Their books are arranged on shelves covering different needs like “Comfort,” “Words of Love,” and “Calm”. It also has a set of amazing “medicine bottles” filled with capsules containing poetry related to a particular theme, like “Chill pills”, “Joy” and “Social Media Detox”. The store delivers nothing but exceptional quality through its collections — even the British royal family buy their books from it. Books for Cooks Lying in Notting Hill, Books for Cooks sells various delicious titles on food, and also has a test kitchen or café at the back of its shop, where customers can try the recipes inside the store’s books, made with care by its chefs. Every day, the team will choose different recipes from among the many books in the shop, cooking and serving them to customers. Daunt Books Established in the 1990s, the bookstore (Marylebone High Street) offers a diverse selection of books that they arrange by country or region, allowing guests to actually go on a worldwide adventure. B The sun was setting on the vast Pacific Ocean when Captain Eduardo Rodriguez first spotted the small fishing boat. After floating (漂浮) for 55 days on the water, the five fishermen looked weathered, thin, but unbelievably alive. Vladimir, José, José Gabriel, Jhonny, and Jorge had become more than just fellow survivors during their terrible journey. They were now brothers, united by an experience that would forever connect them. “I never thought we’d make it,” Vladimir said as the Ecuadorian rescue boat pulled alongside them. His fellow fishermen nodded, each lost in memories of their impossible survival. Their adventure had begun as a fishing trip from Peru. Two days later, their boat’s engine failed, leaving them powerless and directionless. Fortunately, they survived by collecting rainwater, fishing with temporary lines and sharing everything they caught. When there was little food, they talked about their families, their dreams, and their lives back home. Jhonny from Colombia would tell jokes that made everyone laugh. José would sing old Peruvian folk songs that kept their spirits high. “We became a family out there,” Jorge later told reporters. “Not just fishermen from different countries, but true brothers.” Their rescue was more than just a miracle (奇迹). It showed human connection that went beyond national borders. As they arrived at the Galapagos Islands, local people gave them food and warm blankets. Children waved flags, international media gathered, and for a moment, these five ordinary fishermen became extraordinary symbols of hope. “We didn’t just survive,” Vladimir said with a smile. “We proved that when humans work together, nothing is impossible.” The five fishermen, once strangers from different countries, were now united by an experience that would define their lives forever. And as they hugged their families and felt solid ground under their feet, they knew their real journey was just beginning. 24. How did the fishermen possibly feel upon seeing the Ecuadorian boat? A. Hopeful. B. Embarrassed. C. Uneasy. D. Bored. 25. How did the fishermen keep their spirits high? A. By planning ways to return home. B. By competing in fishing contests. C. By arguing about survival strategies. D. By sharing something personal or interesting. 26. What happened to the fishermen when they reached the Galapagos Islands? A. They were invited to studios. B. They were rushed to a hospital. C. They were greeted warmly. D. They were sent home quickly. 27. What did the fishermen’s story show? A. The appeal of ocean fishing. B. The power of human cooperation. C. The need for better first aid systems. D. The importance of advanced technology. C Giving has many benefits, but it isn’t always easy. For example, if you suffer from depression (抑郁), you may find it hard to get up in the morning, let alone help others. But new research by Shenzhen and Peking Universities finds there may be a clever way to give. In the study, researchers arranged hundreds of young, depressed adults to either make daily micro-donations for two months or to be on a waiting list. Told that giving small donations helps improve society, participants were invited to donate at least one cent per day for the next two months to any charity. Before and every week during those two months, all participants filled out questionnaires that were about their possible depression-related aspects: depressed feelings, lack of joy, physical discomforts, sleepiness, and interpersonal problems, as well as how often they felt positive and negative feelings. After analyzing the results, the researchers found people who donated daily, even as little as one cent a day, felt significantly more positive than people on the waiting list. This, in turn, seemed to explain why they also felt less depressed each week. In other words, making donations, even small ones, helps improve mood (心情). And, though social connection wasn’t necessary for