I always made more money than most people of my age did. But it still stressed me out, and I felt like I never had enough. After coming across The School of Betty, a platform that enables women to create relationships with their money, I found myself inspired to do a no-spend month challenge. The result? I saved more than $1,000. It was like finding money in my winter coat pocket after a long summer. ③The most eye-opening thing a no-spend challenge can do for you is shedding light on the emotions you have around your money and the behaviors that have become a habit. Most individuals don’t realize they are spending out of habit and based on their emotions. ②Figuring out the causes and knowing I was able to save a good sum of money in only 30 days, I set out to do a longer challenge—three months. As for the first challenge, I was only allowed to buy essentials, which meant my normal bills—lighting, phone, car insurance, gas, oil and groceries. But in my 90-day challenge, I further removed all of the extras—no new clothes, no new shoes, and no lunches at restaurants. I allowed myself one night out with friends per month—to avoid going crazy—but I stuck to a budget. This also allowed me to see what type of experience was worth my money and what type was wasting my money. 90 days later, my jaw hit the floor when I ①totaled my savings: I was almost $4,000 richer. The rewards were more than financial: I was able to distinguish between my needs and my wants. The process enabled me to spot purchases driven by emotions. Even better, I shifted the way I valued money: The money I spent socializing with friends felt far more valuable than the pleasure of purchasing, say, two new sweaters. He ultimately chose the option concerning charting the hyperlinks between sites, which later permanently changed the way we navigate (浏览) the Internet and earned Page around $100 billion. Research shows people rarely assess the value of their own ideas accurately. This means that we often fail to see the potential in our best ideas, leading us to jettison them and waste time on less promising ventures.Fortunately, these studies also suggest some clever ways to avoid making this mistake. One insightful study comes from Professor Justin Berg at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. In his experiments, he asked participants to invent new products or services. The participants first ①brainstormed a list of ideas, which they ranked in order of preference, after which they were given more time to develop their concepts.A team of independent judges then ②rated the quality of the final designs. Berg found that in general, the participants preferred the concepts that were the most concrete and which initially appeared to be the easiest to apply. This meant that they often overlooked slightly more abstract ideas that were not immediately practical. With development, however, the potential uses of the abstract ideas soon became apparent—leading them to be more popular with the independent judges. As Berg’s results show, we may be consistently missing out on our best ideas. One way to improve our judgment may be to encourage the right kind of ③reflective thinking. Berg, for instance, found he could improve participants’ forecasts by asking them to justify why they had chosen their rankings. With extra thought, an abstract idea that initially appeared less promising will begin to gain substance and might soon start to seem more exciting. We may never know what made Larry Page leave his other ideas, but the above technique can help us identify the projects with the greatest potential. We can sift (挑选) the gold from the debris of our creativity and never risk wasting a trillion-dollar idea. 5 6 7 8 5.What does the underlined word “jettison” in paragraph 2 mean?( ) A.Assess. B.Abandon. C.Transform. D.Challenge. 6.What did Berg’s experiments reveal about the participants?( ) A.They often neglected less practical ideas initially. B.They took into account the judges’ preferences. C.They favored abstract ideas over concrete ones. D.They tended to choose ideas with great potential. 根据第四段前两句“Berg found that in general, the participants...This meant that they often overlooked slightly more abstract ideas that were not immediately practical.” 5 6 7 8 7.Which of the following shows “reflective thinking”?( ) A.Sticking to the initial rankings. B.Appreciating the ideas of others. C.Looking at the positive side of an option. D.Exploring the motivations behind our choices. 根据题干中reflective thinking定位到第五段,由该段第二、三句“...to encourage the right kind of reflective thinking...by asking them to justify why they had chosen their rankings.” 5 6 7 8 8.Which is the most suitable title for the text?( ) A.How to Identify Truly Great Ideas B.Why We Are Poor Decision-Makers C.How to Choose a Promising Paper Topic D.Why Our Brain Favors the Concrete Ideas A 5 6 7 8 解析:标题归纳题。 5 6 7 8 [语境猜词] ①brainstorm (合) ____________________ [brain n. Francis Collins is one of America’s leading scientists. There were doubts of permanent paralysis (瘫痪)—the very mention of which was enough to break us down. From finding it extremely painful to walk, to not being able to get up on his own, and to not being able to stand at all, Ted had a problem that was worsening day by day. Most surprisingly, all this while, he was strong.Perhaps only children could be in such difficult times. During this period, it was not unusual for my mother to have sudden breakdowns. Once, she burst into tears while watching Ted playing joyfully. He wiped off her tears, and said,“Don’t cry, Mummy.See, I can stand and even run on my own!”Saying this, he tried to get up, stood on shaking legs for just about a few microseconds and fell down, only to be safely caught in the arms of my mom, who hugged him dearly and cried again. This was the most heartbreaking thing that I had ever experienced. But it was also a powerful one for the simple fact that it was my little brother who taught us what life was all about—HOPE. Witnessing my brother’s strong will and positive attitude inspired me as well.As a brother, I could not stand by doing nothing at all.Hope was burning in my heart when I had the idea to train my brother to walk again.I firmly believed Ted could stand up and walk as he used to.Whenever school was over, I would put Ted into a pushchair and tell my mom that we’d just go to the park. In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk._____________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ We agreed to keep this secret from our parents until Mom’s birthday. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] In the park,I would put Ted one meter away from me,encouraging him to walk.At first,he could not even move an inch without falling down. But instead of getting discouraged,he would keep trying until he finally managed to take a few steps forward with the support of my hands.Gradually,Ted learned to balance himself and began to walk slowly but steadily. The park became our secret place where we spent hours every day, I patiently guiding him and Ted determinedly working on his mobility.  We agreed to keep this secret from our parents until Mom’s birthday. On that day, while everyone was enjoying a family lunch,Ted suddenly stood up from his chair and took a few unsteady steps towards our mother. Her eyes widened as she watched her son,who had been unable to walk for some time, now taking small, confident steps towards her, which was such a heartwarming moment for all of us.From that day on,Ted’s progress was nothing short of a miracle, and our family was overjoyed to see him regaining his strength and mobility.
