Positive Body Language Can Help Your Career
If you are currently completing an internship(实习) or you have a new job, employers tend to look for small details when evaluating the effectiveness of your performance, and this includes body language.❶
Your body language forms an impression to your employers.A smile of a frown translates into an opinion.Body language can be used to determine if you are hardworking, resultoriented (注意结果的),or lazy.If you are always fidgeting (坐立不安),yawning or staring the window when you are conversing with your boss, then this gives an impression that you are always distracted and you cannot concentrate for long periods.
You can effortlessly prevent these career risks by simply putting positive body language to use.The key body language practices that you should put into consideration are simple to carry out and most importantly will create the professional impression to help you succeed in your job.❷
Don’t forget to smile
A smile is always welcoming, and it shows people your warmth and that you are friendly.Even if your boss frowns at you,you just smile back.Show a professional image-you are approachable and welcoming.
Remember the importance of eye contact
Making eye contact gives the impression that you are concentrating on what you are being told and you are more likely to perform the instructions with acute precision.❸Poor eye contact demonstrates a lack of confidence, immaturity and can be considered a demonstration of low selfesteem (自尊).
Listen and be interested
Finally, you should have a genuine interest in what you are being told.Don’t be afraid to ask questions to help improve your knowledge and understaning.
Avoid the career trap associated with negative body language.Negativity can easily be spotted around the office and will be remembered by management when the time comes for salary increases, promotions and recognition.

A French biochemist named Pierre Calleja has developed a street light that also cleans carbon dioxide out of the air and produces oxygen using green algae (藻).❶
Algae exists, for the most part,in the water and feeds on light through photosynthesis(光合作用) and carbon.Researchers are working on a number of ways to use algae for food, fertilizer,a source of biofuels, and as a means of dealing with industrial waste water.
Calleja’s idea is to take an electric light and surround it with a cylinder (圆筒)filled with water with algea floating in it.The result is a street light that gives out green light, like something on the set of a 1950s sciencefiction movie, and breathes in carbon dioxide and breathes out oxygen. Such lights could be placed in public areas where carbon is heavily produced, such as streets ard parking garages.❷ Calleja is working with a team from a company called Fermentalg which is attempting to develop algaebased products ranging from biofuels to cosmetics(化妆品).
Even if one does not agree with the idea of global warming, the idea of setting up what are in effect natural air cleaners where cars drive by has a certain appeal. On the other hand, many ideas that are technologically sound and seem to serve a useful purpose will be costly.A typical city would likely have thousands of these green algae street lights, which would cost more to build and use than ordinary lights. Will the benefits of cleaner air with the savings on health costs be worth the price?
Then there is an aesthetic(美学的) issue of filling the urban night air with green lights. Some will no doubt find the effect beautiful.Others will be extremely scared in the night.Could there be some methods to make the light a warmer and brighter color? The answer to these and other questions will determine whether Calleja’s idea becomes a reality.

Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids.
According to a new survey (调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 p.m.or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early.❶ Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7to 12yearolds said they felt tired during the day,and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school.
How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age.Babies need a lot of rest:most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most schoolage children, ten hours is ideal (理想的).But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10to 12yearolds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.
“More children are going to bed with TVs on,and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr.Mary Carskadon,a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep.❷ Other experts say part of the problem is chemical.Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 p.m.❸
Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to.Three years ago, schools in Edina,Minnesota, changed the start time from 7: 25 a.m.to 8: 30 a.m.Students,parents and teachers are pleased with the results.

动词says后接宾语从句;宾语从句中含有“make+形式宾语it+宾语补足语+for sb.to do sth.”
作主语;过去分词短语called hormones在句中作后置定语;not only...but also...
