Students will be able to identify, form, and use compound words correctly in context. B. Ability Objectives Improve students’ word - building skills by creating compound words. Enhance students’ reading and writing abilities through the application of compound words. C. Emotional Objectives Cultivate students’ interest in English word - building. Raise students’ awareness of using language creativity to describe emergencies or natural disasters. II. Teaching Key & Difficult Points A. Key Points Master the four ways of forming compound nouns. Correctly form and use compound words in exercises and writing. B. Difficult Points Distinguish different compound - forming structures and apply them accurately. Skillfully use compound words to describe emergencies or natural disasters. III. Teaching Procedures A. Lead - in (5 minutes) Show some pictures of compound - related things, like a snowstorm, a policeman, a playground. Ask students: “Do you know what these words are? Can you guess how they are formed?” Introduce the topic: “Today we will learn how to create new words by combining two words, which are called compound words.” B. Presentation (10 minutes) Explanation of Compound Words Write on the blackboard: “Compound words are formed by putting two words together. We can make compound nouns in four ways: noun + noun; noun + verb; verb + noun; adjective + noun.” Give examples for each way: Noun + noun: thunderstorm, teamwork, snowball Noun + verb: earthquake, rainfall, sunrise Verb + noun: passport, playground, driveway Adjective + noun: whiteboard, software, gentleman Explain that sometimes we need to add a hyphen, e.g., north - east, part - time. Quick Recognition (Oral) Show some simple words and ask students to form compound words orally, e.g., “police + man = policeman; tooth + ache = toothache”. C. Practice (15 minutes) Exercise A Completion (Individual Work) Ask students to complete Exercise A by finding out how the words form new compound words. Walk around to offer help. After students finish, check the answers together: man policeman; police + woman policewoman head + ache headache; tooth + ache toothache post + man postman; post + card postcard air + port airport; pass + port passport Compound Word Creation (Pair Work) Divide students into pairs. Give them a set of simple words (e.g., bed, room, foot, ball, home, work) and ask them to form as many compound words as possible. For example: bedroom, football, homework. Invite some pairs to share their compound words. D. Consolidation (8 minutes) Exercise B Completion (Group Work) Divide students into groups of 3 - 4. Ask them to complete Exercise B by making compound words and filling in the blanks. The possible compound words and answers: (1) countryside (country + side) (2) weekend (week + end) (3) postman (post + man) (4) something (some + thing) Each group presents their answers and explains how they form the compound words. Error Correction Show some incorrect compound word formations, e.g., “police + woman = policewoman” (correct), but if there is a mistake like “police + man = policeman” (correct, used for comparison). Or wrong ones like “tooth + ache = toothache” (correct), and a wrong formation like “head + ache = headache” (correct). Just use simple wrong examples to let students correct, like “foot + ball = foot ball” (correct to “football”). E. Expansion (5 minutes) Emergency/Natural Disaster Description Based on Exercise C, ask students to think about an emergency or natural disaster and use compound words to describe it. For example, “During the snowstorm, the snowball hit the window. The postman couldn't deliver the postcard on time because of the thick snow on the driveway.” Invite some students to share their descriptions. F. Homework (2 minutes) Compound Word Collection Ask students to find 5 more compound words from their textbooks or other English materials, and write down their forming parts and meanings. Writing Task Write a short passage (at least 60 words) about an emergency or natural disaster, using at least 5 compound words. IV. Blackboard Design Ways to Form Compound Nouns Examples Noun + Noun thunderstorm, teamwork, snowball Noun + Verb earthquake, rainfall, sunrise Verb + Noun passport, playground, driveway Adjective + Noun whiteboard, software, gentleman Compound Words in Use policeman, toothache, postman, postcard, airport, passport V. Summary In this lesson, we learned what compound words are and four common ways to form compound nouns. Through practice, we can form and use compound words correctly. We also practiced using compound words to describe emergencies or natural disasters, which helps improve our language creativity and application ability. VI. Teaching Reflection The practice activities can effectively help students master compound words. However, in future teaching, more real - life examples and more diverse practice forms can be added to enhance students’ interest and proficiency. Also, pay more attention to the differences in students’ learning speeds and provide individualized guidance. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
