Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
During my elementary school years,I used to compare my mom with my best friend Tiffany's mum.
Tiffany's mum always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable clothes and favorite food. Her mum allowed her to do anything she liked.I really admired Tiffany. My mum didn't give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself. I was annoyed with her.
Whenever I didn't get what I wanted,I would complain to my mum,“Tiffany's mum would give her that!I wish she were my mum.”Every time,my mum would say calmly,“Poor Tiffany.”I couldn't understand her.“She shouldn't be feeling sorry for Tiffany!”I thought,“She should be feeling sorry for me.”
One day,I couldn't help saying to my mum.“Poor Tiffany?Lucky Tiffany! She gets everything she wants! Why do you feel sorry for her?”I burst into tears.
My mum sat down next to me and said softly,“Yes,I do feel sorry for her.I have been teaching you a lesson that she will never be taught.”
I looked up at her,“What are you talking about?”
Mum said with care,“One day she will really want something.Maybe she'll find out that she can't have it.Her mother won't always be around to give her money, and what's more, money can't buy everything.”
She continued,“I have taught you valuable lessons by not giving you everything you want. You'll know how to look for bargains and save money, but she won't.You'll understand that you need to work to get the things you want but she won't.When Tiffany is a grown woman, she'll wake up one day and she will be wishing that she had a mum like the one you've got.Life lessons are more important than modern clothes and delicious food.”
It took some time, but I eventually understood my mum's words. Now I am a happy and successful woman.

After attending another teacherparent meeting regarding my 7yearold child's behavior,I didn't know what to do.It was the second school we had tried for Nathan and,as always, everything was being done for my child's needs. It was also having bad effects on Nathan. He would come home and say,“Mom,I hate my life.I do not want to live anymore.”I was afraid that my son was beginning to suffer from depression and that I was losing him.We needed help.
By the age of seven,Nathan had already had three surgeries(外科手术)for his ears.He was in great pain, regardless of pain medication.which made it difficult for him to learn or pay attention.Despite Nathan's bad condition, staff at two previous schools seemed as if they didn't care. They often forgot to deal with his medication(药剂).As a result of many times of ear infections,Nathan had hearing loss.To make things worse,Nathan's speech was not very good. Children would play a trick on him and Nathan began to fall behind in study.
When I first set foot into Ripley House Charter School,I knew this was the school for my son.I felt positive from the moment I entered. From the start,Mrs Elsen and her staff heard my concern over Nathan.Mrs Elsen addressed my concern, not with empty words but with action.
That day,Nathan came home from his first day of school saying,“Mom,I love school!”By the end of the week he was saying.“Morn,I like my life.I have a good life.”Ripley House Charter School gave me my son back and saved our lives.Thank you for giving me back what we had lost—HOPE.

One Sunday morning,George Thomas,a_baker in a small New England town, was walking through the town when he saw a little boy coming toward him, swinging(挥舞)a bird cage in the air.On the bottom of the_cage,here were three little wild birds shaking with cold and fear.George Thomas stopped the_boy and asked him what he got there.
The boy was happy and told him that there were just some old birds in the cage. When the baker asked him what he would do with the old birds. The boy said casually(漫不经心地)that he wanted to take_the_brids_home and play with them.He would pull out their feathers to make them fight. He would have a really good time because he would enjoy watching these.
George Thomas was shocked by what the boy said. How could a boy be so rude to wild animals? So he continued to ask the boy what he would do to the birds when he got tired of them, because he was such a naughty and cruel boy that he was sure to be tired of them sooner or later. The boy laughed and said that he had a cat, which liked birds,so he would give the birds to his cat.The baker got more worried and decided to help set_free the poor birds. So he asked,“How much do you want for the birds, son?”
The boy looked at him in surprise, wondering if the baker really wanted to buy them.He laughed and reminded the man that they were just plain old field birds. They didn't sing and they were not even pretty. However, the baker insisted and continued to ask him how much money he wanted for the birds.
The boy stared at the baker as if he were crazy and said,“$ 10?”
