教学过程
1 Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual. Then start a free talk: "Dear students, we all know that we live in a world full of rules. Can you share some rules you have at home or at school? For example, do you have to go to bed early at home? Or are there any rules about eating in the classroom at school?" Encourage several students to share their ideas. This activity aims to activate students' prior knowledge related to the topic of rules and create a relaxed and communicative atmosphere for the following class.
2 Pre - reading (10 minutes)
Present the title "No Rules, No Order" on the blackboard or through a PPT. Ask students to predict what the passage might be about based on the title. Then show some pictures related to rules at home and at school, such as a picture of a messy room with a sign "Clean your room every day", or a picture of students in school uniforms. Ask students to describe these pictures using the words and phrases they already know.
Next, introduce the background of the reading material: "Today, we are going to read a letter from a boy named Eric to Dr. Know. Eric is troubled by many rules in his life. Let's see what problems he has."
3 While - reading (15 minutes)
Fast Reading: Ask students to read the letter in 2a quickly and find out the main problem of Eric. After they finish reading, invite a student to summarize the main idea. The student may answer: "Eric has too many rules at home and school, and he feels troubled."
Careful Reading: Ask students to read the letter again carefully and complete the blanks with the correct modal verbs "can", "have to / must", or "can't / mustn't" in the textbook. Then, check the answers together. During this process, explain the usage of these modal verbs in the context of the sentences. For example, in the sentence "I ____ clean my room every day", "have to" is used because it is an external obligation set by his parents.
After that, ask students to underline the rules mentioned in the letter and discuss in pairs why these rules might be important. For example, for the rule "I have to wear a school uniform", students may discuss that it can create a sense of unity and equality among students.
4 Post - reading (10 minutes)
Group Discussion: Choose three important rules from 2a and ask students to discuss the questions in 2b with a partner. Give them about 3 - 5 minutes to discuss. Then, invite some groups to share their discussion results with the whole class. For example, for the rule "I can't watch TV after school until I finish my homework", students may say that this rule is important because it helps them focus on their studies first. Their advice could be "You can make a study plan and set a specific time for watching TV after finishing homework."
Writing Activity: Ask students to write a reply to Eric as Dr. Know, giving him some advice. Remind them to use the modal verbs correctly and organize their ideas logically. Provide some useful expressions and sentence structures on the blackboard, such as "You could...", "It would be a good idea to...", "I suggest that you...". Walk around the classroom to offer guidance and answer students' questions during their writing process.
5 Summary and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Summary: Summarize the key points of this lesson, including the usage of modal verbs, the importance of rules, and how to give advice. Review some of the important rules and advice that students discussed and wrote about.
Homework Assignment: Ask students to rewrite their reply letters after class, making sure to improve the language and organization. Then, ask them to share their letters with their parents or friends and get feedback. Additionally, they can think about some rules in their community and write down at least three of them and their reasons for existence.
教学反思
Positive Aspects:
The warming - up activity was effective in engaging students as they were actively sharing their experiences about rules, which smoothly led to the topic of the class.
The reading tasks were well - structured. The fast - reading and careful - reading steps gradually guided students to understand the text, and the subsequent discussion about the importance of rules helped students think deeply about the content.
The writing activity provided students with an opportunity to apply what they had learned, and most students were able to use the modal verbs and the given expressions to write a basic reply letter.
Areas for Improvement:
Some students still had difficulty distinguishing the usage of "have to" and "must". More examples and exercises could be given in future classes to strengthen their understanding.
During the group discussion, a few students were less involved. In the future, more specific group - work instructions and monitoring should be carried out to ensure every student participates actively.
In the writing assessment, it was found that some students' letters lacked coherence. In subsequent writing lessons, more attention should be paid to teaching students how to organize their ideas and use connecting words.
