Ability objectives By the end of this section, students will be able to: familiar with the features of a letter of advice: Beginning(understanding)--Body(advice)--Ending(encouragement) learn to make the letter more persuasive by adding specific examples and personal experiences learn to make the whole passage cohesive by using linking words Thinking objectives By the end of this section, students will be able to: perceive and analyze a problem from a multi-dimensional angle and find diverse solutions through thinking learn to put themselves into others’ shoes and be considerate Key points and difficult points Key points: How to help students learn the skills of writing an advice letter with a targeted task Targeted task: If you were a member of the Psychological Consulting Room, please write a letter of advice to Gloomy Boy whose mother always compares him with others. Difficult points: How to let students write a proper, practical and persuasive letter of advice. Teaching procedure Step 1 Motivating Activity 1: Lead-in Let the students look at a picture of the Psychological Consulting Room of No.1 Middle School in Qiyang County and a photo of myself as a psychologist. Ask a student to check the mailbox, open the letter and read it out. 【设计意图：灵活使用道具和多媒体素材导入课堂，激发学生的好奇心。并且以祁阳一中心理咨询室和老师本人头像创设情境，能让学生更有熟悉感和亲切感，拉近师生距离。】Dear doctor: When I was in junior high, my mom hoped I could go to No.1 Middle School in Qiyang County. This gives me much pressure and makes my grades worse. What should I do? Gloomy Boy Activity 2: Challenging task assignment Do a mini-survey: Do you have the same problem? Get students to regard themselves as the members of the Psychological Consulting Room and introduce today’s mission: write out a prescription to Gloomy Boy, that is, write a letter of advice, to solve his problem. 【设计意图：通过课堂小调查，引起学生共鸣，进而自然引出本节课的主要任务：给“忧郁男孩”开处方写建议信，激发学生的学习热情。】 Step 2 Enabling Task 1 Enabling IDEAS Activity 3: Diagnose problems Let students state the problems of the three emails on page 22. Then try to figure out Gloomy Boy’s problem. Invite one boy and one girl to come to the blackboard and write down their solutions within two minutes. The more, the better. From your email, it sounds like you put a lot of effort into your schoolwork. If your mother doesn’t value that, of course you’re going to be unhappy. But remember: every parent has high hopes for their children. Your mother wants you to be successful but she probably fails to see how you struggle. Try these pieces of advice and see if they help improve your relationship. First, talk to your mother. Make sure she understands your feelings. Choose a good time and start the conversation politely. You can begin with something like, “I know that you expect me to do well at school, but I’m struggling sometimes. Can we please talk?” you should also try to meet in the middle when talking to your mother. Of course, school matters, but relaxation is good for you too. Tell your mother about your interests and ask for more free time to spend on them. For example, if you like listening to music, explain why you enjoy it and how it helps you. Why don’t you make a deal that you are both satisfied with? Second, put yourself in your mother’s shoes and try to understand what she does. I know it isn’t easy, but you must be patient. When your mother doesn’t let you go out with your friends, think about the reason why she does so. When I was your age, I thought senior high school was tiring too. I couldn’t understand why my parents were so strict with me. However, when I grew up, I realized that they just wanted me to have the best possible future.