deriving benefit, the study suggests donating could help depressed people who might otherwise refuse to practice kindness toward others, according to Jinting Liu, one of the study’s coauthors. Liu suggests this could be due to the fact that if you tend to feel depressed, focusing on others for a while gives you a break from thinking about yourself and your shortcomings. It’s also possible that giving makes you feel better about yourself and that prevents the negative self-talk common to depressives. Interestingly, although people who gave more generously felt a bit happier and less depressed than those who gave less, the difference wasn’t big enough to be significant. This means even people with low means can make use of this simple activity. “Just doing something nice for others is great,” says Liu. “The amount of money isn’t the key part; it’s really about the kindness behind it.” 28. What information did the researchers collect about all participants? A. Their willingness to donate. B. Their levels of depressive signs. C. The quality of their social life. D. The frequency of their sleepiness. 29. What does the underlined word “deriving” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Using. B. Reducing. C. Doubting. D. Getting. 30. Why might giving help depressed individuals? A. It reduces self-focus time. B. It ensures comfortable talks. C. It encourages physical activity. D. It improves interpersonal relationships. 31. What can be learned according to the study? A. Giving is difficult to practice. B. Money amount determines results. C. Tiny kindnesses remain helpful. D. Generosity is the key source of joy. D How do you beat the summer heat? If you’ re like most people, you turn the air conditioning on when it’s the hottest time of the day. But what if you could use nonpeak (非高峰的) electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day? This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that’s being cooled by ice. Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, is using cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, reported CBS News. Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low, and uses this ice to cool the building during the day. “There’s about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, a company that did the installation (装置) . Air conditioning uses nearly 20% of energy use in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%. Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that. According to Paeper, the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide. The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the size of a parking spot. Because there’s a lot of energy consumed in freezing water, a more effective way had to be found. “We take water, and add some other elements in it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A&M. “So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.” While ice batteries aren’t being used to cool food or to power electrical devices they’re being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It’s a win-win for all. 32 What does the author want to stress in paragraph 3? A. The necessity of ice batteries. B. The popularity of the technology. C. The features of the high-rise. D. The significance of air conditioning. 33. Why were some elements added in the water? A. To make the water cleaner. B. To use the energy fully. C. To control the temperature. D. To add space occupation. 34. What can be inferred about ice batteries according to the text? A. They are cheap to install. B. They are energy-saving. C. They are extremely harmful. D. They are used to cool food. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Process of Ice Battery Production B. Power-hungry Air Conditioning C. Advantages of Storing Electricity D. My fourth-grade report wasn’t good, and “Needs Improvement” comments made me nervous and uneasy all the time. Although I worked very hard, I failed the final exam. Almost every time the teacher asked me to answer a question, my voice shook. But the moment Mr. Harrison —or “Mr. H”, as he insisted we call him — greeted us with a smile, my nerves disappeared gradually. “Welcome to the fifth grade! Take any seat you like,” he said with a warm voice. Young and energetic, he had a way of making even the shyest students feel at ease. I chose a desk near the front due to my nearsightedness, grateful for his approachable behaviour. Mr. H was an encouraging class and math teacher and he made learning exciting with his fun ideas and positive attitude. It did not matter whether you were the best or worst student in the class. What he did made you feel you were special. I remember the day when Mr. H announced, “Everyone, we have new students joining the class.” He was holding a cage with three tiny gerbils (沙鼠). Everyone shouted with joy. “They’re part of our family now,” he declared, and indeed, under his guidance, the classroom felt like one. Smiley faces were his trademark. He always put a smiley face on the chalkboard, homework and test papers. When I failed my first math quiz, he drew a smiley face beside my score and wrote, “Let’s figure this out together.” After class, he pulled me aside, “You’re smarter than you think,” he said. His words carried a quiet certainty that made me sit up straight. They weren’t empty praise—they were an invitation to see myself differently. “But we need to find a way that works for you,” he continued. And he meant it. He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the end of the term, something unexpected happened. