Levi Draheim,11 years old,and 20 other young people have accused(控告)the US government of encouraging the climate change. For more than a century, human activities have been increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. That has caused a host of effects globally, from changes in weather to ice melting at the poles.
Levi lives in Satellite Beach,Fla.He once had to leave his home because of strong storms.Heavy rains flooded the town's streets. And he had trouble breathing during red tides, which can develop when harmful ocean algae(海藻)grow out of control.
Climate change is making these events more frequent.Levi and his family also have another climate-change-related problem.Sea level is rising.“If climate change worsens, the island that I live on will be gone.”he explained.
The young people say the US government allowed the use of fossil fuels(矿物燃料).Burning those fuels gives off greenhouse gases, driving climate change. The youths want the government to solve the problem of pollution. So they took the government to court in 2015.
The case has had several holdups. In the beginning, the government asked the trial court (初审法庭)to refuse to accept the case. The court didn't do that. Then they turned to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. That court said the case could go ahead, and the Supreme Court agreed. Both sides did work to get ready for trial. But the government again tried to get the case thrown out without a trial.
Finally, trial was set to start on October 29,2018.But on October 19,the US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts told the trial court to hold up.The youths' lawyers objected. On November 2,the Supreme Court finally agreed that the trial could go forward.Right now,it is hard to say when that will happen.

My name is Chelsea Chowderhead.A chowder is a kind of soup.I was laughed at because of my last name as soon as I started school. So when my family moved to South Carolina,I asked my dad if I could change my name.
“You shouldn't change who you are.Let people get to know you first and your name later. When you meet someone new,ask them a good question, something you're really interested in.Once people start talking about themselves, they don't judge(评价)you.”
Two days later I headed to my new school for the first day of class. At lunch,I noticed that there were twin brothers who were talking to each other.I remembered my dad's advice,so I decided to try.
I noticed that their lunch boxes were identical.“What's it like being a twin?” I asked.
They looked surprised. Then one said,“No one has ever asked us that!”
“Most of the time it's good,” the other said.“When you're a twin you always have someone to talk to and have lunch with.”
In no time we were laughing and talking. Then one of the brothers said,“I'm Nicholas, and this is my brother,Nathaniel. What's your name?”
I took a deep breath and said,“I'm Chelsea Chowderhead.”
“Chowder?Like the soup?” asked Nathaniel.
“Yes,” I replied,looking down.
“Hey,cool!Do you want to come over after school and play basketball with us?” Nathaniel asked.I nodded.

According to Time magazine, there are at least five million tons of plastic in the ocean.Certain sea animals often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish (水母)to eat, which can kill them.Fish, penguins and other bird species often get plastic chains stuck on their legs or necks, slowly killing them.
Though there's no question that plastic products have brought great convenience to our life, they do harm to the world we are living in.Luckily, there are new, clean products of all kinds to replace them all.
As we all know, disposable(一次性的)plastic water bottles are not only wasteful but also expensive. This is a simple problem to solve:we stop producing disposable plastic bottles and start using reusable water bottles. But what can we do with the plastic bottles that have already been made?We can follow the instructions from those YouTube videos and use these materials that take 200 years to break down to build houses. That immediately saves money on building and saves trees.
To replace plastic bags, there are new recyclable bags made of cassava,a kind of root vegetable. The company that makes them is in Indonesia, and they made them to try to save the country from drowning in plastic.Another replacement of plastic is reusable shopping bags. They're stronger than plastic bags,so there's no chance of your milk falling out and breaking on the road as you walk your car.
For those that cook, there's also a replacement for plastic wrap,Bee's wrap.It costs at least $18 for a pack of three, but because they can be reused,it still saves money. These are just some of the many choices the world has for replacing plastic.Any company in the world can make use of these methods to create and sell environmentally friendly products.
The point is that it is possible to replace plastic. Plastic needs to be thrown away once and for all.Not only is it harmful to nearly every aspect of the environment, but it makes the world ugly.

Getting stitched(缝合)up by Dr. Robot may one day be reality.Scientists have created a robotic system which just did that in living animals without a real doctor pulling the strings.Much like engineers are designing self-driving cars, the medical research is part of a move toward autonomous surgical robots, removing the surgeon's hands from certain tasks that a machine might perform all by itself.
Doctors wouldn't leave the bedside where they're supposed to watch.Plus they'd handle the rest of the surgery. In small tests using pigs, the robotic arm performed at least as well, and in some cases a bit better,as some competing surgeons in stitching together intestinal(肠的)tissue.“The purpose wasn't to replace surgeons,” said Dr.Kim who led the project.“If you have an intelligent tool that works with a surgeon, can it improve the outcome? That's what we have done.”
If you've heard about machines like the popular Da Vinci system, you might think robots already are operating. Not really.Today many hospitals offer robot-assisted surgery where surgeons use the machinery as tools that they control by hand to operate through tiny openings in the body. But robot-assisted surgery has been controversial,as some studies have shown it can bring higher costs without better outcomes.
Kim's team at Children's Sheikh Zayed Institute invented the new STAR system—it stands for Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot—works sort of like a programmable sewing machine. They added sensors to help guide each stitch and tell how tightly to pull. But the approach wasn't perfect. In the living animals, the robot took much longer and made a few stitching mistakes while the surgeon sewing by hand made none.Kim said the robot can be sped up.He hopes to begin human studies in two or three years.

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Friendships made in school play a special part in young people's development. But just what is it that makes an ideal(理想的)friend? Is it that they should be friendly and helpful?Or they should be supportive in times of danger or difficulty? For the past six years,my working partners and I have been carrying out the WISERD Education study with pupils in secondary schools to increase our understanding of the lives of young people in Wales. We are especially interested in making out what young people think of their friendship networks.
We find that a good sense of humor(82%),honesty(67%)and kindness(61%)are the top three qualities(品质)that these young people value most in their friendships. An interesting point is the qualities that young people consider least important in an ideal friend.Despite the television culture described by popular shows, the young people think being goodlooking(2%),fashionable(3%),rich(3%)and popular(4%)as the least important qualities that they look for in ideal friends.
What's more,we receive interesting answers when asking the pupils whether they have friends who are of a different gender(性别)or race at school,Some 84%say they have friends of a different gender at school and 6l%tell us that they have friends of different races at school. This suggests that young people today are fairly openminded, and interested in contacting with“other”people who don't just look like them but have the same opinions as them.
Our study also supports the research from England, brought out in 2006,which has found that young people want to be part of strong, safe communities based on friendships. It can develop trust, concern for personal wellbeing,a sense of selfworth and encourage personal and collective social responsibility. These positive(积极的) friendships will hopefully result in these young people having more complete social activities and development in their community life as they grow up.
