8A Unit 3 To be a good learner Welcome to the unit (教学设计)
I. Teaching Objectives
1. Knowledge Objectives
· Students can accurately understand and explain the three Chinese - related English sayings about learning.
· Students master key phrases (e.g., “a journey of a thousand miles”, “row a boat”) and sentence structures (e.g., “...is like...; if... , you will...”).
2. Ability Objectives
· Improve students’ reading comprehension skills, especially in matching sayings with their meanings.
· Enhance students’ oral English proficiency through discussing successful learning factors.
3. Emotional Objectives
· Cultivate students’ positive learning attitudes by understanding the connotations of the sayings.
· Stimulate students’ enthusiasm for exploring effective learning methods.
II. Teaching Key & Difficult Points
1. Key Points
· Correctly match the three sayings with their corresponding meanings.
· Skillfully use target language to discuss elements for successful learning.
2. Difficult Points
· Deeply grasp the philosophical connotations of the sayings and apply them in real - life learning discussions.
III. Teaching Procedures(45 minutes)
1. Lead - in(5 minutes)
· Activity: Show a series of pictures depicting different learning scenarios (e.g., a student reading under a tree, a group studying together). Ask students: “What do these pictures tell us about learning? Do you have your own learning stories?”.
· Purpose: Arouse students’ interest in the topic of “learning” and activate their prior knowledge.
2. Presentation(10 minutes)
· Step 1: Introduce Sayings
· Present the three pictures and sayings from the textbook on the PPT. Teach new words: “saying (谚语)”, “journey (旅程)”, “row (划船)”, “depend on (依靠)” through simple definitions, example sentences, and gestures. For example, mime rowing a boat to explain “row”.
· Step 2: Explain Structures
· Briefly analyze the structure and core meaning of each saying. For “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”, explain it conveys the importance of teaching learning skills.
3. Practice(12 minutes)
· Activity 1: Matching Task
· Have students individually match the sayings with their meanings (a, b, c) in the textbook. Then, ask them to check answers in pairs. Walk around the classroom to provide timely help.
· Invite 2 - 3 pairs to share their answers and explain their reasoning, like “Why does the first saying match meaning b?”, to ensure understanding.
· Activity 2: Saying Retelling
· Ask students to retell the sayings in their own words. This helps deepen their comprehension of the learning wisdom behind the sayings.
4. Production(13 minutes)
· Group Discussion: “What is the most important thing for successful learning?”
· Provide the model conversation in the textbook as a reference. Students discuss in groups of 4. Encourage them to use sentences such as “In my opinion, ... is crucial for successful learning because...”.
· Select 3 - 4 groups to present their discussions. Give feedback, focusing on language accuracy and the depth of ideas, e.g., “Your group has a unique perspective. And you can improve the sentence ‘...’ like this...”.
5. Summary & Homework(5 minutes)
· Summary:
· Quickly review the three sayings, their meanings, and key vocabulary.
· Highlight the importance of the learning attitudes and methods reflected in the sayings.
