What will our life be like in 50 years? I think we will live on Mars. Here is what life will be like there.
First of all, transport should be much better. Now, our spaceships (宇宙飞船) are too slow to carry lots of people to space—it takes months. However, in the future, it will take us two or three days to get to Mars by spaceship!
Many people believe that robots will do most of our work, so we will have more time for our hobbies.
How about the food, water, and air? Scientists will be able to develop plants that can be grown on Mars. These plants will produce (产 出) the food and air we need. However, can these plants give water to us? There is no answer now.
There are also some problems for us. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be dangerous because we can easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To stop this, humans on Mars have to wear special shoes to put on weight (重量). What’s more, food will look like pills (药片) and will not be as delicious as it is today.
1.What will the future spaceship be like?

What will the future be like? I believe new science technologies (技术) will change our life in different ways.
▲ They will work for us, like bringing us useful things, taking away our rubbish and cooking for us. The robots can help look after our pets too. So our life will become easier and more comfortable.
We will be able to go into computer games and films, and everything will feel real. With the help of computer science, we will even be able to make our homes look like forests, sunny beaches or anything else.
In the future, we will have many machines. They can copy almost anything. Just put a cake in the machine, and it will make a new one. The machines can also help send food and gifts to our friends far away like a fax machine (传真机).
We will travel faster and safer around the world, and even into space (太空) . We will be able to visit different places with a new kind of travel bag. The bag has two legs and it can carry us anywhere. Maybe one day we can work on the earth, sleep on the moon, and even take a holiday on the sun. How amazing! We believe that day will come soon.

Computers have become smarter in recent years. The AI-powered chatbot (人工智能聊天机器人) ChatGPT is able to answer questions, write articles and do translations like a human. It has caused excitement all over the world. Like most products these days, ChatGPT wasn’t made by just one person. Instead, it was developed by a group of engineers at OpenAI. But according to the company, one man played an especially important role. That man is Jakub Pachocki.
Pachocki is a programmer (程序员). He has been interested in AI for many years. He wants to use this technology to make computers smarter. In 2017, the man joined OpenAI. There he taught a robot to play Dota 2, an online game. Pachocki made the robot play against itself over and over until it reached the professional level.
Pachocki began working on ChatGPT in 2018. His job was to pretrain (预训练) the AI system. The man and his team made computers study billions of words. These words came from books, magazines, websites and so on. They covered many different topics. By studying these words, the system learnt the patterns (模式) of human language. This process (过程) helped it develop the ability to “chat” about different topics like a real person.
Although Pachocki is very talented, he has kept a low profile (保持低调). He seldom talks to the media. He is not active on social media either. The programmer, instead, focuses on his work. He spends most of his time trying to make computers smarter.
Does ChatGPT’s intelligence (智力) surprise you? Well, now you know there are smart minds like Pachocki behind it. Computers are not getting smarter on their own.
1.Why has ChatGPT made people all over the world excited?
A.Because it can play online games.
B.Because it can work better than human beings.
C.Because it was developed by a group of engineers.
D.Because it can do many things just like a human.
2.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.How to help ChatGPT “chat”.
B.When to pretrain the AI system.
C.Where to get different topics.
D.What the system learnt from the patterns of human language.
3.What do you know about Pachocki according to the text?
A.He joined Open AI 10 years ago. B.He is talented and hard-working.
C.He is often active on social media. D.He makes computers smarter by himself.
4.What may be the best title for the text?
A.The History of ChatGPT B.The Use of ChatGPT
C.Great Minds Behind ChatGPT D.The Importance of ChatGPT

Scientists have made some very surprising predictions about the future. They say that in the next fifty years, the way we live will change (改变) greatly. Here are some of their predictions. Which is surprising to you?
Growing body parts
Scientist Ellen says, “In 50 years we can repair (修) sick body parts in the same way as we repair a car.” But doctors will need lots of body parts. Where will they come from? Scientists say these could be grown inside animals from human cells (细胞). In a hospital in London, scientists have already started to use human cells to grow noses and ears.
Living longer
In 50 years, living to be 100 years old while still enjoying active and healthy lives will be a common thing. Scientist Richard Miller says, “it’s now possible to make the animals in the lab (实验室) live longer than before. And we believe we can do the same for humans.” With new medicine, people in their 100s will be as lively (生气勃勃的) as today’s sixty-year-olds. Women will be able to give birth well at an old age.
________
According to scientist Daniel from Canada, a special machine will be able to “read” feelings and thoughts. It could first work with primates (灵长类动物), then mammals, then other vertebrates like fish. This way we can “talk” to animals. Soon people on the planet will probably say no to meat and many of them may become vegetarians.
1.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.
A.doctors B.animals C.humans cells D.body parts
2.Which of the following can be put in the blank?
A.Working with animals B.Saying no to meat
C.Understanding animals D.Making a special machine
3.From the text we can infer (推断) that ________.
A.everyone can live up to 100 years old in the future
B.old women can give birth as well as young women
C.animals can speak the human language and talk to people
D.human cells may grow inside animals to be new body parts
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

①In the future cities, will we have smart buildings and flying cars? Or robots that will do our housework? What about schools? Will we still travel to school or will we study online at home?
②Maybe ... or maybe not, but what we do know is that in the future, cities are going to have more and more people living in them. More than half of the world’s people already live in cities, and by 2050, cities will become home to about 6.5 billion people. That’s a lot of people and very little space! More people means that we’re going to have more pollution, traffic and noise. It also means that we’ll need more homes, schools, hospitals and jobs. We’ll need more resources, like water and trees, and more ways to grow food too. Oh, and more parks to play in!
③Many cities are already planning for the future. For example, Bristol is a cycling city in England. You can ride bikes on the cycle road. In Singapore, people are looking “up” to grow food! To save land (土地), they grow vegetables in lots of layers (层) in special tall buildings, called “vertical farms”. In Amsterdam in North Europe, there are “floating (漂浮) houses” built on water instead of on land!
1.Why does the writer ask the questions in the first paragraph?
A.To predict what cities will be like. B.To describe the old cities.
C.To introduce new ways of life. D.To show the importance of cities.
2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Problems in future cities.
B.Plans about building future cities.
C.Ways of feeding people in future cities.
D.Advice on managing (管理) future cities.
3.What does the word “resources” mean in Chinese?
A.经历 B.效率 C.信息 D.资源
4.What do “vertical farms” and “floating houses” have in common?
A.They are easy-made. B.They are good-looking.
C.They are land-saving. D.They are water-covered.
5.In which part of a magazine may the passage appear?
A.Culture Corner (角). B.Future Life. C.Art World. D.Science Study.

重难语篇提升练
