I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I looked through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dong loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面团)covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had failed, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the 'living thing 'was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing--Doug or me? 1. The writer's purpose in writing this story is ___________ A. to tell an interesting experience B. to show the easiest way out of a difficulty C. to describe the trouble facing a newly married woman D. to explain the difficulty of learning to cook from books 2. Why did the woman's attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful? A. The canned orange had gone bad. B. She didn't use the right kind of flour. C. The cookbook was hard to understand. D. She did not follow the directions closely. 3. Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin? A. She didn't see the use of keeping it B. She meant to joke with her husband. C. She didn't want her husband to see it . D. She hoped it would soon dry in the sun. 4. What made the dough in the rubbish bin make the noise? A. The rising and falling movement. B. The strange-looking marks. C. Its shape. D. Its size. B Let Moments Inspire You When I was a teenager I volunteered to work at the water station at a 10,000m race. My job was to hand out water to the runners. I remember being so excited to see all the different kinds of people who passed by and grabbed a cup of water. I saw so many types of people doing it. I thought maybe I could do it too! So the next year I signed up for the race. That first 10,000m race was quite an experience. At times, I didn’t know if I could finish. Then came a defining moment. At one point near the end, a 70-year-old ran past me, very fast and I felt embarrassed that I was 50 years younger than he and I couldn’t even keep up with him. I felt defeated for a second. But then I realized something. He was running his race and I was running mine. He had different abilities, experience, training and goals for himself. I had mine. Remember my goal was only to finish. After a minute, it hit me that this was a lesson I could draw from. I learned something about myself in that moment. I turned my embarrassment into inspiration. I decided that I would not give up on running races. In fact, I would run even more races and I would learn how to train and prepare properly and one day I would be one of those 70-year-olds who was still running. As I crossed the finish line, I was proud of my accomplishment. In life we all have those moments when we compare ourselves to others. It’s natural. Don’t allow those moments to weaken you. Turn them into motivation and let them inspire you. Use them to show you what is possible. With a proper preparation and training, you can improve your results to achieve anything you want in life. 5. The author signed up for the race because of _______. A. her running gift B. the racers’ inspiration C. her interest in sports D. the racers’ excitement 6. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Positive B. Negative C. Doubtful D. Serious 7. How did the author feel at her race result? A. Regretful B. Satisfied C. Embarrassed D. Amazed 8. According to the article, finding yourself not as good as others, you should ________. A. try to find out other gifts you might have B. avoid comparing yourself with others C. change or reset your goal D. try to motivate yourself C In Germany there are different kinds of high schools. Some prepare students for workers, others prepare them for college. All schools are great places for making friends and learning German. Short days Most high schools in Germany begin at about 8:00 a.m. and end at about 3:30 p.m. This means your morning will be busy with classes. You will have time to do homework and take part in private(私人的) clubs after school. Formal setting In Germany, teachers and students’ relationship is more formal than you might be used to. Teachers are respected and students must use the formal “Sie(德语:您)” when talking to teachers. Getting to school Most students take public transport to school or ride a bicycle. Some areas have school buses. It is not common for parents to drive students to school. Private clubs In many countries, schools offer official sports and after-school activities. This is less common in Germany. After-school activities are usually organized through private clubs. There are clubs for things like soccer, dance, choir, theatre and almost everything else. Once you are in Germany, ask around at school and talk to other students to find out what private clubs are in your area and meet your interests. Different states, different schools Each of Germany’s 16 states has its own slightly different school systems. The school system in Brandenburg will be a little different from the system in Bavaria for example. Where you live, your knowledge level and your age will decide what school you can attend. 