Unit 7 B Reading and critical thinking 教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Understand the blog post about how global warming affects polar bears, master related vocabulary, and extract key information about the cause - and - effect relationship.
Develop reading skills like choosing best answers, completing messages and passages, and enhance critical thinking abilities through reviewing, understanding, and applying information about polar bears and global warming.
Be able to retell the impact of global warming on polar bears in own words and discuss related details, using correct vocabulary and sentence structures.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key words & phrases
global warming, polar bears, Arctic, ice, melt, sea level, hunting ground, homeless, fuel, climate, cause - and - effect, suffix “-less” (homeless, helpless), energy, freeze, save, hunt for, as a result, let... down, come up
2. Key sentences
We use fuel for energy, but it is making the climate warmer. As a result, the ice melts, and the sea level rises. It is bad news for polar bears!
Polar bears live in the cold Arctic. The frozen Arctic is their home and the ice is their hunting ground. A polar bear usually stands on the sea ice to hunt for seals when they come up for air.
But the ice has started to melt earlier each year. As the ice melts, some polar bears have lost their homes. Homeless polar bears have to move from ice to land earlier and stay on land longer. They become very hungry because they can’t find enough food.
These changes are a result of global warming. Global warming is making life difficult for polar bears. Their future is in our hands. We mustn’t let them down. Let’s save polar bears!
The Sun gives us light and energy every day.
Ice and snow melt in warm temperatures.
If the ground is frozen, it has become very hard because the weather is very cold.
If someone has no home, we say that he is homeless.
If you save someone or something, you help them stay away from harm or danger.
The Arctic is at the top of the world. It is a huge ocean with frozen snow and ice all year round. Arctic animals like polar bears and arctic foxes usually have thick fur to keep energy in their body. One interesting fact is that many are as white as snow. That’s how they save themselves. Sadly, as the Earth gets warmer, more and more ice is melting, and it has made some animals homeless.
Seals are an example of why sea ice matters. Mother seals usually put their babies on ice to feed them before they can hunt for food by themselves. However, as the ice melts more quickly, the first six weeks of the seals’ lives are not in one’s hands any more. They have to get into the cold water earlier. They may not find enough food to eat. Moving ice makes it hard for them to come up for air. As a result, seals are in great danger. If we don’t take action, we will let them down.
3. Key and challenging points
Comprehend the blog post about polar bears and global warming, and complete related reading tasks (choose best answers, complete message, fill cause - and - effect chain).
Use correct forms of words (including those with suffix “-less”) to complete sentences and passages about the Arctic and seals.
Think critically about the impact of global warming on polar bears, review picture order, understand supporting details, and apply information to strengthen the blog post, demonstrating understanding and application of English.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Lead - in
Ask: How does global warming affect animals? Have you heard about polar bears' situation? Invite Ss to share. Then say: Today, we'll read a blog post about polar bears in a warming world to find out.
Step 2 Reading & Comprehension
Work on Activity B1
T: Choose the best answers about the text (main idea, writer's purpose). Use reading for main idea and context clues.
Ask Ss to read the questions and text, choose answers. Then check, explaining why (e.g., text focuses on polar bears in danger due to global warming).
Work on Activity B2
T: Complete the polar bear's message with text info.
Ask Ss to scan text for details (Arctic, use ice to hunt, global warming is bad, lost homes, stay on land longer, not enough food) to fill the message. Then check.
Work on Activity B3
T: Choose sentences to complete the cause - and - effect chain.
Ask Ss to identify cause - effect steps: use fuel → climate warmer → ice melts earlier → sea level rises → polar bears lose homes... → life difficult. Select correct sentences. Then check and discuss the chain.
Step 3 Word work
Work on Activity B4
T: Complete the sentences with text words, using first letters.
Ask Ss to fill blanks with “energy”, “melt”, “frozen”, “homeless”, “save”. Then check, explaining word meanings (including suffix “-less” for “homeless”).
Work on Activity B5
T: Complete the Arctic passage with B4 words.
Ask Ss to fill with “frozen”, “energy”, “save”, “melting”, “homeless”. Then check, discussing each word's use in context.
Work on Activity B6
T: Complete the seals passage with box words.
Ask Ss to fill with “hunt for”, “in one’s hands”, “come up”, “as a result”, “let them down”. Then check, explaining each phrase's meaning.
Step 4 Critical thinking
Work on Critical thinking tasks
Review: T: Put the pictures in correct order according to the blog post.
Understand: T: Read details about global warming's effect on polar bears. Fill them in the table (Number, Expert opinion).
Apply: T: Choose one sentence and add it to the blog post to give a strong reason to protect polar bears.
Divide Ss into groups to discuss. Then invite groups to share.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' comprehension via answers in B1, B2, B3.
Observe word work accuracy in B4, B5, B6.
Evaluate critical thinking and oral expression in group discussions.
This lesson improves reading, vocabulary, and critical thinking about global warming and polar bears.
V. Design Purpose
Lead - in activates curiosity about global warming's effect on animals.
Reading tasks practice main idea, detail extraction, and cause - effect understanding. Word work reinforces vocabulary (including suffix “-less”).
Critical thinking tasks encourage analysis, understanding of details, and application to strengthen text, enhancing communication and deeper understanding.
VI. Blackboard Design
“Polar bears in a warming world” Reading and critical thinking
Cause - effect chain: Use fuel → Climate warmer → Ice melts earlier → Sea level rises → Polar bears lose homes → Life difficult
Key words: polar bears, Arctic, ice, melt, homeless, energy, frozen, save, hunt for, as a result, let... down
Critical thinking: Picture order, supporting details (Number, Expert opinion), applying sentences to blog post.
VII. Homework
Review polar bears and global warming vocabulary.
Write a short paragraph about what we can do to help save polar bears from the impact of global warming.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
Reading tasks engaged Ss, and word work was effective. Critical thinking discussions showed good engagement, but some Ss needed help analyzing “supporting details” types. More examples and guidance on identifying detail types can be provided in future lessons.
