Teaching Procedures Step 1 Lead - in (5 minutes) Show the picture on Page 6 (students with friendship) and ask: “What can you see in the picture? What does the picture make you think of?” Guide students to answer “friendship” and then ask: “Do you think friendship is important in our lives? Why?” Let students share their ideas briefly. Step 2 Pre - discussion (10 minutes) Present the new words about friendship qualities (helpful, honest, cheerful, humorous, caring, clever, friendly, hard - working, interesting, kind, polite, smart, tidy) by showing simple definitions and examples. For example, for “honest”, say “Honest people tell the truth, like if you break a cup, an honest person will say ‘I did it’.” Ask students to try to remember these words and have a quick quiz by showing the Chinese meanings and letting students say the English words. Step 3 While - activity (15 minutes) Activity A Ask students to do Activity A individually: match the qualities on the left with the explanations on the right. Then check the answers together. For each match, ask a student to explain why they choose that answer, for example, “Why do you think ‘honest’ matches ‘Tell the truth’?”, to ensure students understand the meanings. Activity B Divide students into pairs. Let them role - play the conversation in Activity B first, and then discuss more about what qualities are important in good friends, using the words in the box. Walk around the classroom to offer help if needed. Invite several pairs to present their conversations in front of the class. Step 4 Post - discussion (10 minutes) Activity C Let students think about the question in Activity C: “What qualities do you think you have as a friend?” individually first. Then organize a class discussion. Ask some students to share their answers, and encourage others to give comments, like “Do you agree with his/her opinion? Why or why not?”, to practice more speaking. Step 5 Summary and Homework (5 minutes) Summary Summarize the key points of this lesson: the vocabulary about friendship qualities and how to discuss about good friends. Homework Ask students to write a short passage (at least 50 words) about their best friend, describing the qualities that make this friend special. Review the new words and phrases learned in this lesson. IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness Check students' answers in Activity A to see if they master the meanings of the words. Observe students' performance in pair work and class discussion to evaluate their speaking skills and understanding of friendship qualities. V. Design Purpose The lead - in activates students' prior knowledge about friendship. Pre - discussion helps students learn new vocabulary, which is the basis for further activities. While - activity practices students' matching skills and oral English through role - play.