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2024级高二年级上学期开学考试 英 语 考生注意: 1. How much is the shirt? B. B 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第二段中的“Before and every week during those two months, all participants filled out questionnaires that were about their possible depression-related aspects: depressed feelings, lack of joy, physical discomforts, sleepiness, and interpersonal problems, as well as how often they felt positive and negative feelings.(在这两个月之前和期间的每周,所有参与者都填写了问卷,内容涉及他们可能的抑郁相关方面:抑郁情绪、缺乏快乐、身体不适、嗜睡、人际关系问题,以及他们感受到积极和消极情绪的频率。)” 根据划线词所在句“And, though social connection wasn’t necessary for deriving benefit, the study suggests donating could help depressed people who might otherwise refuse to practice kindness toward others, according to Jinting Liu, one of the study’s coauthors.(该研究的合著者之一刘金婷表示,尽管社会联系对于deriving益处并非必要,但研究表明,捐赠可以帮助那些原本可能拒绝向他人行善的抑郁症患者。)” 根据第四段中的“Liu suggests this could be due to the fact that if you tend to feel depressed, focusing on others for a while gives you a break from thinking about yourself and your shortcomings.(刘金婷认为,这可能是因为如果你容易感到抑郁,将注意力集中在他人身上一段时间,可以让你从思考自己和自己的缺点中解脱出来。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“After analyzing the results, the researchers found people who donated daily, even as little as one cent a day, felt significantly more positive than people on the waiting list.(分析结果后,研究人员发现,每天捐赠的人,即使每天只捐1美分,也比等待名单上的人感觉明显更积极。)”以及尾段中的“Interestingly, although people who gave more generously felt a bit happier and less depressed than those who gave less, the difference wasn’t big enough to be significant. This means even people with low means can make use of this simple activity.(有趣的是,尽管慷慨捐赠的人比捐赠较少的人感觉更快乐一点、抑郁更少一点,但这种差异还不够显著。这意味着即使是经济条件有限的人也可以利用这种简单的活动。)”可推断,这篇研究表示,即使是微小的善举也有帮助。故选C项。 D How do you beat the summer heat? “So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.” While ice batteries aren’t being used to cool food or to power electrical devices, they’re being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%. Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that.(全球范围内,空调消耗了家庭和企业近20%的能源。 故选A项。 根据第四段中的“We take water, and add some other elements in it. So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.(我们先取来水,然后在其中加入一些其他物质。 根据第三段中的“Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that.(像Eleven Madison里的装置有助于降低这一比例。)”以及第五段中的“For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: He stayed late twice a week to help me with my math. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school, our empty classroom became a laboratory of learning where mistakes weren’t failures, but clues to solving the puzzles. He broke down maths problems into stories. His creative teaching way and encouraging words made me realize I wasn’t bad at school and that I just needed a guiding way. Slowly, my Ds became Cs, and then Bs. But more than grades, the way he celebrated tiny victories — smiley faces on my homework — gave me confidence. By the end of the term, something unexpected happened. I raised my hand in class without hesitation for the first time. When Mr. H asked me to answer a question, my voice didn’t shake. During a terrifying test, I got an A+. I realized I’d stopped checking for “Needs Improvement” comments — not because they’d disappeared, but because I finally saw my own potential under the guidance of Mr. H. I was so grateful to Mr. H, whose cheerful, positive and smiley faces could really make a difference in other people’s lives. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①举手:raise one’s hand/put up one’s hand ②回答:answer /reply to ③颤抖:shake/tremble 情绪类 ①自信:confidence/self-assurance ②感激的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】[高分句型1] Every Tuesday and Thursday after school, our empty classroom became a laboratory of learning where mistakes weren’t failures, but clues to solving the puzzles.(运用了关系副词where引导定语从句) [高分句型2] I realized I’d stopped checking for “Needs Improvement” comments — not because they’d disappeared, but because I finally saw my own potential under the guidance of Mr. H.(运用了两个because引导原因状语从句) [高分句型3] I was so grateful to Mr. H, whose cheerful, positive and smiley faces could really make a difference in other people’s lives.(运用了关系代词whose引导非限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
