At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible ( 负责的) for the whole term. Rita,a quiet and hard-working girl, hoped for an exciting task, like taking care of the class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.
Even though the teacher said that this task was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. However, she decided to do her best with her new responsibility. She began to study and care for the ant, learning about its habitat (栖息地) and needs. She made the box a comfortable home for the ant, and it grew much bigger than anyone expected.
Rita’s efforts caught the attention of her science teacher, Mr. Thompson. He turned her work into a class project, and Rita became an expert on ants in her class. Her hard work helped the whole class learn about the behavior and habitats of ants. They even built a small ant farm in the classroom to watch the ant closely.
As the school year progressed, Rita’s classmates became more and more interested in the ant project. They started asking her questions and finding out the ant’s behavior themselves. Rita felt proud to share her knowledge and see her classmates so interested. She even organized a presentation (报告) where she shared her findings with the whole school during the science fair.

We can see circles, squares and triangles everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? Much like colors, different shapes can show different features (特征) of characters in the scenes.
Circles represent (代表) things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, flowers, raindrops and so on. We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces...All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies-heroes, kids, good people—are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned. In Up, Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn (执拗的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way. Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shen Gongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable (稳固的) and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. So ,next time you see a film, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
根据材料内容选择最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
56. The writer explains the relationship between squares and personalities of cartoon characters by ________.
A. telling a story B. giving an example
C. raising a question D. showing the results of a study
57. Why is Shen Gongbao mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. Because kids think he is a monster. B. Because he has a row of sharp teeth.
C. Because he is a bad guy in the film. D. Because he is not easy to deal with.
58. What does the underlined word “triangle” refer to?
A. B. C. D.
59. Which of the following is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
60. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Why different shapes represent different things.
B. What makes heroes in films have great charm.
C. What different shapes represent in films.
D. How to make cartoons with different colors and shapes.

Some believe that people are either smart or dumb. And if they are smart, everything is easy for them. ____61____ But they can improve the skills they have and develop new ones. What’s your opinion?
In fact, this is related to one’s mindset (思维模式). Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychology (心理) professor at Stanford University, has discovered that people with a fixed mindset solve problems in a much different way from those with a growth mindset.
Dr. Dweck found people with a fixed mindset care about grades. When they make mistakes, they think it means they’re not smart. ____62____ They’re afraid of challenges, because if they don’t do well, they may look dumb. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, care about learning, not grades. They learn from mistakes by trying different ways to solve problems or asking for help.
____63____ They discovered that students with a growth mindset do better in math; those with a fixed mindset do worse. Why? Kids with both mindsets do well in primary school, but middle school math is much harder. So while the growth-mindset kids accept the challenge and work harder, the fixed-mindset kids may just give up. ____64____
But Dweck’s team discovered something even more important than that. They found that, with some work, kids can choose to have a growth mindset and do better in school. Everyone has some of each type of mindset. ____65____ When you hear your fixed mindset voice telling you that you’re dumb, or that you’ll look stupid if you ask for help, or that learning a new skill is hard, talk back to it! Then you really can get smarter by working hard, practicing and challenging yourself!
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A. As a result, their grades drop.
B. They also care about how smart they look.
C. Some hold the belief that not everyone can become a genius (天才).
D. They are just like two kinds of voices in your head.
E. Dweck and her team did a research among middle school students.

If you could have any animal as a pet, real or imaginary, what would it be and why?
At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible ( 负责的) for the whole term. Rita,a quiet and hard-working girl, hoped for an exciting task, like taking care of the class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.
Even though the teacher said that this task was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. However, she decided to do her best with her new responsibility. She began to study and care for the ant, learning about its habitat (栖息地) and needs. She made the box a comfortable home for the ant, and it grew much bigger than anyone expected.
Rita’s efforts caught the attention of her science teacher Mr.
At the end of the year, the school recognized Rita’s class as the best of the year. They praised Rita for her hard work and how she turned a small responsibility into something big.
A B. C. D.
59. Which of the following is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
60. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Why different shapes represent different things.
B. What makes heroes in films have great charm.
