Sarah Thompson faced constant challenges due to her hearing impairment (听力障碍). From a young age, she was often told what she couldn’t do, but Sarah was determined to show the world what she could achieve. After being rejected from multiple jobs because of her disability, she decided to found Ocean Breeze Crafts, a sustainable handmade goods business, to demonstrate that her disability would never define her limits.
Ocean Breeze Crafts began as a small workshop in Sarah’s apartment, but it quickly grew into a flourishing (繁荣的) business. Today, her eco-friendly products, including handmade jewelry and home decorations, are sold in shops across the country. However, Sarah’s mission goes far beyond creating beautiful items. It would be hard, Gabriel Garcia Márquez thought, to do justice to the surreal tale on screen. By his reckoning, One Hundred Years of Solitude, his landmark novel of 1967, would need a runtime of 100 hours and have to be filmed in Colombia, entirely in Spanish. Netflix, with the support of Márquez’s estate (遗产) agency, has honoured two of those three proclamations (声明). The streamer boasts that its new adaptation of Márquez’s novel—the first on screen—is “one of the most ambitious productions in Latin American history”. It has decided to compress Márquez’ s novel into 16 episodes, with the first released on December 11th, 2024.
The book presents a huge challenge to film-makers for two reasons. One is its status: many think One Hundred Years of Solitude was the greatest novel of the 20th century. It helped Márquez to win the Nobel Prize in literature in 1982 and has sold some 50m copies worldwide. With affection comes expectation. When the TV show was announced, fans online were quick to express their fears about an oversimplified, “caricatured” (讽刺描画的) retelling.
Those remarks point to the other test for adapters, which is the novel’s sheer complexity. Set in around 1850-1950, the book traces the fortunes of the Buendía family across several generations.
When Netflix approached Alex Garcia López, a director, about the project, he was excited but worried. “I remember the book having very little dialogue. I remember it being a very existential kind of book and jumping all over the place. I just thought: ‘This is just not really doable, is it?’”
It was José Rivera, one of the screenwriters, who decided the story should proceed chronologically and that it needed a narrator. It quotes from the novel word for word. “It was a great way of having Gabriel’s voice guide us through the story,” Mr López says, “and a way to be ‘faithful to the book and to its style’.”
To write One Hundred Years of Solitude Márquez drew on his childhood town of Aracataca. Almost 60 years later, Netflix is hoping this is true of its version. Márquez’s book, after all, is about history repeating itself.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Márquez made a legal claim against a copyright theft.
B. Márquez spent 100 hours completing his landmark novel.
C. Netflix got much support from Márquez to adapt his novel.
D. Netflix is proud of its new adaptation of Márquez’s novel.
9. Why is it a great challenge for the filmmakers to adapt Márquez’ s novel?
A. There is a fear about the clumsy performance of the actors.
B. The adaptation may rock the status of the work in literature.
C. The original novel unfolds a considerably complicated plot.
D. Fans hold an impractical expectation of the adapted movie.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The effective strategies of adaptation. B. The introduction to the production staff.
C. The writing style of the adapted novel. D. The strange contents of the screen work.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Márquez’s Classic: An Ambitious Literature Work
B. Netflix: A Successful Streamer to Make Film Adaptation
C. One Hundred Years of Solitude: From the Shelf to the Couch
D. Challenges for Filmmakers: From Complexity to Simplification
D
Science fiction stories have imagined future people living in underground cities or in space stations far from the sun. But if humans are ever to survive in those tough environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources—and photosynthesis (光合作用)might be nowhere near satisfactory. Now, some scientists are wondering if it’s possible to produce food more efficiently by skipping it and growing plants in the dark.
A team of researchers has taken a first step toward realizing it. The research shows it is possible to grow algae, edible yeast(食用酵母), and mushroom-producing fungi in the dark by supplying them with a carbon-based chemical not originating from plants but instead manufactured using solar electricity. This method replaced biological photosynthesis with a partly artificial process for turning sunlight into food. Their process is a version of artificial photosynthesis, a term around for years including various approaches to transforming sunlight, water, and CO2 into liquid fuels and other chemicals.
The researchers say their work represents the first time an artificial photosynthesis system has been paired with an attempt to grow common food-producing organisms. The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture, including crops growing in the dark.
While other experts are skeptical that it will ever be possible to redesign plant biology so thoroughly, they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s out-of-the-box idea about how to make food production more efficient.
It is worth keeping an open mind about how to redesign a fundamental biological process like photosynthesis applied in space or on Earth. The payoff may be something we haven’t imagined yet.
12. Why do scientists consider growing food in the dark according to paragraph 1?
A. To control the growth conditions in the dark effortlessly.
B. To cultivate food with limited resources in harsh conditions.
C. To prove to the public that traditional agriculture is ineffective.
D. To test the assumption in contemporary science-fiction literature.
13. Which of the following best describes “artificial photosynthesis”?
A. It is a newly innovated technical term in recent days.
B. It is a remarkable breakthrough in space exploration.
C It possibly makes for ways of novel food production.
D. It makes use of sunlight, water, and CO2 inefficiently.
14. What does the underlined word “out-of-the-box” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Absolutely ridiculous. B. Instantly functional.
C. Extremely mysterious. D. Incredibly innovative.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Growing Food Crops in the Dark
B. Creating Artificial Photosynthesis
C. Producing Fungi in Mushrooms
D. Turning Sunlight into Food
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Socrates, the renowned ancient Greek philosopher, famously stated, “The unexamined life is not worth living.”___16___ He believed true wisdom and personal growth couldn’t be achieved in an unexamined life.
The Socratic Method, named after Socrates himself, is a form of cooperative dialogue where one asks a series of open-ended questions to guide another toward insight and understanding. For example, imagine a teacher discussing moralities with students. The teacher may not explain what is “right” or “wrong”. ___17___ And follow up with questions like, “Why do we consider some actions fair and others unfair?” Through this questioning, students are led to think more critically and examine their own values and assumptions rather than just accepting the predetermined answers.
___18___When you ask yourself, for instance, “Why do you believe this?” or “What evidence supports your thinking?”, you are encouraged to consider whether your beliefs are truly your own or influenced by external factors. This process of questioning leads to self-reflection, helping individuals better understand the underlying motivations behind their thoughts and actions.
Self-reflection is like hitting the pause button on life. ___19___And it also looks closely at your own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. An unexamined life, however, is one where people go through the motions without ever questioning. Living an unexamined life is similar to coasting on automatic pilot, where one simply accepts social standards without critically evaluating them. In this kind of life, you’re swept along by society’s expectations. ___20___It seems as if you’re living someone else’s script without ever writing your own.
A. It gives you a moment to step back.
B. You are barely aware of your own desires.
C. So they can follow a “right” or “fair” action.
D. You are always stuck in your own ceaseless work.
E. The Socratic Method is a powerful tool for self-examination.
F. Instead, he or she might ask “What does it mean to act morally?”
G. This powerful declaration serves as a call to dig deeper into one’s own thoughts.
第三部分 语言知识运用(共三节,满分40分)
第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Making predictions hinders (妨碍) the brain’s ability to remember the present moment, new research suggests. The hippocampus, a brain structure usually ____21____ with remembering events, also uses experiences to make forecasts (neuroscientists call this “statistical learning”). ____22____ scientists writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA have now demonstrated that the latter function can disrupt (扰乱) the former.
Researchers showed participants a series of photographs on a screen without telling them that some image categories always ____23____ others: mountains always came immediately after beaches, for example. The subjects were intended to ____24____ learn these associations and begin to expect these pairings. Later, the participants were shown the same photos again, mixed in with new examples, and were asked if they had ____25____ any of them before. They accurately recalled seeing ____26____ images at a much better rate than the “predictive” ones (like the beach pictures).
The scientists repeated this process while scanning participants’ brains with functional MRI. Each image category prompted a distinct neural activity pattern, and the ____27____ for “predictable” categories were seen in the hippocampus when the corresponding predictive category was displayed. ____28____, this effect’s strength in fMRI corresponded inversely (相反地) with participants’ memory task scores. “The more evidence for prediction we saw, the ____29____ their memory was for those predictive items,” such as a particular beach scene, says study lead author and Yale University cognitive neuroscientist Brynn Sherman. This suggests that predictive images triggered the hippocampus to shift gears toward _____30_____ and away from encoding a new memory.
The study is among the first to demonstrate how making predictions _____31_____ human memory. Scientists previously suspected that the hippocampus had a role in statistical learning but had not known how it _____32_____ with memory formation. “This paper is a really nice demonstration of the _____33_____ where the hippocampus is doing both these things” says University of Virginia cognitive neuroscientist Nicole Long, who was not involved in the research.
The team says this trade-off occurs because remembering and predicting both use some of the same _____34_____ pathways. In the paper, the authors compare it with “using one’s right foot to operate both the brake and gas pedals in a car but not both at the same time.” This setup could prevent memory redundancies and thus _____35_____ brainpower, Sherman says: a successful prediction would contain the same information as an actual outcome.
The brain circuitry (电路) that makes all this possible still requires further research, Long says. For instance, she wonders how much repetition is needed before the hippocampus shifts from recording to predicting and whether it is possible to train the structure to improve both modes in tandem.

