A moment later, he jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for the taking. I took all of them and put them into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show grandpa all the pecans. He looked into the basket and said, “Well, how did you find so many?” I told him the truth.
Grandpa praised me for how smart I’d been in observing (观察) the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders. “That squirrel worked very hard to find food for winter” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, do you think that little squirrel will survive (存活) the cold winter? When I was six years old, grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (山核桃). Pecan picking was quite difficult for me and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eye. A large squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and was gone in a large hole in the tree.
“That squirrel worked very hard to find food for winter,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, do you think that little squirrel will survive (存活) the cold winter? If you want to have more pecans, what can you learn from the squirrel?” I know what I should do.
