Rock music meets the erhu
1 Rock music is coming out of my computer. As a rock music lover, I play the electric guitar in the school band. Sometimes I write songs and share them online. There is so much fun in music.
2 Right at this moment, the sound of Grandpa’s erhu cuts in. Yes, music is also my grandpa’s hobby. But it’s a different kind of music. He likes playing the erhu in the park with his friends. They sing Beijing opera together. There are many fans of them.
3 An idea suddenly hit me: “Why don’t we put our music together? I can write a song for us.”
4 “Grandpa!” I rushed into his room...
5 There is an art festival every autumn in my school. I decided to take part in it with Grandpa this year. After a week’s practice, we were on the stage. I nodded to Grandpa and we fired up our instruments. Everybody moved with our music.
6 Grandpa gave me a big smile, and I smiled back. It felt great to enjoy our hobby together.
5. What is the boy’s hobby?

C
How did you spend your last holiday? Did you just watch videos on your phone all day? If so, you’re not alone. Many people spend too much time online.
Think about it—what do we usually do online? For most of us, it’s just watching short videos. These videos may seem fun, but they don’t really help us unwind. In fact, they just make us lazy in thinking. The Oxford Word of the Year, “brain rot (腐化),” best sums up (概括) this problem.
But how did we get here? And what can we do now?
Scrolling (滚动) through these kinds of short videos is like eating snacks (零食). Once we start, it’s hard to stop. It’s an easy way to kill time. Instead of going outside or trying a new hobby, many of us just stay on the sofa, staring (盯着看) at our phones.
However, this “easy fun” comes at a price. The more time we spend online, the less real-life joy we experience. While we are having a “good” time on some popular apps, we miss the wonders of the real world. Over time, we feel like our lives are getting more and more boring.
It’s time to bring back “real fun”. Go outside with your friends or family and enjoy the beauty of nature. Breathe (呼吸) in the fresh air. Walk in the warm sunlight. Listen to birds singing to brighten your day. Just don’t let your screens control your free time and don’t leave your brain “rotting”!
9. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking questions.
C. By giving an example. D. By listing some numbers.
10. What does the underlined word “unwind” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Work. B. Practice. C. Relax. D. Understand.
11. Which of the following is an example of “brain rot”?
A. Going outside. B. Trying a new hobby.
C. Eating snacks. D. Watching short videos.
12. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advise us to avoid “brain rot”. B. To tell us to bring back “easy fun”.
C. To lead us to breathe in the fresh air. D. To encourage us to enjoy our holiday.
D
Do you ever wish for a better memory during the exam season? If Doraemon were your friend, he might give you his “Memory Bread”. Wait, don’t know who Doraemon is?
Doraemon is a round, blue-and-white robotic cat from the 22nd century. He travels back in time to help Nobita (大雄), a kind but lazy boy. Nobita often has trouble with school and life. Doraemon uses tools from the future to solve the boy’s problems.
The robotic cat created by two Japanese artists, first appeared in a magazine in 1969. Since then, he has won the hearts of millions around the world through TV shows, movies and more.
One big reason for his popularity is the 4D pocket on his belly. This magic pocket holds many amazing tools. The “Anywhere Door” is a pink door. Just think of a place, step through the door and there you are. The “Take-copter” is a tiny fan. You can fly as soon as you put it on your head. And if you press “Memory Bread” onto a page and eat it, you’ll be able to remember everything on that page. These fun inventions make Doraemon exciting to watch.
But Doraemon is more than fun. It also teaches valuable lessons. In the “Memory Bread” episode (集), for example, Nobita eats too much bread and gets a stomachache. In the end, all the knowledge he ate ends up in the toilet. The message is clear: There’s no shortcut (捷径) to learning.
So, kids, though it’s fun to dream of magic tools, you already have the power to learn and grow. Even without “Memory Bread”, you can still perform well on your own.
13. The writer mentions the “Memory Bread” at the beginning of the passage to ________.
A. explain one of Doraemon’s most powerful tools
B. show that Nobita is a lazy boy with poor study habits
C. attract readers’ interest by connecting it with exams
D. prove Doraemon’s inventions can be helpful in real life
14. How does the writer introduce Doraemon to readers?
A. By telling them that two Japanese artists created Doraemon.
B. By describing what Doraemon looks like and how he helps Nobita.
C. By saying that Doraemon has won the hearts of millions around the world.
D. By explaining how Doraemon uses future tools to solve Nobita’s problems.
15. The writer writes the last paragraph mainly to ________.
A. encourage hard work and confidence in learning
B. show that tools like “Memory Bread” could be harmful to users
C. warn readers not to eat too much “Memory Bread” like Nobita did
D. tell readers not to watch cartoons like Doraemon during the exam season
16. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Fun of Doraemon’s stories
B. Power of learning by yourself
C Doraemon’s magic tools
D. The lessons from Doraemon

When it comes to preparing for exams, different countries have their own ways. What do you usually do before exams? Are there any special traditions in your country?
In China, we have some interesting traditions for some important exams. We often eat zongzi, the word “zong” sounds like “success” in Chinese, which means getting high scores. Additionally (另外), some students prefer to wear red clothes or socks because the color red is the symbol of joy and good luck in Chinese culture. In recent years, it has become popular for mothers to wear qipao (a traditional Chinese dress) to wish their children to get victory in the exam, as its name carries the meaning “qi kai de sheng”.
Xie Guoliang,15, Jiangsu
In South Korea, we give our friends sticky rice (糯米) cakes and candies before exams. This is because the word “stick” sounds like “pass” in Korean. People believe that eating sticky food helps students “stick” to success and pass their tests. I remember when my best friend had a big test, I bought his favorite sticky rice cakes to cheer him up. This tradition makes us feel warm and confident during stressful exam time.
Chulkyu Lee, 18, South Korea
In the US, we have different habits before exams. Some wear “lucky” clothes, like special socks or underwear (内衣) for good luck. Others do simple things, like doing exercise or eating snacks that they think are lucky.
I always use the same special pencil for exams. I feel it helps me do better. These small traditions help me feel calm and focused.

Do you ever wish for a better memory during the exam season? If Doraemon were your friend, he might give you his “Memory Bread”. Wait, don’t know who Doraemon is?
Doraemon is a round blue-and-white robotic cat from the 22nd century. He travels back in time to help Nobita (大雄), a kind but lazy boy. Nobita often has trouble with school and life. Doraemon uses tools from the future to solve the boy’s problems.
The robotic cat, created by two Japanese artists, first appeared in a magazine in 1969.

D. By explaining how Doraemon uses future tools to solve Nobita’s problems.