9. For high school students in Germany, which is NOT the common transport to school? A. Parents’ cars B. School buses C. Public transport D. Students’ bicycles 10. From the passage, we can learn that in Germany _______. A. all kinds of high schools are for college B. students can join private clubs to meet their interests C students can take part in after-school activities from 8:00 a. m .to 3:30 p.m. D. age is not important for attending schools 11. What can be the best title for this article? A. German High Schools B. German Public Transport C. German Private Clubs D. German College Systems D Liverpool, my hometown, is a special city. It is so unique that in 2004 it became a World Heritage(遗产)Site. I recently returned to my home city and my first stop was at a museum on the River Mersey. Blanketed in mist (薄雾), Victorian architecture rose from the banks of the river, responded to the sounds of sea-birds, and appeared unbelievably charming. When I headed toward the centre, I found myself surrounded by buildings that mirror the best palaces of Europe. It is not hard to imagine why, on first seeing the city, most visitors would be overpowered by the beauty of the noble buildings, which are solid signs of Liverpool’s history. As if stress its cultural role, Liverpool has more museums and galleries  than most cities in Britain. At Walker Art Gallery, I was told that it has best collections of Victorian paintings in the world, and is the home of modern art in the north of England. However, culture is more than galleries. Liverpool offers many music events. As Britain’s No.1 music city, it has the biggest city music festival in Europe, and its musicians are famous all over the world. Liverpool is also well-known for its football and other sports events. Every year, the Mersey River Festival attracts thousands of visitors, madding the city a place of wonder. As you would expect from such a city, there are restaurants serving food from around the world. When my trip was about to complete, I chose to rest my legs in Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic pub (酒馆). It is a monument to perfection, and a heritage attraction itself. Being a World Heritage Site, my home city is certainly a place of “outstanding universal value”. It is a treasure house with plenty of secrets for the world to explore. 12. Visitors who see the city for the first time would be deeply impressed by________ A. its charming banks B. its famous museums C. its wonderful palaces D. its attractive buildings 13. Liverpool has important cultural role because __________. A. it has the best collections of Victorian paintings B. it has museums, galleries, music festival and sports events C. the Mersey River festival attracts thousands of visitors D. the best palaces of Europe are in Liverpool 14. The author uses the Philharmonic pub to prove that_______ A. Liverpool is a well-known city for its restaurants B. Liverpool is an impressive place full of attraction C. a pub is a wonderful place for visitors to relax themselves D. a pub is a perfect choice for visitors to complete their journey 15. The third paragraph is developed mainly by _______. A. providing different examples B. following the order of space C. making comparisons D. analyzing causes 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone is born into a family but not everyone gets a healthy one. Jean took a job in a top New York restaurant where her reputation quickly grew as one of the most skilled chefs. However, her dream was to go back home to Washington because her father was getting old, and she wanted to be near him. So Jean accepted an offer from Washington’s top restaurant and flew to the city. The next day after she returned, Jean set out for the meeting at which she would sign the contract. The taxi driver dropped her off in the street of the new restaurant. As she got out of the car, she saw a green awning (遮篷). “I know that” she said. “That place at the corner.” The driver sighed, “That used to be the best restaurant in town. But a few years ago, the owner died and it has been downhill since then.” Jean thanked the driver. Instead of going to her meeting, she crossed the street towards the old restaurant with the shabby (简陋的) green awning printed with the word: Fargonetti’s. She pushed open the door but didn’t see any customers inside. Then the memories came flooding back. Jean’s mom passed away when she was just 11, and her father struggled to raise the family. On her fourteenth birthday, her father took her to a nearby restaurant, where she was standing now, to treat her to a special meal. However, he didn’t have enough money. Later, when the owner of the restaurant and his son Carl learned what had happened, they offered them a free meal, including a beautiful birthday cake. 注意:续写词数应为150词左右。 Just at that moment, a young man showed up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jean promised to stay and help. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 广安友实学校 2022-2023学年上期高2025届第二次月考暨半期考试 英语试题 (考试时间120分钟,总分150分) 注意事项: 1. 1.What does the man ask for? He looked surprised to see Jean. “Can I help you?” he asked. Jean turned — this was Carl, the owner’s son, now tired and stressed. “Carl? It’s me, Jean,” she said. His eyes lit up in recognition. They embraced, and Jean learned Carl had been trying to keep Fargonetti’s alive since his father passed. But without enough customers or a skilled chef, the restaurant was failing. As Carl spoke, Jean remembered the kindness they had shown her and her father on her birthday — the free meal, the cake, and the dignity. Tears filled her eyes. Jean promised to stay and help. She canceled her contract and used her skills to revive the restaurant. She redesigned the menu, blending French techniques with classic Italian dishes, and trained a new team. Soon, the green awning was refreshed, the dining room filled, and Fargonetti’s became beloved again. For Jean, the greatest joy was seeing her father in his favorite booth each night, proud as she honored the place that once saved them. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
