I'm happy to become a member of the Sports Club, and I'm sure we will have a great time together.
3. Key and challenging points
Describe a favourite sport, including when started, how often played, where played, and benefits, based on a model.
Use conjunctions correctly to connect sentences and make the passage coherent.
Write a self - introduction with clear structure (beginning, favourite sport details, benefits, ending) and correct tense usage.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Study a model (Step 1)
Analyze the model passage
T: Study a model. Complete the questions about the information in each paragraph. Look at Linda's self - introduction about volleyball. Answer the questions for each paragraph (e.g., What is my favourite sport? When...? How often...? Where...? What...?).
Ask Ss to read Linda's model passage, identify the information in each paragraph, and answer the corresponding questions. Then check the answers.
Step 2 Brainstorm (Step 2)
Think and answer questions
T: Think. Ask yourself the same questions and write down your answers. You may ask more questions (e.g., What is my favourite sport? When did I start? How often do I play? Where do I play? What benefits does the sport bring me?).
Ask Ss to think about their own favourite sport and answer the questions, preparing content for their self - introduction. Invite some Ss to share their answers.
Step 3 Write (Step 3)
Write the self - introduction
T: Write. Put your answers together. Try to use and, but, or, and so to connect sentences. Follow the structure: Beginning (greeting and name), Favourite sport details (what sport, when started, how often, where), Benefits, Ending (willingness to join the club).
Guide Ss to write their self - introductions, paying attention to tense usage (simple past for when started, simple present for current habits and benefits) and using conjunctions to connect sentences.
Step 4 Check (Step 4)
Self - check
T: Read your own writing and answer the questions:
Did you indent the first line of each paragraph?
Did you use conjunctions to connect the sentences?
Did you mention at least two to three benefits of the sport?
Ask Ss to check their own writing based on these questions.
Step 5 Peer review (Step 5)
Exchange and review
T: Exchange your writing with another student. Answer the questions:
Does the writer use conjunctions to connect the sentences?
Does the writer describe the details of his or her favourite sport?
Does the writer mention the benefits of the sport? Do you agree?
Ask Ss to review their partner's writing and give feedback.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' ability to analyze the model and extract information by checking their answers in Step 1.
Observe whether Ss can brainstorm and answer questions about their favourite sport in Step 2.
Evaluate Ss' writing skills by observing their self - introduction in Step 3, checking structure, tense usage, and conjunction use.
Assess Ss' self - checking and peer review abilities by observing their answers to the check questions.
This lesson helps Ss learn to write a self - introduction about a favourite sport, improving writing organization, tense accuracy, and coherence with conjunctions.
V. Design Purpose
Studying the model helps Ss understand the structure and content of a self - introduction about a favourite sport. Completing questions for each paragraph trains them to observe and extract information.
Brainstorming encourages Ss to think about their own favourite sport and prepare content for writing, practicing self - reflection.
Writing, self - checking, and peer review provide a complete writing process, helping Ss improve through practice and feedback.
VI. Blackboard Design
Unit E Writing “My favourite sport”
Structure:
Beginning: Greeting and name (Hello, everyone. I'm...)
Favourite sport details: What sport, when started, how often, where (I like..., but I love... best. I started... when... We play... in... We have training...)
Benefits: Teaches team work, makes strong, gives energy/mood (teaches..., makes..., gives...)
Ending: Willingness to join (I'm happy to become a member...)
Conjunctions: and, but, or, so
Tenses: Simple past (when started), Simple present (current habits, benefits)
VII. Homework
Polish the self - introduction written in class based on self - check and peer review.
Share your polished self - introduction with your classmates who are also interested in the sports club.
VIII. Teaching Reflection
The step - by - step writing process effectively helped Ss organize their ideas and write about their favourite sport. Ss showed good understanding of using conjunctions. However, some Ss might need more practice in using tenses correctly and developing detailed descriptions of the sport. In future lessons, more targeted practice on these aspects can be provided.