16-year-old Liam rode his rusty bicycle along the forest trail, his biology notebook in the basket filled with notes about bird migrations. Today was the final check for his ecology project — a sound map documenting animal habitats in Greenvalley Forest. But instead of recording woodpecker taps, all he heard was the roar of machines, ready to enter the forest and cut down trees at any time.
“Mr. Carter!” Liam burst into the ranger’s (护林员) station. The white-haired ranger looked up from his desk, where a map marked with red “X” s caught Liam’s eye. “They’re really cutting down the west sector next week?”
The ranger sighed. “The town needs land for expansion. The future of Greenvalley Forest depends on the upcoming ‘Town Development Meeting’. The council will approve the logging permit (伐木许可证) unless we can present conclusive evidence of the harm it will cause.” He then handed Liam a leaflet about the meeting. “It claims the project will cause little harm to nature, not mentioning the displaced (流离失所的) wildlife.” Hearing this, Liam’s chest tightened. His sound map had recorded three endangered owl (猫头鹰) nests in that exact area.
Determined to save the forest, Liam ran back to school and put up posters around over lunchtime: “SAVE GREENVALLEY OWLS! MEET AT THE RANGER’S 4 PM!” Only five classmates showed up, including Emma, his lab partner. “Look,” she adjusted her glasses, “emotional appeals won’t work. We need scientific evidence.” She pointed to Liam’s notebook. “Your sound map has recorded the time of owl calls. That’s proof.”
As twilight painted the sky orange, the group hiked into the woods with microphones and cameras. Suddenly, Emma froze. “Did you hear that?” A low whimper came from the bush. Pushing aside branches, they found a brownish yellow little owl lying on the ground, its wings bleeding and its golden eyes wide with fear. “We need to get it to the wildlife center immediately,” Liam said.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Liam carefully picked up the injured little owl with trembling hands.

