”可知,Desouvre在父亲被送进医院时,通过记录一些内容来缓解自己的焦虑。故选D项。
2. 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“They say it can strengthen the immune (免疫) system, help reduce pain, and improve the mood, sleep and memory.(他们表示,这种写作方式可以增强免疫系统,帮助减轻疼痛,改善情绪、睡眠和记忆力。)”
根据第四段中的“When asked about his first writing, Desouvre says it was when he was 12, he survived a car crash in Brooklyn. After it he had nightmares about it over the years, he started writing about it, and then kept going. It helped.(当被问及他的第一次写作时,Desouvre说那是在他12岁的时候,他在布鲁克林的一场车祸中幸存下来。在那之后的几年里,他一直做关于那场车祸的噩梦,于是他开始写关于车祸的事情,并且一直写下去。这很有帮助。)”可知,Desouvre开始第一次写作是为了摆脱一段可怕的经历(车祸带来的噩梦困扰)。故选D项。
4. 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Now he thinks of his expressive writing as a recording of what happened and what he’s learned. He always starts with “the tough stuff ” and then writes about how he’s grown from the experience.(现在,他把自己的表达性写作看作是对所发生事情和所学知识的一种记录。他总是从‘艰难的事情’开始写,然后写下自己从这段经历中成长了多少。)”以及后文提到的记录学习压力和从中获得的成长可知,Desouvre将表达性写作视为对得失的一种记录。故选A项。
Passage 2
(2024-2025学年安徽省亳州市第一中学高一上学期11月考试英语试题A卷)Last night, I found my mother sit with her legs crossed on the sofa, looking through her iPhone with her glasses. This is not the first time I have caught her like this. My father once tapped away on his phone with a serious look on his face, saying the “I’ll be with you shortly” line. I have learned by now that this is to tell me to leave him alone for the next 10 minutes. Although they don’t like admitting it, both of my parents couldn’t go without their phones as I do.
Growing up, we are repeatedly reminded that we are those who prefer to text our friends in the same room rather than make eye contact with them. We are ruining the English language because we like using heart-eyes emojis instead of spelling it out. And even though I can recognize myself as a social media addict, I think parents should at least consider that not only the young generation, but also they like phones.
I get upset when I receive the “I’ll be with you shortly” line from a parent. But at the same time, leaving the room to wait until my father is finished with his “serious business” has now become the norm.
Whether you want to escape your noisy children for a while, or want to stay up late tapping through Twitter, all of these are common. But you should fully understand it. We-your children-know how addictive it can be and how difficult it is to turn it off. So before calling us out and telling us to “put our phones away at the table” or even worse, saying how damaging social media can be to us, maybe you should lead by example and consider how much time you spend on the phone as well as how this is influencing your children and your relationship with them. Maybe in this way we can work on our addiction together.
5. What can we learn about the author’s parents?
A. They’ve been forced to use phones by him. B. They become addicted to phones like him.
C. They like buying their phones online at home. D. They often communicate with him by phone.
6. What is the young generation’s weakness according to Paragraph 2?
A. Giving up ways of communicating directly. B. Failing to express themselves in a right way.
C. Getting angry easily when facing their parents. D. Having fewer chances to learn social skills.
7. What does the underlined word “norm” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Formal tradition. B. Accepted behavior.
C. Unexpected decision. D. Unforgettable experience.
8. What advice is given to parents in the last paragraph?
A. Putting the phones away at the table. B. Taking more time to stay with children.
C. Setting a good example in front of children. D. Having good communication with children.
B 6. A 7. B 8. C
根据第一段“Although they don’t like admitting it, both of my parents couldn’t go without their phones as I do.(尽管他们不愿承认,但我的父母就像我一样,都无法离得开他们的手机)”可知,作者的父母像他一样对手机上瘾。故选B。
根据第二段“Growing up, we are repeatedly reminded that we are those who prefer to text our friends in the same room rather than make eye contact with them. We are ruining the English language because we like using heart-eyes emojis instead of spelling it out.(在成长过程中,我们不断被提醒:我们就是那种宁愿给同室好友发短信,也不愿与他们进行眼神交流的人。我们正在破坏英语语言的本来面貌,因为我们喜欢使用“心形眼”表情符号来代替直接书写“爱”这个词)”可推断,年轻一代的弱点是放弃了直接交流的方式。故选A。
根据第三段“I get upset when I receive the “I’ll be with you shortly” line from a parent. But at the same time, leaving the room to wait until my father is finished with his “serious business” has now become the norm.(当我收到家长发来的“我很快就会和你在一起(陪你)”的短信时,我很沮丧。但与此同时,离开房间等到我父亲完成他的“严肃事务”已经成为norm。)”和下文“Whether you want to escape your noisy children for a while, or want to stay up late tapping through Twitter, all of these are common. But you should fully understand it.(无论你是想暂时摆脱吵闹的孩子,还是想熬夜浏览推特,所有这些都很常见。但你应该完全理解它。)”可知,孩子离开房间等待父亲处理完他的‘重要事’,如今已变成了很常见的事情,并且应该完全理解。故划线词词义与B项“可接受行为”意思相近。故选B。
8. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“So before calling us out and telling us to “put our phones away at the table” or even worse, saying how damaging social media can be to us, maybe you should lead by example and consider how much time you spend on the phone as well as how this is influencing your children and your relationship with them. Maybe in this way we can work on our addiction together.(所以,在指责我们并要求我们“在餐桌上把手机收起来”甚至更过分地说出社交媒体对我们有多有害之前,或许你应该以身作则,思考一下自己使用手机的时间有多长,以及这如何影响到了你的孩子以及你与他们的关系。也许这样我们就能一起努力克服对手机的依赖了)”可知,最后一段给出的建议是在孩子面前要表现好,以身作则。故选C。
Passage 3
(2024-2025学年河南省驻马店市驿城区驻马店名校联盟高一下学期开学英语试题)Every Saturday morning, my family and I go to the local market. The market is in the center of town, and it’s always busy with people. There are many stalls selling all kinds of things: fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade bread, flowers, and even handcrafted toys. Going to the market is one of our favorite weekend traditions.
When we arrive at the market, the first thing I notice is the smell. There’s the sweet smell of fresh strawberries and ripe melons from the fruit stall, and the warm smell of bread from the bakery stall. My little sister, Mia, always runs to the flower stall first. She loves the colorful roses and sunflowers. The flower seller, Mrs. Lee, always gives her a small daisy to hold. Mia smiles so big that her eyes almost close.
My mom likes to go to the vegetable stall. She talks to the farmer, Mr. Chen, about which vegetables are fresh that day. He always lets her taste a cherry tomato or a piece of cucumber. “These are from my garden,” he says proudly. “I picked them this morning.” My mom fills her basket with carrots, broccoli, and lettuce. She says vegetables from the market taste better than those from the supermarket because they’re so fresh.
My dad goes straight to the bread stall. He buys a big loaf of whole-grain bread and some cinnamon rolls for breakfast. The baker, Mr. Johnson, knows my dad’s order by heart. “The usual?” he asks, and dad nods with a smile. I like to go to the toy stall. The toys are made by local craftsmen, and they’re very unique. Last week, I bought a small wooden car that I’ve been playing with every day.
After we’ve finished shopping, we usually stop at a small café near the market. We sit outside and drink juice while Mia plays with her daisy. Mom looks at our bags full of food and says, “We’ll have a delicious dinner tonight.” I love our trips to the market because they’re a time for our family to be together, and I always feel happy when we’re there.
9. When do the writer’s family go to the market?
A. Every Friday morning. B. Every Saturday morning.
C. Every Sunday afternoon. D. Every Monday evening.
10. What does Mia love to do at the market?
A. Taste fresh vegetables. B. Buy wooden toys.
C. Look at flowers. D. Eat cinnamon rolls.
11. Who sells vegetables at the market?
A. Mrs. Lee. B. Mr. Chen. C. Mr. Johnson. D. A local craftsman.
12. What does the writer’s dad usually buy?
A. Fresh fruits. B. A loaf of bread and cinnamon rolls.
C. Handcrafted toys. D. Flowers.

