A
(2024·湖北武汉调研)If you live on this planet, there's a decent chance you've seen the classic Star Trek episode,in which Captain Kirk and several members find themselves in what appears to be another universe.
These days,it seems the idea of the multiverse—many worlds—is having its Hollywood moment. Its appeal as a storytelling device is obvious—characters explore a multi-world with varying degrees of similarity to our own,as well as different versions of themselves.Hence,it has been fully established in mainstream pop culture.
While Hollywood can't seem to get enough of the multiverse,it remains deeply controversial (有争议的) among scientists.Advocates on the two sides show no mercy toward each other in their books and on their blogs. But physicists didn't pull the idea out of thin air—rather, several distinct lines of reasoning seem to point to the multiverse's existence. However, critics warn that making the multiverse legal could make it harder for the public to distinguish speculative (推测性的) theories from established fact, making it more difficult to keep pseudoscience (伪科学) at bay.Giving credit to such speculation risks “turning fundamental physics into pseudoscience”.
The multiverse controversy is rooted in the idea of testability. If we can't interact with these other universes,or detect them in any way, some experts insist that reduces them to mere philosophical speculation. But Carroll,an advocate for “many worlds”,argues that mathematics is the language describing our physical theories. If Schrödinger's equation (方程),on which quantum (量子) mechanics rests, predicts the existence of many worlds,so be it.
Could a more expansive view of the universe itself be the next breakthrough? As Siegfried puts it,“Every time in the past that we've thought,‘We've got it; this is what the whole universe is’—the people who've said,‘Maybe there's more than one of those’ have always turned out to be right.”

(2024·河南开封一模)Based on new data from the European Space Agency's Gaia mission and other space science data sets, astronomers have created an animation to model dust in the Milky Way.The work was presented this week at the National Astronomy Meeting.
The animation shows the cumulative build-up of dust looking from Earth's local neighbourhood to about 13,000 light years towards the galactic centre —around 10% of the overall distance across the Milky Way.Close by,dust swirls all around but, further out,the concentration of dust along the galactic plane (银道面) becomes clear. Two “windows”,one above and one below the galactic plane, are also revealed.
“Dust clouds are related to the birth and death of stars,so their distribution tells a story of how structures formed in the galaxy and how the galaxy evolves,” said Nick Cox,coordinator of the EXPLORE project which is developing the tools.“The maps are also important for cosmologists (宇宙学家) in revealing regions where there is no dust, allowing us to have a clear, unobstructed view out of the Milky Way.This helps in studying the universe beyond, such as to make deep-field observations with Hubble or the new James Webb Space Telescope.”
“State-of-the-art machine learning and visual analytics have the power to greatly enhance scientific return and discovery for space science missions, but their use is still relatively novel in the field of astronomy,” said Albert Zijlstra of the University of Manchester and the EXPLORE project.“With a constant stream of new data,we have an increasing wealth of information to mine—way beyond the scope of what humans could process in a lifetime. We need tools like the ones we are developing for EXPLORE to support scientific discovery, such as by helping us to characterise properties within the data,or to pick out the most interesting or unusual features and structures.”

I'm Li Hua,from Class 1. There are some topics popping up (冒出来) in my mind and I am glad to share them with you, hoping they can give you some inspiration.
To begin with,I'd like to recommend travel and adventures.Talking in English about travel and adventures enables us to share exciting experiences, explore new places, and have conversations that spark(激起) our curiosity and desire for cultural discovery. What's more,“my best friend” might be a good option, for it bridges (弥合) distance and helps us build a stronger bond with our friends. So,targeted at refining(改善) English fluency, these topics will provide us with the necessary resources to take our English-speaking abilities to new heights.
Hope my recommendations can be of some help.

(2024·甘肃兰州诊断考试)The snowstorm was supposed to hit on the evening of Monday, 31 January 2022. My colleague and I were co-signing an emergency financial aid check for a student at First Nations University of Canada in Regina, then he left for the day. As I was packing up, I noticed he had left his laptop bag there.
“Shoot,” he said when I called him. “I'm already home.”
“I can bring it to you,” I assured him. It was just past 4:30 p.m. The snow wasn't supposed to start until later. It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague's house, where I dropped off the laptop case and got right back on the road. Then suddenly the snow started—and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout.
The road soon switched from paving to gravel (碎石),forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow. It was extremely cold outside. I didn't have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911, but they said nobody was coming to get me until morning at the earliest.
It was now about 6 p.m. and dark. I stopped the car and texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returned. But he had an idea. “Pin your location and send it to me,” he said. I did, and a few minutes later he texted me back a screenshot of the satellite view of where I was. We figured out that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, in between two farms. It was now 6:30 p.m.We posted this new information to our community group, pleading (恳求) for anyone who knew who lived on the farms to help me get rescued.
Soon enough, though, people started chiming in (发表评论) on my post. They knew the farmer who lived there! I got a message from someone who was going to put me in touch with him.

At 8 p.m., my cell phone rang. It was the farmer who owned the land beside the road I was stranded on. He told me that he was coming to get me. Then, about 45 minutes later, I saw a tall figure walking towards me in the dark, and I'd never been more relieved to see someone in my life.“Hey,” he shouted, with his voice steady, “follow me in your car. You'll be OK.” I drove slowly behind him. When we reached the house, I got out of the car and burst into tears, all my fears turning into relief and gratitude.
By 5:30 the next morning, walking out of the house, I found two people on the driveway. It was the farmer and my colleague! They had cleared the snow from the driveway so that we could all get out and drive home. My colleague came up to me and said that he felt sorry about me all night long, and he joked that my good deeds had turned into a disaster. But as for me, “All is well that ends well.” And best of all, it brought the farmer into my life. We're still in touch, and I know we'll be friends forever.
