For four years, Tina Jones, a New Zealand interior-design business owner, has inspired others to join her in supporting community causes. She finds joy in volunteering, believing it benefits both recipients (接受者) and herself. Motivated by this, she now creates opportunities for others to contribute easily.
Tina started a Facebook Messenger group, uniting 40 local women with the goal of helping those in need. When she identifies a cause — such as collecting Foodbank supplies, items for homeless shelters, or essentials for Women’s Refuge — she messages the group. Her home becomes a central collection point, making it easier for participants to contribute.
“It’s about saying, ‘Here’s a chance to help — join if you can.’ People respond amazingly,” Tina explains. The approach removes barriers to giving, enabling others to contribute effortlessly without organizing efforts themselves.
Tina admits that while her method is irregular, it suits her current schedule and lifts her spirits. “I don’t commit to ongoing volunteer roles yet, but short-term actions work well. As someone who enjoys communication, bringing people together feels natural,” she says.
When her children were younger, school-linked projects kept her involved. After they grew up, Tina sought new ways to make a difference. Her flexible model has proven successful, promoting teamwork and positivity.
“Together, we’re improving lives in small but meaningful ways — spreading kindness and building connections. It’s rewarding, especially during tough times,” she adds.
Tina highlights that volunteering doesn’t have to involve strict schedules or long hours, a key reason, why her approach appeals to many. By simplifying generosity, she empowers busy individuals to participate in small, manageable acts of goodwill, creating collective impact while strengthening community bonds.
24.What inspired Tina to create opportunities for others to volunteer?
A.Her experience as a designer.
B.Her fondness for communication.
C.Encouragement from community leaders.
D.Happiness and benefits from volunteering.
25.How does Tina’s Facebook Messenger group work?
A.Tina organizes big events for members to join.
B.Tina shares requests and uses her home as a drop-off point.
C.Members must attend the weekly planning meeting.
D.Members are required to meet a donation minimum.
26.Why does Tina’s volunteering approach appeal to so many people?
A.It guarantees public recognition.
B.It focuses on fundraising for schools.
C.It demands strict schedules and long hours.
D.It simplifies generosity through manageable acts.
27.What lesson can be learned from Tina’s experience?
A.Not all that shines is gold. B.Rome wasn’t built in a day.
C.Many hands make light work. D.The early bird catches the worm.
C
Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might affect the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long-term absence (缺席) of a parent had more emotional or behavioral problems than those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found a high percentage of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
28.Why did the researcher study the 3,000 students?
A.To find out how many of them lived with only one parent.
B.To find out how the parents’ absence affected the children.
C.To find out what jobs their parents were interested in doing.
D.To find out whether they helped their parents do housework.
29.What might be the result due to the long absence of parents?
A.Helping the children to be more independent. B.Encouraging the children to enjoy quietness.
C.Causing emotional problems to their children. D.Inspiring the children to stay closer to them.
30.What kind of parents can be called “potted plant” parents?
A.Those who stay with their children and teach them gardening.
B.Those who stay away from their children and give them freedom.
C.Those who stay close to their children and keep talking with them.
D.Those who stay with their children and keep silent most of the time.
31.What is the kids’ attitude towards freedom given by their parents?
A.Positive. B.Critical. C.Disappointed. D.Disagreeable.
D
As an important part of our everyday lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment. Besides proving very useful in cancer treatment, managing long-term pain and even helping the brain recover after a stroke, researchers have been making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia (失智症). It reduces patients’ anxiety or stress, lifts their spirits, and improves their performance at work.
So why does music appear to have such a powerful effect on people with dementia? About ten years ago, researchers discovered that when people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing it. Research has also shown music might help the brain and its connections grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with dementia by fixing or strengthening damaged neural (神经的) connections and cells.
It’s not just any music that has a great effect on the brain, though. Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest influence on the way we feel, and is closely connected with memory and emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙) that give us a sense of pleasure. During and after listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved.
Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music training programs to support cognition (认知) for people with dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study showing improved conditions, compared to those who took part in just physical exercise.
So, music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for people with dementia. But based on what we know so far, it’s important that it comes from the patient’s own music collection and is used together with other medical treatments such as taking medicine.
32.How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A.By presenting facts. B.By raising questions.
C.By explaining reasons. D.By giving predictions.
33.What may familiar and favourite music contribute to people with dementia?
A.It reduces emotional stress. B.It advances creative thinking.
C.It enriches work experience. D.It develops learning strategies.
34.What does the underlined word “promising” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Changeable. B.Confusing. C.Hopeful. D.Normal.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A course plan. B.An art brochure.
C.A medical textbook. D.A science magazine.

25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Tina started a Facebook Messenger group, uniting 40 local women with the goal of helping those in need. When she identifies a cause — such as collecting Foodbank supplies, items for homeless shelters, or essentials for Women’s Refuge — she messages the group. Her home becomes a central collection point, making it easier for participants to contribute.(蒂娜成立了一个Facebook Messenger群,将40名当地女性团结起来,目标是帮助有需要的人。当她确定一个事业时——比如收集食品银行的物资、无家可归者收容所的物品或妇女避难所的必需品——她就会给这个群发信息。她的家成为一个集中收集点,方便参与者捐款)”可知,蒂娜的Facebook群组通过分享需求信息,并利用她的家作为物资收集点来运作。故选B。

【答案】28.B 29.C 30.D 31.A
根据第一段中“The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might affect the health of their children.(研究人员想知道这些“飞来飞去”的父母的工作如何影响他们孩子的健康)”可知,研究人员研究这3000名学生是为了找出父母不在身边会对孩子产生什么影响。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long-term absence (缺席) of a parent had more emotional or behavioral problems than those whose parents worked more traditional hours.(与那些父母工作时间较为传统的青少年相比,经历过父母长期缺席的青少年中,有更高比例的人存在更多的情感或行为问题)” 可知,父母长期缺席可能导致孩子出现情感问题。故选C项。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.(研究结果还表明,父母不必一直呆在家里,但在某些时候呆在家里是有帮助的。对青少年来说,最好的父母有时就像一盆盆栽植物)” 以及第四段中“Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework.(许多青少年的父母都知道这是真的,并找到了不试图开始谈话的方法。我的一个朋友每天晚上在客厅里静静地做家务,她的孩子们在那里看电视。他们喜欢彼此的陪伴,不需要说话。另一位朋友通常会接受女儿的邀请,在女儿坐着做作业的时候到她身边工作或看书)”可推知,“盆栽式”的父母是指那些陪伴在孩子身边,但大部分时间保持沉默,不一定要和孩子交谈的父母。故选D项。
31.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.(也许我们的青少年就像婴儿一样,当父母还在身边的时候,他们会感到最自在。他们不想远离给他们自由的父母)”可知,孩子们不想远离给予他们自由的父母,说明他们对父母给予的自由持积极态度。故选A项。
