Volunteering takes up our time, energy and sometimes money. But why do people still do that? Here are the reasons.
Volunteering is good for others. There are many people in need. Governments and professionals (政府和专业人士) try to meet everyone’s needs, but it’s difficult for them to do it all. That is why some people need help. If people only think of themselves, the world will become a cruel (残酷的) place. But when we try to help each other, we can help make our planet a better and happier home.
Volunteers and volunteer groups can bring food for hungry people, provide homes or clothes for those who need them, and protect (保护) wildlife and natural areas. They can help people learn to read or do better at school.
On the other hand, volunteering is good for yourselves. You might get something in return, for example, getting happier and healthier.

What can you do to help yourself get out of stress or worry? If you’re an artist, you keep making art. And if you have never considered yourself an artist, now it is time to take up an artistic hobby such as drawing or painting. It is never too late to start. Everyone can do it. If you can hold a brush or crayon, you can create art.
Creating art heals (治愈) not only the mind and spirit but also the body since all of these are connected. As you draw or paint, your breathing slows, your blood pressure lowers, and your mind lets go of daily problems. This slowing down allows you to fully experience the moment. The process not only relaxes you but also brings a feeling of joy, increasing your energy and enthusiasm for life.
Making art also allows you to play, freeing you to find out and try out new materials and methods. It also lets you express pleasure by seeing beauty where others may not. Creating art provides you with a special chance to express your anger or upset, as well as your personal ideas.
Although the process of making art is the most important part, your finished product is important too. Your painting or drawing will remind you of the lessons you learned while making it, and you may feel energetic just by looking at it.
If you don’t know how to begin, here are some ways to start creating art. If possible, set aside a small table with your brushes and watercolors so you can get creative whenever you get inspiration (灵感). Without thinking much about it, just choose colors that you like and start painting with them, or cut pictures with those colors out of magazines and glue them down, combining (结合) them with paints. The act of enjoying the colors and working on the color combinations will give you something to focus on instead of the stresses of your daily life.
根据语篇内容选择最佳答案。
11. What can you learn about making art from Paragraph 2 and 3?
A. It is good for our health.

People are afraid of difficulties, but sometimes it’s the difficulties and challenges that make us better people. Bell’s story is a good example. When she was four years old, Cece Bell became deaf and had to wear a hearing aid. As the only deaf student at her school, Bell wished that there was a list of instructions to help people understand how to communicate with her better.
When she was older, this inspired Bell to write the graphic (图画的) novel EL Deafo, which is partly based on her life but with talking rabbits instead of humans. In her book, Bell finds that she can use her hearing aid like a superpower and becomes the hero EL Deafo. The book was a huge success and won lots of awards, and now it has been turned into a famous TV series.
In an interview with the newspaper, Bell explained why she decided to make all the characters in EL Deafo rabbits, “I wanted to show what it felt like to be the only deaf kid in my elementary school,” she says. “I needed a good visual metaphor (隐喻), and rabbits, with their big ears and amazing hearing, were perfect for that. Actually, I felt just like the only rabbit whose big ears didn’t work—I had the ears for show, but little else.” The decision to write it as a graphic novel was also linked to her experience with deafness. “I wanted to use speech balloons, which are used in almost all graphic novels, to show what my character is hearing or speaking in the story.”
“I want to call on more people to care for the deaf children—although we could hardly hear, we still want to communicate with others.” she says.

Volunteering takes up our time energy and sometimes money.
根据语篇内容做出判断,正确选A,错误选B。
6. The world needs volunteers because there are many people in need.
7. It is difficult for governments to meet everyone’s needs.
8. Volunteers can help people in trouble, but they can’t protect wildlife and natural areas.
9. Volunteers can become happier and healthier in return.
