III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Study the model leaflet (Step 1)
Analyze “How to spend a day in Guangzhou”
T: Study the leaflet of a one - day tour of a student’s hometown (“How to spend a day in Guangzhou”). Look at the information it includes (time schedule, activities, transport) and how it’s organised (time order with pictures).
Ask Ss to read the model leaflet, identify the tour parts (morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening activities, transport), and discuss what makes it a good leaflet. Then share as a class.
Step 2 List hometown tourist attractions (Step 2)
Group work: Listing attractions
T: Work in groups. Make a list of tourist attractions in your hometown, covering natural treasures, landmarks, outdoor activities, cultural events.
Ask each group to brainstorm and list attractions in their hometown, categorizing them. Invite some groups to share their lists.
Step 3 Plan tour activities and transport (Step 3)
Group work: Planning
T: Work in groups. Discuss what the one - day tour can bring to travellers (e.g., fun, cultural learning) and decide on activities. Think about transport for each activity. Fill in the table (Natural treasures, Landmarks, etc., with Activity and Transport).
Ask groups to discuss and plan the tour, filling the table. Walk around to provide help and encourage creativity.
Step 4 Introduce an activity (Step 4)
Individual work: Introducing
T: Work individually. Choose one activity from your group’s plan and make a simple introduction (what to do, why interesting).
Ask Ss to write short introductions for their chosen activity. Then invite some Ss to share.
Step 5 Write hometown introduction and suggestions (Step 5)
Individual work: Writing intro and suggestions
T: Write a short introduction to your hometown at the beginning (e.g., “[Hometown] is a great place to visit with beautiful scenery and rich culture.”) and some travelling suggestions at the end (e.g., “Bring a hat for the sun, and don’t miss the local snacks.”).
Guide Ss to write the introduction and suggestions. Check some examples as a class.
Step 6 Create the leaflet (Step 6)
Group work: Creating leaflet
T: Create your leaflet. Use the group’s plan, individual introductions, hometown intro, and suggestions. Organize it with time, activities, transport, pictures (if possible), and make it attractive.
Provide paper and art supplies. Ask groups to create their leaflets, combining all parts. Walk around to assist.
Step 7 Present the leaflet (Step 7)
Group presentation: Presenting
T: Present your leaflet in class. Explain the tour schedule, activities, and why travellers would enjoy it.
Each group presents their leaflet, using clear language to describe the tour. Classmates can ask questions.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess groups' collaboration in listing attractions and planning activities/transport (Steps 2 - 3).
Observe individual work in introducing activities and writing intro/suggestions (Steps 4 - 5).
Evaluate groups' leaflet creation (attractiveness, information completeness) and presentation skills (clarity, confidence) (Steps 6 - 7).
This project helps Ss learn to create a hometown tour leaflet, improving collaborative, creative, and communicative skills in English.
V. Design Purpose
Studying the model leaflet provides a reference for Ss to understand leaflet structure and content, guiding their creation.
Listing attractions, planning activities/transport, and writing introductions/suggestions train Ss' research, planning, and writing skills.
Creating and presenting the leaflet offer practical experience, allowing Ss to apply English in promoting their hometown, enhancing communication and creativity.
VI. Blackboard Design
“Why do we travel? (Make a leaflet about a one - day tour of your hometown)” Project
Steps: Study model → List attractions → Plan activities/transport → Introduce activity → Write intro/suggestions → Create leaflet → Present leaflet
Leaflet content: Hometown introduction, time - ordered activities (morning, lunch, afternoon, evening), transport, travelling suggestions
Key phrases: tourist attractions, natural treasures, landmarks, outdoor activities, cultural events, travelling tips
VII. Homework
Reflect on the leaflet project and write a short passage about what you learned from creating and presenting the hometown tour leaflet.
Share your group’s leaflet with family and friends, asking for their feedback on the tour plan.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
The project effectively engaged Ss in creating a hometown tour leaflet. Groups showed good collaboration in planning, and leaflets were creative. However, some Ss struggled with presenting clearly or writing detailed activity introductions. In future projects, more guidance on presentation skills and descriptive writing can be provided.
