Polar bears in a warming world
We use fuel for energy, but it is making the climate warmer. As a result, the ice melts, and the sea level rises. It is bad news for polar bears!
Polar bears live in the cold Arctic. The frozen Arctic is their home and the ice is their hunting ground. A polar bear usually stands on the sea ice to hunt for seals when they come up for air. But the ice has started to melt earlier each year. As the ice melts, some polar bears have lost their homes. Homeless polar bears have to move from ice to land earlier and stay on land longer. They become very hungry because they can’t find enough food.

A cause is why something happens, and an effect is
what happens. We can look for words such as because,
as, as a result, and so to understand the cause and effect relationship.
Subskill
Understanding cause and effect.
Understanding cause and effect is an important part of problem-solving. It involves recognizing the relationship between two events or conditions and determining how one affects the other.
To understand cause and effect, you need to observe and analyze the situation carefully, consider all possible factors, and make logical deductions. This process can help you identify solutions to problems and make informed decisions.

Here are more details about the effects of global warming on polar bears. Read the sentences and fill them in the table below.
Understand
Read the sentences and fill them in the table below.
They need to swim much longer, sometimes up to 30 miles, to find seals.
One bear lost close to 20 kilogrammes in just ten days.
By 2050, two thirds of polar bears will disappear.
A study shows that polar bears are losing their homes faster.
“The effect on the bears is greater than we thought,” a polar bear scientist says.
Global warming has a profound and specific impact on polar bears. Here are some relevant data and facts to more comprehensively understand this impact.
Apply
Choose one sentence and add it to the blog article.
It can give readers one more strong reason to protect polar bears.
1. Sea Ice Decline Rate: Since 1979, the extent of sea ice in the Arctic has decreased by an average of about 13.1% per decade, with an even more significant reduction in sea ice volume.

It can give readers one more strong reason to protect polar bears.
2. Difficulty in Obtaining Food: Polar bears rely on sea ice to catch seals, their primary food source. As sea ice decreases, polar bears need to swim longer distances to find food, sometimes over hundreds of kilometers.

It can give readers one more strong reason to protect polar bears.
3. Increased Energy Consumption: In ice-free waters, the movement speed of polar bears is about 40% slower than on ice, causing them to consume more energy to look for food.

It can give readers one more strong reason to protect polar bears.
4. Decreased Survival Rates: Studies have shown that if the ice-free period in summer exceeds 180 days, the survival rate of polar bears will greatly decrease.

5. Reproductive Issues: The disappearance of sea ice also affects the reproductive cycle of polar bears. Pregnant female bears need sufficient sea ice to find and capture food to support their survival and that of their cubs.

6. Population Decline: According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the number of polar bears has significantly declined over the past few decades. The population of polar bears in some areas has already decreased by about 30%.
