Learning activities:
Step 1 Lead - in
Show pictures of extreme sports (skydiving, rock climbing) and regular sports (baseball, ice skating).
T: Which pictures show extreme sports, and why do you think so? Invite Ss to share their answers. Then say: Today, we will learn about extreme sports and a mountain bike race.
Step 2 Listening
Work on Activity D1
T: Extreme sports are becoming more and more popular. Answer the question: Which pictures show extreme sports, and why?
Ask Ss to discuss and answer based on their knowledge. Then check as a class.
Work on Activity D2
T: Listen and choose the best answers about the podcast on extreme sports.
Play the audio. Ask Ss to listen and choose the correct answers. Then check the answers.
Work on Activity D3
T: Listen again and complete the notes (Dos and Don’ts for extreme sports).
Play the audio again. Ask Ss to fill in the blanks in the Dos and Don’ts notes. Then check the answers.
Work on Activity D6
T: Listen and write T (true) or F (false) about Richard Parks and the mountain bike race.
Play the audio. Ask Ss to listen and mark true or false. Then check the answers.
Work on Activity D7
T: Listen again and number the days of the mountain bike race.
Play the audio again. Ask Ss to number the days according to the race events. Then check the answers.

T: Look at these dangers (getting injured, being too hot/cold, being in an accident, running out of breath). In groups, think of a sport for each one and explain why it is dangerous.
Divide Ss into groups and ask them to discuss. Then invite some groups to share.

T: Richard Parks is ready for the most difficult bike race in the world. Answer the question: What difficulties do you think the racers will have?
Ask Ss to answer individually or in pairs. Then invite some Ss to share.
