Unit 2 C Grammaring教学设计
I. Teaching Objectives
Master the simple past tense to talk about finished actions or events in the past, and actions or events that happened regularly in the past.
Be able to form negative sentences and questions in the simple past tense correctly.
Improve the ability to use the simple past tense in writing and speaking, enhancing grammatical accuracy and communicative competence.
II. Language Knowledge
1. Key structures
Simple past tense form: Add - ed or - d to regular verbs; use irregular verb forms (e.g., feel → felt, go → went, have → had, take → took).
Negative sentences: Use “did not (didn’t) + base form of the verb” for regular and irregular verbs (except be). For “be”, use “wasn’t/weren’t”.
Questions: Use “Did + subject + base form of the verb” for regular and irregular verbs (except be). For “be”, use “Was/Were + subject”.
2. Key sentences
At first, Chen Zihao always felt lonely at the new school.
One day he was surprised when Mrs Qin read a story about Sanmao.
That night he decided to share the book with his classmates.
The next day Chen Zihao showed his books to the class.
He didn’t have a good time with his friends last summer.
I wasn’t on holiday last week.
Did he have a good time with his friends last summer?
Were you on holiday last week?
3. Key and challenging points
Correctly form the simple past tense for regular and irregular verbs.
Use “did” and “be” (was/were) correctly in negative sentences and questions.
Apply the simple past tense accurately in different contexts.
III. Teaching Procedures
Learning activities:
Step 1 Lead - in
Show a picture of Chen Zihao from the story “An old book, a new friend”.
T: Do you remember Chen Zihao from the story? What did he do at his new school? Invite Ss to recall and answer using the simple past tense. Then say: Today, we will learn about the simple past tense.
Step 2 Study the simple past tense (Activity C1)
Analyze sentences
T: Study the blue parts and answer the questions: What time expressions are used in the sentences? What are the simple past forms of feel, read, decide, and show?
Explain the grammar highlights: Use simple past to talk about finished past actions/events or regular past actions; how to form simple past (regular verbs: add - ed/- d; irregular verbs: use special forms).
Identify verb forms
Ask Ss to find the simple past forms of the verbs in the sentences and summarize regular and irregular verbs.
Step 3 Rewrite sentences (Activity C2)
Practice with time expressions
T: Rewrite the sentences with the past time expressions in brackets.
Ask Ss to rewrite the sentences, changing verbs to simple past tense. Then check the answers.
Step 4 Negative sentences and questions (Activity C3 & Grammar highlights)
Study negative and question forms
T: Study the blue parts and answer the question: How do we make negative sentences and questions in simple past tense?
Explain the grammar highlights: Use “didn’t + base form” for most verbs; “wasn’t/weren’t” for “be”; use “Did + subject + base form” for questions about most verbs; “Was/Were + subject” for “be”.
Practice (Activity C4)
T: Complete the story with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets.
Ask Ss to finish the task independently and then check the answers.
Step 5 Role - play (Activity C5)
Oral practice
T: Work in pairs and role - play the situation: Your parent is asking what you did at school.
Divide Ss into pairs and ask them to practice the role - play using the simple past tense. Then invite some pairs to act out their dialogues.
IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness
Assess Ss' understanding of simple past tense formation by observing their answers in Activities C1 and C2.
Observe whether Ss can form negative sentences and questions correctly in Activities C3 and C4.
Evaluate Ss' oral communication skills by observing their role - play in Activity C5, checking the use of simple past tense.
This lesson helps Ss master the simple past tense, improving grammatical accuracy and ability to talk about past actions/events.
V. Design Purpose
The lead - in connects to the previous story, activating Ss' prior knowledge and introducing the lesson topic.
Studying sentences and grammar highlights explains the simple past tense rules. Rewriting sentences and completing the story provide written practice.
Role - play offers oral practice, allowing Ss to apply the simple past tense in a real - life context, enhancing communicative competence.

VIII. Teaching Reflection
The activities effectively helped Ss learn the simple past tense. Ss showed good understanding in written tasks. However, some Ss might still confuse regular and irregular verb forms or make mistakes in negative and question forms. In future lessons, more targeted practice on these aspects can be provided.