D Challenges for Filmmakers: From Complexity to Simplification
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. C

The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture including crops growing in the dark.
C. It possibly makes for ways of novel food production.
D. It makes use of sunlight, water, and CO2 inefficiently.
14. What does the underlined word “out-of-the-box” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Absolutely ridiculous. B. Instantly functional.
C. Extremely mysterious. D. Incredibly innovative.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Growing Food Crops in the Dark
B. Creating Artificial Photosynthesis
C. Producing Fungi in Mushrooms
D. Turning Sunlight into Food
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章主要讲的是如何借助光合作用在黑暗中种植粮食作物。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第一段“But if humans are ever to survive in those tough environments, they will need ways to grow food using limited resources—and photosynthesis (光合作用)might be nowhere near satisfactory.(但是,如果人类想要在这些恶劣的环境中生存下去,他们将需要用有限的资源来种植食物——而光合作用可能远不能令人满意。)”可知科学家们考虑在黑暗中生产食物的目的是为了在恶劣的条件下利用有限的资源种植食物。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“The scientists are hopeful that this method could unlock new ways to produce food using less physical space and energy than traditional agriculture, including crops growing in the dark.(科学家们希望,这种方法可以开辟新的途径,以比传统农业更少的物理空间和能源生产食物,包括在黑暗中种植作物。)”可知科学家们希望,这种方法可以开辟新的种植作物的途径,由此可知人工光合作用可能会创造出新的食物生产方式。故选C项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段划线词之前“they are excited by the technology the researchers have invented and the team’s(他们对研究人员发明的技术感到兴奋和这支团队的)”以及之后“idea about how to make food production more efficient.(关于如何提高粮食生产效率的想法。)”
文章第一段“Now, some scientists are wondering if it’s possible to produce food more efficiently by skipping it and growing plants in the dark.(现在,一些科学家想知道是否有可能通过跳过它,在黑暗中种植植物来更有效地生产食物。)” Growing Food Crops in the Dark(在黑暗中种植粮食作物)作为文章标题最合适。故选A项。
【答案】16. G 17. F 18. E 19. A 20. B

第三部分 语言知识运用(共三节,满分40分)
第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Making predictions hinders (妨碍) the brain’s ability to remember the present moment new research suggests.
“This paper is a really nice demonstration of the _____33_____ where the hippocampus is doing both these things,” says University of Virginia cognitive neuroscientist Nicole Long, who was not involved in the research.

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Liam carefully picked up the injured little owl with trembling hands.

At the Town Development Meeting three days later, Liam stood before the councilors of the town.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
Liam carefully picked up the injured little owl with trembling hands. Emma helped wrap the owl in her scarf to keep it warm and still. The group hurried through the forest heading towards the wildlife center. As they approached, Liam dialed the wildlife center, explaining their situation and requesting immediate assistance. The staff met them at the door, praising them for their quick action. Seeing the owl sent for treatment, Liam felt a mix of relief and hope. Perhaps, if they could save this one life, they could save the entire forest. With determination renewed, he vowed to use every resource they had to fight for Greenvalley.
Paragraph 2
At the Town Development Meeting three days later, Liam stood before the councilors of the town. With Emma by his side, he presented their findings, highlighting the endangered owl nests and the displacement of wildlife due to the logging. He also showed the pictures of the injured owl and other bird species losing their habitats. The room fell silent as the councilors realized the seriousness of the situation. Liam’s voice, though trembling, was firm. “We need to find a way to expand our town without destroying the natural habitat of these animals,” he concluded. The councilors nodded, their faces thoughtful. Two days later, the council announced: “Logging denied due to endangered species.”