根据第三段中“My mom likes to go to the vegetable stall. She talks to the farmer, Mr. Chen, about which vegetables are fresh that day. He always lets her taste a cherry tomato or a piece of cucumber. (我妈妈喜欢去蔬菜摊。她和农民Chen先生谈论那天哪些蔬菜是新鲜的。他总是让她尝一个小番茄或一片黄瓜。)”可知,在市场上卖蔬菜的是Mr. Chen。故选B项。

Passage 9
(2024-2025学年山东省泰安市宁阳县高一下学期期末英语试题)The most successful way to teach your children about purpose is through modeling. Children are keen observers — they don’t just hear what we say; they see what we do. If you want to teach your children about purpose, the most 1 (power) way is by living it out yourself.
When you pursue(追求) activities and hobbies 2 light you up — things that feel purposeful to you — your children will notice. They’ll see you deeply engaged in something that brings you joy and fulfillment, and that can spark their own 3 (curious). Your example might not lead them 4 the exact same passions you have, but it will give them the courage 5 (seek) out their own. It will show them that it’s not just okay but necessary to pursue what is meaningful to them.
This is what I like to call generational growth. Instead of passing down limiting 6 (belief), you’re passing down the idea that purpose is something you 7 (active) create. By being 8 example of a purposeful life, you give your children permission to do the same when they grow 9 (old).
This approach is incredibly effective because it’s not just about telling your kids how to live — it’s about showing them how. And even if their path 10 (look) different from yours, they’ll have the confidence to pursue their own journey with purpose.

Passage 10
(2024-2025学年四川省南充高级中学高一下学期4月期中英语试题)It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With just 700 metres 11 (go), Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother, Jonny, was in 12 lead. But as Alistair came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track. Without hesitation, Alistair ran towards Jonny, 13 (catch) him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an 14 (expect) end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother, 15 had been rushed to the medical area.
While there are 16 (argue) over “stupid things” between the two bothers every now and then, Alistair holds that having a brother is an advantage, which makes both of them have an 17 (enormous) positive force.
Watched 18 millions, the ending to the race has divided opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified 19 highly praised for their actions? But for Alistair, at that moment, he was no longer an athlete 20 (aim) for a medal — he was just a brother.

故填to go。
故填the。
故填who。
故填by。
故填or。

纽带
