①Like many other dogs, Scruff loves to play with plastic bottles. David Grant and his wife Yvonne Faulkner-Grant always let their 13-year-old dog pick up the plastic bottles he finds while out on their daily walks.
②In 2021, David and Yvonne noticed Scruff could find even the most well-hidden bottles. They also noticed there was more and more litter in their town. They couldn’t believe that people were littering (乱扔) so much since they were both taught never to drop their trash as children.
③At the start of 2022, David and Yvonne decided to start picking up the bottles. They also decided to train Scruff to gather other people’s trash.
④“When he picked a bottle up in 2021, he would carry it for a while and then drop it again. People would think we were dropping litter. But it wasn’t our litter,” said Yvonne, “so we got him to start bringing the bottles to us and we put them in a bag and then counted them up.”
⑤Since starting this journey, Scruff has become famous in his neighborhood. Everybody loves him.
⑥________ They hope that more people will heat Scruff’s story and either stop dropping the trash or, perhaps, try picking it up themselves. What’s more, they think Scruff has taken on his duties so well that other dogs could easily be trained to do what he does as well.
⑦“We walk the same route (路线) every day and he finds bottles on that route every day,” said David. “We feel proud that we are picking them up, but a bit angry that they’re even there,” Yvonne agrees.
⑧Scruff has collected 1,334 bottles. David and his wife think Scruff has done a really great job.
⑨And so do we! Picking up litter while taking a walk is a healthy habit that many of us could add to our lives.
23. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why Scruff likes to play with plastic bottles.
B. How Scruff has become a star in his neighborhood.
C. How David and Yvonne trained Scruff to collect plastic bottles.
D. Why David and Yvonne trained Scruff to collect plastic bottles.
24. Which of the following is the best to fill in “________”?
A. Now Scruff picks up four to five bottles every day.
B. Scruff has a five-mile walk with David and Yvonne every day.
C. David and Yvonne also shared Scruff’s cleanup work online.
D. David and Yvonne never let Scruff pick up anything dangerous.
25. Which sentence in the passage shows that the couple were angry with people’s littering?
A. “But it wasn’t our litter.”
B. “...Scruff could find even the most well-hidden bottles.”
C. “They couldn’t believe that people were littering so much...”
D. “They hope that more people will... and either stop dropping the trash…”
26. The purpose (目的) of writing this passage is to ________.
A. explain why littering is so serious
B. introduce the story of the couple and their dog
C. tell the importance of training dogs to pick up litter
D. call on people to take action to improve the environment
D
①On April Fool’s Day in many English-speaking countries, people play jokes on others. Newspapermen are usually serious, but sometimes they play jokes, too. There are many great examples of funny April Fool’s Day jokes from the newspapers and TV.
②For example, in 2008, BBC News reported that penguins (企鹅) could fly. It said their cameraman had seen this happen while filming at the South Pole. He said that luckily, he had filmed the event, and they showed some videos of penguins taking off and flying through the air. Of course, the BBC later told the truth. They had made up the whole story and used special effects (效果) to make the film.
③In 1981, the Daily Mail had a story about a Japanese runner in the London marathon (马拉松). The man was still running days after the race had finished. The story explained that the runner had misunderstood the rules of the race. Instead of running for 26 miles, he believed he needed to run for 26 days. The paper said that he was lost somewhere in the middle of the British countryside.
④And there’s certainly nothing new about these types of stories. Back in 1878, the Daily Graphic newspaper in the USA had a story about the famous scientist Thomas Edison. It told its readers that Edison had invented a food machine that would feed the humans. It didn’t explain how the machine worked, just that it would make any kind of food using air, water and earth. Many people believed the story and Edison got letters from people all over the country.
⑤So when people tell you not to believe everything you read in the newspapers or watch on TV, they might be right—especially on April 1st.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. The penguins can fly at the South Pole.
B. Edison’s food machine worked very well.
C. Marathon runners sometimes need to run for 26 days.
D. BBC News might play jokes on people on April 1st.
28. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. how the newspapers and TV play jokes on April Fool’s Day
B. What did the BBC cameraman make by using special effects
C. Why did the Japanese runner get lost in the middle of countryside
D. Who invented a food machine to feed the humans on the earth
29. How does the writer support (支持) the main idea of the text?
A. By giving reasons. B. By comparing opinions.
C. By showing examples. D. By using numbers.
30. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

I’ve got some great news. Dizzy’s operation was a success! Dizzy’s resting at the vet’s at the moment and the vet says she can come home tomorrow. Hooray! I’m feeling better too. So I’ll be able to look after Dizzy when she gets home.

【答案】23. D 24. C 25. C 26. D
再结合第三段“They also decided to train Scruff to gather other people’s trash.”可知,因为Scruff 可以很容易找到瓶子,所以他们训练Scuff 捡垃圾。由此可知第二段是训练Scruff 捡垃圾的原因。故选D。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据“They hope that more people will heat Scruff’s story and either stop dropping the trash or, perhaps, try picking it up themselves.”
根据“They couldn’t believe that people were littering (乱扔) so much since they were both taught never to drop their trash as children.”可知,他们无法相信人们会乱扔垃圾,因为他们小时候都被教育不要乱扔垃圾。由此可知他们对于乱扔垃圾的行为感到生气。故选C。

A. B. C. D.
【答案】27. D 28. A 29. C 30. A
